I think he miscalculated and thought it was a lock-game for Kelly. There’s no other good explanation for that wager.

  2. john watson says:

$21,200….How can you watch Jeopardy your entire life and not know what to bet??? He donated $21,199 to that champion….???

  3. rick says:

Not surprising how he bet. I did a study and concluded that at least 90% of players have no idea how to bet in final jeopardy. The only thing that most players know that if you are in first place that you bet enough to ensure you win if you get it right.

  4. Thomas says:

I’m still wondering how The Marine did not bet the whole thing! He’ll regret that the rest of his life…lol…hopefully he makes good humor out if it and it becomes a family story.

  5. Albert says:

I learn soooooo much from this show. From yesterday, I thought the Horn of Africa was aka Cape Horn. I’ll never make that mistake again. I have been learning a lot recently. There have been many tough questions recently.

  6. Jay McNally says:

Dan must have forgotten that the idea of the game is to WIN IT!

  7. Max says:

Just awful strategy, but what is the rule on ties? Would they have had a one question buzz-off?

    • VJ says:

Yes, Max, in a tie, they would have a tie-breaker question and whoever buzzed in first with the right response would win.

Of course, today, if Kelly felt he had to be that dollar, Dan just would have won.

    • Jay says:

There wouldn’t have been a tie because Kelly bet $1 and got it wrong.

  8. Lou says:

Dan making that wager was astounding especially when there was nothing else he can do. Kelly made a wise bet.

    • Lou says:

I apologize for that mistake VJ, it won’t happen again. hopefully you can overlook this.

  9. Josh says:

Wow, for Dan to make that wager in FJ is really astounding.

    • Howard says:

Dan used the strategy normally seen only when the game is a runaway. He bet just enough to clinch 2nd by $1 if both he and the woman in 3rd had been correct, and if she’d bet everything.

We’ll never know how it would have played out if Dan had a little more than half of Kelly’s total after two rounds. He blew that when he forgot the Triple O category and said “paramecium” instead of “protozoan.”

      • Josh says:

In addition to Dan’s wager, I also question Kelly wagering the $1. He could choose not to bet at all, and worst case scenario he gets into a tiebreaker question, which I can understand wanting to avoid, it’s a bit of a crapshoot. But if he’s going to wager anything, he has to assume that if he misses he loses if Dan gets it right (on the presumption that Dan wagers everything), but that if he (Kelly) gets it right, he wins. So with the goal being to win as much money as possible, why not at least wager SOMETHING meaningful (I don’t know, say 2-3K) in order to increase winnings. Point is, if Dan wagers correctly and gets it right, Kelly loses with a $1 bet or a $5K bet if he gets it wrong.
