Final Jeopardy: Holidays in Other Countries (4-23-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/23/2014), in the category “Holidays in Other Countries” was:

William Tubman’s nearly 3 decades of leadership is celebrated on his birthday, November 29, in this country.

2-day champ Julia Collins has won $36,605 so far. In her third game, she faces these two contenders: Brad Wright, from Spartanburg, SC; and Zia Jones, from Lake Forest, CA.

Round 1: Julia found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Conversions” under the $600 clue, right after talking about her encounter with Ken Jennings in the chat. She was in second place with $800, $2,600 less than Brad’s lead. She bet $700 and she was RIGHT.

WHAT IS LIBERIA?

Liberia only celebrates the birthdays of two its 22 Presidents: the first and 7th, J.J. Roberts on March 15th; and the 19th, William V.S. Tubman, on November 29th. Tubman was also Liberia’s longest-serving president, serving from his election in 1944 until his death in 1971. In 2012, an announcement on Legislature of Liberia stated that these separate birthdays were going to be done away with and an all-inclusive President’s Day was going to be established. However, current Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has continued to declare Tubman’s birthday a national holiday.

Brad guessed Sierra Leone (no President’s Day). He lost his $7,700 bet and finished with $100.

Zia came up with the Netherlands (April 27 – birthday of King Willem-Alexander). She lost $7,400, finishing with $800.

Julia got it right. She bet $4,200 so she won today’s match with $16,500. Her 3-day total is $53,105.

it’s amazing how a country in africa can be as stable as liberia when the neighbor (sierra leone, ironically “freetown being the capital”) ist still economically and politically in shambles, where 70% of the population lives in poverty and one military coup followed another. shows that it CAN be done. but then the u.k. helped liberia a lot. a very troubled continent….
julia is quietly moving up and up up and i wonder how far SHE will go,she got 3 FJs right in a row. congratulations!

She’s doing very well.. I hope she can win her fifth game.. It’d be a shame to make it all the way to four wins, just to lose #5 and not make it to the TOC this time. Most years, 4 wins is enough to get in the TOC.. Not this year.
