  1. Jason says:

Finally, Mattea is done. I’ll predict right now that she doesn’t get out of her first game, and doesn’t earn a wild card spot in the TOC.

Considering it’s one of the busiest airports in the US, and the volume of Canadians that stop there on the way to snowbirding in Florida, I think that the FJ wasn’t so arcane. I got it from the Coca Cola reference, anyways.

Danielle appears to have more charisma than Mattea ever did. Although there was no way she could have known it (as she wouldn’t have seen any of the champion’s prior games) Danielle’s wager was quite erudite. I, again, predicted the champion’s wager, as she was that predictable (and, ergo, boring).

Tomorrow, my local station will show a rerun of a game from last year (they’re on Jonathan Fisher’s games right now), and Mayim is much smoother. The stilted, halting, choppy delivery does not have me very hopeful for Monday. Maybe some excitement will return.

I have been reading Jason’s comments about Mattea and I completely agree. I stopped watching because of her smugness. But since I’m a fan, I did get all the clues from J archive.
i dont know why producers think runaways and streakers are exciting. it’s time to bring back the old 5-day champion rule back.

    • Jason says:

So, Johnny announced an “Overheard” segment for Danielle and her betting strategy, but, today, there isn’t one there. However, under more general J Buzz, there’s a link (for Danielle, not Overheard). Don’t know if that’s an error, or what!

      • Kevin Cheng says:

Yeah I don’t what happened Johnny Gilbert announced that there is a Jeopardy overheard video about Danielle’s winning wagering strategy but they did not post it.

  2. VJ says:

Mattea’s chat story about her unique name piqued my curiosity. It says online that she was born in 1998 so I looked up her name in the Social Security database for that year and several other years.

In the USA, 1975 was the first year that the name Mattea showed up in the database with 7 girls. It doesn’t mean no one was ever named Mattea before. It means that was the first time 5 or more births were reported with that name .

The popularity of the name appears to have peaked around the time Mattea was born:

    2000 – 65
    1999 – 78
    1998 – 65

Usually a name jumps up like that because of a real or fictional person getting a lot of attention. I don’t know who that might have been in the late 90s.

More recently, a young actress from New Jersey named Mattea Conforti (born in 2006) played young Janice Soprano in “The Many Saints of Newark” .

  3. Howard says:

Lawrence said it just right regarding the wagering. At first I recoiled when I saw she’d bet only $4200, then later realized she was trying to freeze out Betsy simultaneously.

Mea culpa for not knowing FJ. Have changed planes there and of course Coke’s been HQ’d in ‘lanta forever.

At least I got them on Ross the brooding hero; the “I Tiberius” novel; and the Latin for “Where are you going.” Still chuckling over Mattea’s answer of Satchel Paige for the 7 no-hitters. I attended Ryan’s 5th no-no in Anaheim in Sept 1974.

Pure speculation, but J! tapes 5 shows in a day, and even though Mattea had won 4 prior Friday games, it’s possible that she just ran out of gas tonight. But she did have a decent lead going into FJ, so it’s unlikely to be more than simply not knowing the airport name.

  4. DevilisinGeorgia says:

Mattea not hunting for daily doubles ever infuriated me. Eventually had to catch up to her + someone being from actual Georgia with a layup final.

  5. jk says:

Fun game, and masterful wagering by Danielle. People (ridiculously, in my opinion) raised eyebrows in this forum when Final Jeopardy the other day feature O, Canada as an answer, because Mattea is from Canada, as if there were something less than random, or even nefarious, about it. Where are the conspiracy theorists when Danielle, from GA, gets an Atlanta question? :} *** I’m being facetious***

    • VJ says:

@jk, I really think you misunderstood the comments on Spoiler Talk on the May 3 “O Canada” game. No one thought it was unfair to the other contestants as evidenced by the predictions. No one predicted only one person would get that clue. There were three 3/3 predictions and two 2/3 (the correct result). I was talking about how it looks to some people and, obviously, the show is aware of it because every time a coincidence like this happens, how the games are scheduled in advance is brought up.

  6. Chase2022 says:

Funny how yesterday she almost lost and today she does. One might think she had had enough. Seemed like she was letting them answer more questions.

  7. Lawrence says:

Interesting next-level FJ wager by Danielle, as you’d expect Mattea to bet the $3601 to cover (which she did), and it also covers a Betsy all-in in the case of a double get between them. Though I think $7801 (or even a shove) would have been more optimal. She needs to get it right to win in any case, so might as well maximize the take and there’s a non-zero chance Mattea doesn’t like the category (or mis-calculates) and bets low.

Still, at least she put some thought into it, which is more than a lot of contestants do.

  8. Lou says:

A big congrats to Danielle Maurer for being our new champion and the giant killer to get this final. I’ve also travelled to georgia in 2016 so this was a no brainer after reading the clue. I thought at first Mattea would have another trick up her sleeve but still though Mattea will be coming back for the tournament of champions. There is an airport that combines the name Hartsfield-Jackson together. Mattea had a great run so far for the month of april through May. So now with her big win, this toc will be fierce

  9. Jacob Ska says:

I had an inkling it might be the end for Mattea when I read today’s fj clue. I wasn’t certain though. If she had pulled this one off it would have been miraculous. Presidents are a little easier because there have been so few in number (40+). Governors get more complicated because of the upward trend in the number count. Mayors are literally impossible, unless they are from the contestants’ backyard or are high profile, because the numbers are in the thousands.

I could come up with only one mayor’s name in the fj clue and that was Jackson. He was more recent and was in the news a lot when he served as mayor so I knew his name.

Mattea had a good run and proved to be a formidable opponent. It will be great to see her in the next Tournament. Meanwhile, a big congratulations to Danielle Maurer.

  10. Candy says:

Danielle is from Georgia so it was a great clue for her!

    • Kathy Cappo says:

Looking forward to seeing Mattea in the Tournament of Champions. Too bad you are bringing Bialik back, she makes me lose interest in watching. You need to have Ken full time.

      • jk says:

Kathy Cappo, I agree. Mayim is better than she was when she started, but, for me, she just doesn’t fit the show, and her cadence often seems to be off-putting to the contestants. I agree with Mattea, who also said she prefers Ken, because of his long history with the show

  11. Kevin Cheng says:

After a couple of challengers came so close to defeating Mattea, Danielle was able to do it by being the only player to get FJ! correct and win the game. Congrats to Danielle for becoming the new champ! Mattea had a great run in exactly a month and we will see her again in the Tournament of Champions. In the meantime, we will see Danielle again when Mayim Bialik returns hosting on Monday.
