WHO IS FRANZ LISZT?

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, teacher and conductor, sometimes called one of the first classical music superstars of the 19th century. (Nicolò Paganini is the other one.) Richard Wagner, one of Liszt’s pupils, was the composer of Lohengrin. Liszt’s daughter, Cosima, was first married to Hans von Bülow, another of her papa’s pupils, but she took up with Wagner. Bülow steadfastly refused to give Cosima a divorce until she and Wagner had their third child in 1867. Wagner and Cosima married in 1870 when her divorce became final and Franz Liszt became Wagner’s father-in-law.

Liszt outlived his son-in-law by 3 years. He died in Bayreuth, Germany, aged 74, in 1886 from pneumonia that he may have caught at the Bayreuth music festival hosted by his daughter Cosima.

Lynn thought it was Toscanini. She lost $5,000 and finished with $1,400.

Ed came up with Haydn. That cost him $2,401 and left him with $7,999.

Joyce picked Rachmaninoff. She lost $10,500, dropping her down to $300. That made Ed Petersen the new Jeopardy! champ.

  1. Ludwig v. B says:

Three responses to the 1850 premiere of an opera. A 20th century composer/pianist, a 20th century conductor and an 18th century composer. Three smart people who don’t have a clue about classical music. But I’ll bet they know the Kardashian’s.

  2. Howard says:

Strong comeback by Ed after entering DJ with $0.
Lynn’s two missed DDs were not impossible. I got the first one (Ghana’s former name) just in time. Probably because I collected stamps in the 60s. On the 2nd, she overlooked the category name, To the Fort.

FJ was a braincrusher, and the only listed stumper I knew was the soccer star, who invested in bringing an MLS team to Miami.

  3. Rick says:

A tough FJ as none of us came up with the correct response either.

  4. Collin says:

Tina Turner was laid to rest today at 83 years old after being ill for a long time. (1939-2023)

Today’s Jeopardy was a big DD and FJ failure for the second time this season.

  5. Ismael Gomez says:

Disappointed show as all 3 DDs were missed resulted our second skunking of the season and another tough final as we got a triple stumper.
