Final Jeopardy: Mythology (5-16-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (5/16/2018) in the category “Mythology” was:

Ulysses & Menelaus were among those who emerged from the “womb” of this, called “tall as a mountain, ribbed with pine”

It’s the last semi-final match of the 2018 Teachers Tournament. Competing today: Larry Martin from Missouri, (2nd Grade), Jake Allen from Arkansas, (K-12 Gifted & Talented), Katherine Saxby from California, (HS English & French)

Round 1 Categories: Fer Sure, It’s the Valley, Dude – Fast Food – I Hear Voices – Alphabetic Homophones – Etiquette – Those Darn Etruscans

Jake found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Those Darn Etruscans” under the $600 clue on the 3rd pick of the round. He was in the lead with $1,000, $200 more than Larry in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was the Po. That was WRONG.

Larry found the first Daily Double in “Flags” under the $1,600 clue on the 6th pick. He was in the lead with $8,400 now, $2,600 more than Jake in second place. He bet $3,000 and he was RIGHT.

2 clues later, Katherine landed on the last Daily Double in “City of the Novel” under the $1,600 clue. In third place with $4,800, she had $6,600 less than Larry’s lead. She bet $2,000 and guessed Rome. That was WRONG.

“Fifty Shades of Grey” & “The Art of Racing in the Rain” show

Larry finished in the lead with $21,400. Jake was next with $12,600 and Katherine was in third place with $9,200.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE TROJAN HORSE?

In the beginning of Book II of Virgil’s “Aeneid”, Aeneas tells Dido, Queen of Carthage, about the Trojan Horse. You’ll only find snippets of Frank O. Copley’s translation online, where the quoted words in the clue come from: “Broken by war, forced back by fate, the Argive kings watched year on year slip by, 15 then built with help of Pallas’ holy hand a horse tall as a mountain, ribbed with pine.” Poetry in Translation has A.S. Kline’s version: “After many years have slipped by, the leaders of the Greeks, opposed by the Fates, and damaged by the war, build a horse of mountainous size, through Pallas’s divine art, and weave planks of fir over its ribs.” Copley uses “womb” for inside the horse; Kline uses “belly” so we’ve got that translation thing going on here like we did with the Cerberus FJ.

Katherine came up with Athena. She lost her $9,000 bet and finished with $200.

Jake thought it was Vesuvius. That cost him $9,000 as well, leaving him with $3,600.

Larry got it right. He bet $4,000 so he won the last semi-final with $25,400. The 3 finalists in the next 2 games are: Steve Mond, Claire Bishop and Larry Martin.

    So that means Claire Bishop & Larry Martin play against each other again in a rematch during the finals.

  2. rox says:

    Menelaus and Odysseus were in the Trojan horse. Ulysses was not.

    • John B. says:

      @ rox
      Odysseus and Ulysses are the same person. The Romans called Odysseus “Ulysses”.

    I wonder if Jake will get an interview with this local paper and tell them why he didn’t like the Mr. Sheep clue.

    @Rhonda, meantime, how did you like this one? Miss Manners says not “Miss” but this Joe Friday palindrome works for a woman “old enough to do her own banking” LOL!!

      I know, VJ, I couldn’t believe it, LOL!! I was cracking up and shaking my head at the same time!

  4. Lou says:

    Larry is looking good but that answer of Vesuvius still had me laughing. Vesuvius is a volcano.that destroyed Pompeii and killed thousands of people. It’s not a mythological creature. What was Jake thinking with that response, VJ? I was pretty stunned that one contestant knew about mythology and the Trojan war. Also John, I can see that either Claire and Larry will be neck in neck at the finals.

    • John B. says:

      @ Lou, Exactly! Plus Larry DOES have a broad range of knowledge, too bad only one can win. He and Claire are pretty much on the same level. They should pool their winnings and split the loot!

  5. John B. says:

    Congratulations, VJ!!
    Boy, did I screw that up!!!!! But after seeing Jake answering “Vesuvius” I feel a little better….I knew it couldn’t be a mountain. still I went with Mount Olympus.

    This is one of the moments where you slap your head when you see the answer……

    So that leaves Larry in a pretty good position, a second grade teacher who looks a little more mature than the other players. He won his 1/4 too, so he missed “Fargo” but had a very high score. I guess he knows a lot in many areas.. I guess experience counts for something after all….. (not in my case today though) :(:(:(
    If Larry can keep that up, he might win the whole thing, Claire notwithstanding. I don’t think Steve will be a factor. It’s gonna be between Larry and Claire imo.

  6. Richard Corliss says:

    Uncool, Larry! Being the fastest teacher than Steve tomorrow and Friday.

    • VJ says:

      I have a feeling that tomorrow, it’s going to be between Claire and Larry, Richard

      • VJ says:

        oh yeah, tomorrow and Friday 🙂

        • Richard Corliss says:

          So far the past winners of the Teachers Tournament were never on the wild card spots, winning their quarterfinal game and being the fastest teachers and Jennifer Giles will always be the only woman to win it.

      • John B. says:

        @VJ
        Just missed your post. You beat me in my opinion who will win the whole enchilada . If Steve wins then I’ll eat my Dolphins’ cap (with a lot of Ketchup….)

    • John B. says:

      @Richard
      After having “put my sock in it” consider the wide area of knowledge Larry has. Look at his 1/4 final score…And a second grade teacher with apparently a few years more experience from the looks of it. Plus, a lot will depend on the categories, the DDs and the FJs. If you get a lot of categories you are good at you are in clover. If the luck of the draw is against you….well.
      Not being chauvinistic I am nevertheless rooting for Larry, (maybe because he is more in my age bracket?) though Claire would deserve to win too. As Lou said, they will be neck and neck. L U C K and fluke DO play a BIG role. You can be a wiz in 100 categories , but if 6 come up where you are rather medium or weak then you’re biting the dust.

      • Richard Corliss says:

        Claire will play faster than Larry THIS TIME!

        • John B. says:

          @Richard
          We shall see, won’t we. Fast is not the only “ingredient”. When you’re fast but give a wrong answer……just read and think about everything that is involved, ok???
          So why don’t you as well put a sock in it (hate to use that expression, but since VJ let it stand I guess it is still alright to use) until Friday after the second game.Then we’ll know.

        • VJ says:

          You are so right, John. I think that’s the main reason that Claire and Larry are still standing – very few guesses.

          I don’t like that “put a sock in it” expression much myself, but you were joking, weren’t you Richard? Remember though, it’s hard to tell online when someone is joking or being nasty. Smileys help get the intent across.
