Final Jeopardy: Art History (5-26-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (5/26/2016) in the category “Art History” was:

Escalier is in the original title of a work by this artist that scandalized NYC’s Intl. Exhibition of Modern Art in 1913.

8x champ Buzzy Cohen has now won $147,803. He plays his 9th game today against these two players: Dan Rothfarb, from Annandale, VA; and Riley Molin, originally from Bloomington, IN.

After the introductions, Alex Trebek said: “Well, as you just saw, our champion, Buzzy, is feeling his oats, but he’s running out of body parts. He told his friends when he started winning on the program, that he would, you know, touch something different each day. Well, you saw today, the last thing he touched is his eyebrow. He’s only got one eyebrow to go, then who knows? Oh gosh, where will he go?” LOL!

Round 1 Categories: Romantics – TV’s Greatest Hits – Words of Encouragement – Mountain / Man – Hazardous – “P” In Fashion

Buzzy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “”P” in Fashion” under the $600 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. He was the only one with any money — $600. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

Buzzy finished in the lead with $6,000. Dan was second with $4,000 and Riley was in the hole to the tune of $1,000.

Round 2 Categories: Rome Antics – Prologues – “Young” Men & Women – Beastly Expressions – My First Car – What Is It?

Dan found the first Daily Double in “Rome Antics” under the $2,000 clue. There were 2 categories and one clue to go after it. In second place with $8,800, he had $4,800 less than Buzzy’s lead. He bet $5,000 but could only come up with “fountain” so he was WRONG.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS MARCEL DUCHAMP?

“Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 2) sparked a storm of controversy at the International Exhibition of Modern Art held at the National Guard 69th Regiment Armory in New York in 1913. The painting was perceived by the majority of art critics to be utterly unintelligible, and it soon became the butt of jokes, jingles, and caricatures. The American Art News offered a ten dollar reward to the first reader who could “find the lady”1 within the jumble of interlocking planes and jagged lines, and newspaper cartoonists had a field day with the painting, lampooning it…. When Duchamp learned of the scandal, he was delighted, and the widespread notoriety that the painting brought him encouraged the French artist to move to New York two years later.” Excerpt from Twentieth Century Painting and Sculpture in the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the Museum’s website

Riley wrote down “M.C. Escher.” That cost her $2,199 and she was left with a dollar.

Dan wrote down “Gustave Klimt.” He lost his $2,400 bet, finishing with $5,200.

Buzzy was back to his runaway antics, betting nothing and writing down a message for his host: “Who is once more Trebek … once more?” He won the match with his pre-FJ $16,800. That’s a 9-day total of $164,603. Buzzy’s feeling his oats even more now and we will get to see him touch his other eyebrow tomorrow.

A clue about the work of art referenced in FJ! is used in the 1986 Pressman J! home game. 43/61 here.

After all his years of error, Alex still can’t get the accent right on Bolivar. it’s Bo-LEE-var!

I was surprised none of the contestants recognized Loretta Young’s photo. There have been younger contestants before who knew the old stars probably from watching AMC, etc.

Buzzy’s all over the media and he’s supposed to be on Good Morning America tomorrow. Incredibly, in this Vanity Fair article, he says “I’m a big fan of the Rocky franchise.” OMG!!

He also says Trebek is cool with his jokes. So…. Trebek has been playing straight man to Buzzy. LOL!!

        Hollywood will be calling next.

Btw, wonder why the producers didn’t edit Riley crying at the end of the show standing next to Trebek. Never seen that from an adult contestant before.

        • Cece says:

Buzzy does have kind of an “old Hollywood” look to him, huh? I also wondered about Riley’s crying; poor girl, she was probably frustrated.

Dan’s blanking on “Trevi” was awful. That would have been a good time for him to let out a SOB. I didn’t notice if he did on the 2K Prologue clue, though. 🙂

The TS that surprised me the most was ‘serenade’— whaat? I got ‘Pareo’ because the word is very common in Brazil. And we only know one way to tie it: showing as much skin as possible, lol.

Dan’s response Klimt was not a bad guess (albeit Klimt being Austrian and the clue having a French word as hint).

        • Cece says:

P.S. Just to clarify, I meant Klimt fit 1913 and painted the female body (“scandalized” in the clue?).

  4. Gramma says:

    Buzzy funny and so smart!!

    • VJ says:

and you can see he is having a lot of fun up there!

I could swear that Dan let out a son of a b- after he missed that $2K Prologue clue with his “a diamond as big as the Ritz” response. (That’s F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dan). I was also surprised no one knew who played Paulie in “Rocky”

10 clues from the match are online over here now

Wow! Go Buzzy go. Slow & steady wins the race.
