After learning of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt dictated a short speech to his secretary, Grace Tully. After she typed up her notes, FDR edited the first draft by hand: “On draft No. 1, Roosevelt changed ‘a date which will live in world history’ to ‘a date which will live in infamy,’ providing the speech its most famous phrase and giving birth to the term, ‘day of infamy,’ which December 7, 1941, is often called.” Source: National Archives — they have images of FDR’s handwritten revisions to what became one of the most famous speeches of the 20th century.
