WHAT IS (THE GAME OF) LIFE?

The original name of the board game created by Milton Bradley in 1860 was “The Checkered Game of Life.” The updated 1960 version called “The Game of Life’ was created to celebrate the game’s 100th anniversary. The game is commonly called “Life”, so any of these responses would be acceptable. The American Institute of Learning and Human Development has a history of the game’s evolution. Also, here is an excerpt from an 1864 review of the original game from Scientific American: “This game represents, as indicated by the name, the checkered journey of life, and is intended to present to the minds of the young, the various vices and virtues with which they will come in contact in their journey through life, and to illustrate the effects of each in a manner that will make a lasting impression on their minds, the whole being embodied in an attractive and entertaining amusement well calculated to interest youth and adults.”

A “National Inventors Hall of Fame” Daily Double featured the Checkered Game of Life on 2/9/2018

Scott bet $6,199, bringing him up to $12,399.

Monica bet $6,595. She finished in second place with $13,195.

James bet $58,000, winning this one with $130,022. It’s not a new one-day record but it’s a new No. 2 for single game winnings in the Jeopardy! Hall of Fame. James’ 28-day total of $2,195,557 is a new No. 2 in the second column over there, too.

I can’t believe I’ve only found one other guy on the internet that heard James wager 22,000 on the May 27 show but he didn’t correct Alex when he repeated back “20,000 even”. I watched it a dozen times and James clearly says “22,000”. If it would have stood, James probably would have broken his own single game record.

    • VJ says:

@Steve, I thought he said $22,000 myself at first. In fact that is what I typed but then Alex said “$20,000 even.” I listened to it again with earphones on (I have lousy speakers) and I heard $20,000 clearly the second time.

    Wake me when it’s over . . . .

  3. Albert says:

Did anybody else hear the rumor that James lost this week? I wonder which day James loses?

    • VJ says:

I haven’t been paying much attention to rumors but for James not to beat Ken’s money, he’ll have to lose this week. It’s kind of a running joke around here that if I say something will happen (like I said I think he’ll beat Ken’s money), it won’t happen. So I guess we’ll see.

We were looking at the contestants this morning and picking who we think will beat James. I picked Jim-Bob (tomorrow) and my daughter picked Faizan (Wed)

I love watching James! I’ll be sad when the Giant Killer comes and (s)he will. Someone keeps him on his toes in the Jeopardy! round, then James gets the DD and flubs it. so he’s behind, having gone “all in”. Then he’s a little unlucky with his categories in Double Jeopardy! Final Jeopardy! stumps everyone but James has had to make a big bet to stay above the second place person who doesn’t bet anything…..
I’ll be sad when it happens!

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

SO CLOSE to breaking his own one-day record, but it’s alright. @Patrick, I may agree with you BUT it will be when he reached past 74 games. I mean, it’s time for someone else to take the crown.

  6. Patrick Mallon says:

William Weyser, if this occurs, that will be a happy day.

    • VJ says:

Actually, Lou, I played the Game of My Life with my siblings when I was younger but my favorite board game was really Careers by Parker Brothers.
