WHAT IS “NIGHTHAWKS”?

MyModernMet.com has Josephine “Jo” Hopper’s detailed notes on “Nighthawks”, Edward Hopper’s 1942 masterpiece: “Night + brilliant interior of cheap restaurant. Bright items: cherry wood counter + tops of surrounding stools; light on metal tanks at rear right; brilliant streak of jade green tiles 3/4 across canvas–at base of glass of window curving at corner. Light walls, dull yellow ocre [sic] door into kitchen right.” The notes go on to describe much more in the painting in great detail, including describing the man at the counter whose face you can see as a “Man night hawk (beak)” Click here to read more and see the Nighthawks painting plus close up detail of the “Man night hawk.”

Interestingly, while Buzzy said the woman in the figure is red-headed Jo herself, Mrs. Hopper described her as “Girl in red blouse, brown hair eating sandwich.”

Ryan got it right. He bet $107 and finished with $3,907.

Karen bet $1,119 and finished with $12,519.

Sam bet nothing and won the game with $28,600. Sam Kavanaugh is the first Jeopardy! ToC finalist. Tune in tomorrow to see semi-finalists Ryan Bilger, Veronica Vichit-Vadakan, and Kevin Walsh compete.

I never heard of the 1942 painting, but I’ll have to readily admit that it was an impressive work of art.

  2. Albert says:

Vj, you posted the incorrect picture. The pic you posted is Chop Suey, not Nighthawks.

    • Judy O'Toole says:

Thank you. I was really confused when I saw this.

    • VJ says:

That’s the cover of a book about more of his works than just Nighthawks, Albert. I wanted to put that there since the painting is on the article I linked to. Anyhow, I changed where the link to the article is to make it more clear that the painting is over there.

    • VJ says:

Nevermind about the book. I took it off and put up a video to show more of his works.

      Didn’t mean to confuse anyone.

      • JP says:

Thanks for posting the video. It was a pleasant surprise to hear it accompanied by my favorite Schubert piece.

  3. Lou says:

Congrats to everyone on getting final right. Oh and VJ do you remember the customers bogart, James Dean and Marilyn Monroe? And there was Elvis the joke salesman. So many great memories. There is a possible rematch between Ryan bilger and sam kavanaugh later this week.
