Final Jeopardy: Reference Works (4-9-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/9/2015), in the category “Reference Works” was:

Now in its fourth edition, the book with this title first appeared in 1918 as a 43-page guide for Cornell English students.

6x champ Kerry Greene’s winnings now total $146,598. Today her opponents are: Chris Hurt, from New York, NY; and Lindsey Love, originally from Eden, NY.

Round 1: Kerry found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double on her third pick in “Bartending Glossary” under the $600 clue. It was the first category of the game and she was the only one with any money — $600. She bet the $1,000 allowance she was RIGHT.

Chris finished in the lead with $18,500. Kerry was next with $15,400 and Lindsey was in third place with $10,200.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE”?

Cornell University English professor William Strunk, Jr., wrote The Elements of Style in 1918 and privately published it in 1919. He first revised it in 1935 with editor Edward A. Tenney. In 1957, at The New Yorker magazine, the style guide came to the attention of writer E. B. White, who had studied writing under Strunk in 1919. White wrote a feature story soon thereafter, praising Strunk’s devotion to lucid written English prose. Macmillan and Company commissioned White to revise “The Elements of Style,” then 41 years old, for a 1959 edition. Strunk had already passed away 13 years earlier, on September 26, 1946.

Lindsey got it right. She bet $8,501 and finished with $18,701.

Kerry thought it was “The Style Guide.” That cost her $15,399 and she finished with $1.

Chris also got it right. His $12,301 bet brought him up to today’s winning total of $30,801. And we have a new champ!

We will be seeing Kerry in the next Tournament of Champions. After Kerry defeated Michael Bilow on April 1st, Alex called her a giant-killer because Michael Bilow won $96K over 3 games. Let’s see what Alex has to say about Chris defeating a super-champ tomorrow.

During the chat, Chris told Alex about the time that Katie Couric borrowed a joke from him that made the New York Post when Katie delivered it. Unfortunately, he didn’t tell us the joke!

Anybody find the joke Katie Couric borrowed/stole from Chris? We’d like to know!

Congrats to Kerry for a good game and her big winnings. I believe she has done well to get this far and also I hope chris can win at least 4 games and accumulate a lot of money like Kerry did.

Yes, she did very well. I just updated the TOC list and she’s at the head of the class.

    Triple Stumpers:
    1) Faulkner’s Light in August
    2) James Spader’s characters in Boston Legal and The Blacklist
    3) Bob Kane, co-creator of Batman
    4) Whistler
    5) Cheery
    6) 1916 Japanese Beetle 1st appears on our shores
    7) Sorbonne 1257 named after French theologian Robert de Sorbon
    8) Oculus of Star Trek (I bet the Trekkies’ feelings were hurt)

It still was a good game. I was just surprised at the number of ts from such good contestants. But it happens.

Dreary was one that blew my mind the most. I mean Chris got the wrong call for “bleary” but neither Laura nor Kerry could make the leap to “dreary”. They weren’t getting that category at all until Alex gave them the Trebek nudge (c’mon dummies)

  4. jacob ska says:

@vj, during the chat didn’t Chris say the Katie Couric joke was in the New York Post? You have the New York Times. Two very different newspapers.

    • VJ says:

you’re right, Jacob. LOL. I knew I should have listened to that part again. Thanks!

      • Cece says:

VJ, in the paragraph that starts “We will be seeing Kerry in the…”, I’m a bit confused about the last sentence in that paragraph. Then again, it doesn’t take much to confuse me lately. :):)

Question: are TV categories making frequent appearances on J! lately, or is it my impression?

  5. jacob ska says:

Far too many triple stumpers in this game imo.

Nice run Kerry. See you in the TOC.

    Congrats Chris.

looks like it was a good game , given the #s before fj, all 3 DDs answered correctly and a very nice payday.
it was just a question of time. how ken was able to string 74 wins together is still beyond me. i don’t think that record will ever be broken, at least not in MY lifetime…and i intend to hang around for another 30 years..:)
congratulation chris! we will see tomorrow if this was a one day tripper or if he can follow up on today’s performance. since it will be fri, fj will probably be rather on the easy side again tomorrow.
