Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/25/2018) in the category “Oscar-Nominated Actors” was:
He was nominated twice for playing Oscar winners–a real one in a 1992 biopic & a fictional one in a 2008 combat comedy

Virginia found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Geniuses are Born” under the $800 clue, with 11 clues remaining after it. She was in third place with $2,000, $2,200 less than Ross’s lead. She went for a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.
He was born April 15, 1452, near a little Tuscan town you wouldn’t have heard of otherwise. show
Ross finished in the lead with $7,600. Virginia was second with $6,400 and Josh was last with $4,200.
Round 2 Categories: Epic Fail – New York Colleges & Universities – 4-Syllable Words – Sleep – Early 19th Century Timeline – A “Little” Entertainment
Virginia found the first Daily Double in “NY Colleges & Univs” under the $1,200 clue on the 7th pick. She was in second place with $7,600 now, $1,200 less than Ross’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.
In 1917 it awarded the first Pulitzer Prizes. show
Virginia found the last Daily Double in “4-Syllable Words” under the $1,200 clue, with a dozen clues to go after it. In the lead with $14,000, she had $2,800 more than Ross in second place. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.
The range or territory of a sheriff’s authority. show
Virginia finished in the lead with $17,800. Ross was next with $17,600 and Josh was in third place with $9,400.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
At the 1993 Academy Awards, Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in “Chaplin” (1992) as, uh, Chaplin. (Al Pacino won for “Scent of a Woman.”) At the 2009 Academy Awards, Downey was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in “Tropic Thunder” (2008) as the fictional 5-time Oscar-winning actor Kirk Lazarus. (Heath Ledger won posthumously for “The Dark Knight.”)

Josh wrote down “Hopkins.” He lost his $8,401 bet, leaving him with $999.
Ross got it right. He bet $1,201 bet, bringing him up to $18,801.
Virginia got it right, too. She bet $17,401 so she won the match with a great payday: $35,201. “That’s an impressive total for 2 days, not just one,” Alex said.
Reversal: “ZZ” MIDDLE ($800) It means gray, usually when referring to hair – Virginia got dinged for “grizzly” and Ross got it with “grizzled.” The judges decided to accept Virginia’s response because Alex didn’t say the “ZZ”s had to be “exactly” in the middle.
A triple stumper from each round:
EPIC FAIL ($800) This epic hero triumphantly slays a dragon, but when he deceptively woos & wins Brunhilda, it leads to his death
4-SYLLABLE WORDS ($1600) It’s the buzzword for providing TMI on social media

This seemed like a loss that was done purposely by Josh. I can’t remember who else did this in the last couple of years, was it Buzzy (that was his name?)?
Nope, it wasn’t Buzzy. You can check that on the 2-years ago link — it was Buzzy’s 10th game and the one he lost.
Aside from looking tired, Josh just didn’t get any DDs today to help him catch up.
Josh didn’t dump the game. He was an excellent player with some weaknesses, as are many players on the show. For example, Josh bet $5 on an Art DD and answered picasso instead of dali, an answer most people who make it on the show would have easily gotten correct.
Josh just happened to meet two other excellent players and encountered some questions at which he is not strong.
I was surprised that the Trojan War popped up again right after we had the FJ clue about it just the other week.
You and me both, Rhonda
With 1st place having $17,800 & 2nd place having $17,600, there are only 2 people right now who are saying ”Hmm! These scores look very familiar”, and those 2 people are Matt Jackson & Michael Baker. On 10/14/15, Matt Jackson had the lead with $17,800, and Michael Baker had $17,600. Everybody got stumped on a very tough Final Jeopardy! clue about the Seattle Space Needle, and Michael wagered $2,399, enough to keep the 3rd place player, Sally Hatfield, locked out if she doubled up, which she would have if she got it right, and Matt went for the lockout. So, Michael Baker won with $15,201, became the new champion, and also became the giant killer, sending Matt Jackson home with $411,612 after 13 wins, plus $2,000, and Matt would be seen again in the 2015 Tournament Of Champions, where he met his match: Alex Jacob.
Though born in Boston, in hospital, I was taken home to the suburb of Randolph MA, the hometown of the physician geriatrician big winner on JEOPARDY! today. I am quite fond of the community, even though I only lived there with my parents from July 1959 to December 1960.
Josh had a great seven game run but he must have been exhausted after seven days on the show. At least now we know he can make a comeback in the tournament of champions. But still I am willing to see how Virginia does next week. Also VJ are you a fan of the avengers movies? And I wish you all a happy memorial day. I really hope Virginia’s streak continues with big wins.
@Lou, nope, I haven’t seen the Avengers films. Hope you and everyone has a Happy Memorial Day Weekend, too.
@John, thanks for the congrats. I just didn’t think it was as hard as the rest of you guys 🙂

@VJ, Congratulations for the only correct prediction and also to Virginia. A close call, only 200 separating her from Ross. That she got all 3 DDs and got them correct added a nice 7K to her score before FJ.
That’s the appeal of J, you have many factors : 12 categories, 3 DDs that may or not be in a field where you are strong and eventually FJ that could be in your ballpark or negates your entire otherwise stellar performance.
In any event, I wish everybody a nice, relaxing long weekend (though no break for you on Monday, VJ…) See you all on Monday!
See you in the future, Josh.
