Final Jeopardy: 19th Century Notables (5-24-16)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/24/2016) in the category “19th Century Notables” was:

He died in New Orleans on Dec. 6, 1889, a little over 20 years after his treason case had been dropped.

6x champ Buzzy Cohen has now won $121,202. In his 7th game, he is up against these two guys: Victor Saymo, from Keaahu, HI; and Brian Roberts, from Arlington, VA.

Round 1 Categories: Places, Everyone – Crossword Clues “M” – Awesome Sauce – Stupid Answers–Misdirection – NYC TV – Peter & the Wolf

Buzzy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Awesome Sauce” under the $600 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. He had $600 and was the only one with any money. He bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.

While Lea & Perrins keeps its recipe for this “geographic” product secret, we know it contains garlic, anchovies & tamarind extract.  show

Brian finished in the lead with $3,200. Buzzy was second with $3,000 and Victor was in the hole at minus $200.

Round 2 Categories: May I Quote You? – 5 Letters, 1 Syllable – Science Fiction Titles in French – The News – Redrawing the Ottoman Empire – 4 Peters & A Wolf

Victor found the first Daily Double in “Ottoman Empire” under the $1,200 clue on the 3rd pick. He was in a tie for second place with Buzzy. They both were $600 in the hole and Brian had $3,200. He bet the $2,000 allowance and thought it was Jerusalem. That was WRONG.

Hotly contested today, this 9-letter region was made an “international zone”. show

Victor found the last Daily Double in “May I Quote You” under the $1,600 clue, 3 picks later. He was in third place at negative $2,200 now, $5,400 behind Brian’s lead. He bet the $2,000 allowance again and, this time, he was RIGHT.

Jesse Jackson: “Our flag is red, white, and blue, but our nation is a” this. show

Buzzy finished in the lead with $12,200, another runaway. Victor was next with $5,000 and Brian was in third place with $4,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS JEFFERSON DAVIS?

From Encyclopedia Virginia: “Union cavalrymen arrested former Confederate president Jefferson Davis near Irwinville, Georgia, on May 10, 1865. Davis was taken into custody as a suspect in the assassination of United States president Abraham Lincoln…. When investigators failed to establish a link between Davis and the Lincoln assassins, the U.S. government charged him instead with treason.” The impeachment proceedings against Andrew Johnson and other factors caused a long delay in trying Davis. When they finally got around to it in December 1868, the court deadlocked. Before it could go any further, President Johnson granted a full pardon and amnesty for treason “to all and to every person who, directly or indirectly, participated in the late insurrection or rebellion….” This time around, that included Davis and the decision not to prosecute was formally entered on the record on 2/15/1869.

Brian got it right. His $1,001 bet brought him up to $5,001.

Victor started out with Jeff Davis but switched to Beauregard. That cost him everything because he bet it all.

Buzzy went for the joke again. “You aren’t rid of me yet Trebek” and nodded yes enthusiastically when Trebek observed that Buzzy planned on pursuing that theme as long as he’s the champ. More like, as long as he can afford to, right? He could afford to bet nothing today so he won the match with $12,200 and his 7-day total is $133,402. Our first 7-day champ this season! Go Buzzy!

Buzzy needs to lose already he’s so stuck up and obnoxious he just needs to stop. I look forward to the person who makes him lose.

  2. Lou says:

Buzz’s jokes are too funny and well congrats to him on being a 7 time champion. Don’t forget about Greg Seroka he also won 7 games though his total was at lest 40000 more than buzz’s total. If this keeps up, Buzz may succeed Drew Horwood and Ben Ingram

    • VJ says:

@Lou, what I really should have said was that Buzzy is the first 7x champ on this season’s ToC list (which I just updated).

I didn’t forget about Greg Seroka but he was in the last ToC.

Also, Matt Jackson may very well end up being the winner of the most games in Season 32 but he was also in the 2015 ToC.

      • Lou says:

agreed, if you can see in yesterday’s game he used the same Saturday night live theme and I wonder if this will continue in the week ahead? I guess Buzz knows how to do stand up comedy for Trebek. But you are right, its been forever since we had a seven time champ.

  3. jacob ska says:

Victor did great to end up on the plus side going into fj given how often he fell into red territory during the game.

Congrats Buzzy. Keep it going. Your little daughter will be proud.

    • rhonda says:

I wonder what Buzzy’s daughter’s name is? She sounds so cute and smart.

      • VJ says:

@Rhonda. That really was cute. It reminded me of my daughter at that age. We always watched a lot of musicals and she would pick up the songs. She sang “What’s the Buzz” from Jesus Christ, Superstar, like “What’s the fuzz, tell me what’s happening.” I wonder if Buzzy’s daughter would think that song is about him. LOL!

@Jacob, it was a strange match.

        • Cece says:

Strange match indeed and, may I add, annoying. And Victor and Alex had the strangest chat, ever.

Maybe it’s just me, but I think Buzzy’s antics and jokes annoy Alex.

        • VJ says:

No, it’s not just you, Cece. I get the same impression and I think there’s been a big contrast between the way Alex reacted to Andrew and is reacting to Buzzy. Andrew had several big wins and IIRC, Buzzy’s biggest was his first game.

When Alex came out today and said “Well, folks, as you’ve discovered by now, our champion Buzzy Cohen is feeling rather confident, isn’t he?….” From the way he delivered that, I had the distinct feeling he wanted to say “feeling rather cocky” ROTFL

PS – Good to see you back. 🙂 Guessing you took a break with the tournament and Power Players

        • Cece says:

Yep, you’re right—Alex seemed OK with Andrew. And he also seemed very amused by and proud of Matt Jackson. And he joked with the dancing queen. So…What gives?

Thanks for the welcome. My life is a little chaotic lately—I only saw a couple of the Teacher’s Torney. And as for the week following that, I abstained. I’ve got no patience for Power Players/ Celebrity/Famous People/Look-at-Me People Week. :):)

        • VJ says:

Could be Alex feels like Buzzy is trying to upstage him or it could just be an act. TheWrap interviewed Buzzy before this game and Buzzy says: “The thing that people don’t realize is that, when I went into my audition, the one thing that the contestant coordinator said was, ‘It’s a game show — have fun.’ So that’s what I’m doing.”

Be that as it may, one thing’s for sure — there won’t be any FJ jokes from Buzzy if he doesn’t have a runaway and still has a shot at winning. I would love to see one from him if the person who beats him has a runaway.

        • EricS says:

Yeah, Cece. You have to wonder how many of them were looking for the answers (questions ) on a teleprompter.

      • Cece says:

VJ, yeah, let’s see what Buzzy does tomorrow.

        Eric, teleprompters…? Really…? Naaah. 🙂

BTW, Victor’s chat made me think of a Robin William’s number re GPS:

“I have a G.P.S. in my car. I was driving across the Golden Gate Bridge. I was halfway across and all of a sudden the car went, take a right turn.”
“What? No can do, Hal. I’m not that depressed really. And the car went, really, Robin? I saw ‘Bicentennial Man.'”

  4. VJ says:

I was really mystified why they stayed in that Stupid category. They might have had an easier time with the “Places” category they left on the board.

More triple stumpers and the whole Stupid category are online now

    • jacob ska says:

It was time for a break after that Discover Card miss under “Stupid Answers.” Glad Alex took one for commercials.

Can’t wait to see what Cece writes about this category.

      • Cece says:

That really cracked me up, Jacob! I didn’t know I had some kind of reputation around here.

Anyways, after what you wrote about that infamous category…’Nuff said.

        • jacob ska says:

@Cece, I also missed you. You have good and insightful comments on the games which I enjoy reading. You are a very bright young lady with great attention to details in the games. That is your reputation as far as I have seen. Keep the sense of humor going regardless of what life might throw your way.

        • Cece says:

Thank you, Jacob! What a sweet thing to say! 🙂

        • rhonda says:

I missed you, too, Cece!!! Nice having you back!

        • Cece says:

Thanks, Rhonda! Off topic, I know you love dogs so did you happen to read a story online about a dog almost euthanized before a student vet found a tick behind its ear?

        • rhonda says:

I hadn’t seen that story, Cece, thanks so much for telling me about it. I will look for it online. Wow, thank goodness for that student vet saving the dog’s life.

        • rhonda says:

What an amazing story and what a precious dog! So glad that his life was saved in the nick of time, it was a miracle. Thanks again, Cece.

  5. William Weyser says:

I’m happy that Buzzy was lucky on his 7th game, even though it was a runaway, and yesterday’s joke response of ”See you tomorrow, Trebek!” is still stuck in my head.
