Final Jeopardy: Book Reviews (4-17-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/17/2015), in the category “Book Reviews” was:

A 2008 review of this novel, later filmed, compared it to “Battle Royale” and said “it’s a future we can fear”.

5x champ Alex Jacob’s haul so far this week is $129,401. In the last game of the week, he takes on these two players: Scott Blish, from Elmira Heights, NY; and Nikhil Neelakantan, from Richmond, VA.

Round 1: Scott found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Automotive Abbrevs.” under the $1,000 clue. He was in third place with $600, $4,000 less than Alex in the lead. He didn’t like the category and had already missed two previous two clues in it, so he bet only $5.00. As luck would have it, he was RIGHT on this one.

CPO: Certified this, a nicer way of saying used. show

Alex finished in the lead with $6,200. Scott was second with $1,805 and Nikhil was last with $1,800.

Round 2: Scott found the first Daily Double in “The Arts” under the $2,000 clue on the third pick of the round. He was now in second place with $3,405, $3,995 less than Alex in the lead. “Alex is too good. I gotta do it, he said, “true Daily Double.” He thought it was Boccioni but that was WRONG.

Around 1900, this young Italian painter was influenced by a group called the Macchiaioli, or “Stainers”. show

3 clues later, Nikhil found the last Daily Double in “In the Dictionary” under the $800 clue. In second place with $4,200, he had $3,200 less than Alex in the lead. He bet $2,000 and thought it was kabuki. That was WRONG.

Fittingly, it means “empty orchestra” in Japanese. show

Alex finished in the lead with $17,400. Nikhil was next with $10,200 and Scott was in third place with $3,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “THE HUNGER GAMES”?

The book review in question was John Green’s (“Scary New World”), under Children’s Book Reviews in the November 7, 2008 Sunday New York Times: “The past year has seen the publication of more than a dozen post-apocalyptic young adult novels that explore what the future could look like once our unsustainable lifestyles cease to be sustained…. Amid this rising sea of dystopias, two books stand apart: “The Dead and the Gone,” by Susan Beth Pfeffer, and “The Hunger Games,” by Suzanne Collins.”

Scott got it right. He doubled his score to finish with $7,200.

Nikhil didn’t have a guess. He lost his $7,201 bet, finishing with $2,999.

Alex also got it right. He bet $3,001 so he won this one with $20,401. His 6-day total is $149,802.

During the chat, Alex talked about his kindergarten ambition of being a game show contestant, while other children were planning on being astronauts and cowboys.

Her nomination in 1987 was the first best actress nomination for a science fiction film. show

Does anyone remember the full clue about the airline not granting reward miles for the cello that needed a seat?

    • VJ says:

This was the clue, Donna —

The Arts – $800 – Delta disallowed 250,000 frequent flyer miles this string instrument accrued by having its own seat next to Lynn Harrell.

    A couple of observations:

    1) With tonight’s 6-game win Alex J surpassed Kerry,
    6-games Alex J = $149,802
    6-games Kerry = $146,598

    2) With 3 DDs only one was answered correctly and that was worth only $5. Wild!

    • john blahuta says:

and after getting all 3 DDs yesterday, alex did not find even one today…still finished in the lead and came up with his only second correct fj. again, when he needed it.

  5. Tom Clark says:

If you think I’m not watching now, wait till you see me not watch during “Celebrity Week.” Life is much too short to waste time watching alleged celebrities making fools of themselves.

    • Kevin says:

Explain why you would waste your valuable time commenting about how much you hate game shows on a game show website.

      • Tom Clark says:

I don’t hate game shows. I hate “celebrity” week on Jeopardy. I also don’t like Alex Jacob’s weird personality, so I’m not watching until he’s gone.

  6. john blahuta says:

    @ Eric S

you came closest with your 2.15. i have to remember to incorporate decimals in my predictions when i am torn between 2 numbers….:):)

    • Eric S says:

See John, it’s about displacement.. Naturally, I know there won’t be 2.15 correct answers, but I was only off .15. So, if there had been 3 correct, I would have be off.85. Way more fun to add total displacement THIS way.

My favorite TV show of all time. I love a continual winner that I can root for each night. I’m deflated when the repeat winners – lose

  8. Leena says:

    • john blahuta says:

thank you. he is just outstanding in so many ways. i hope he will go on for a long time!

      • Leena says:

So do I! He could beat AC, JC, but I’m not as certain about Ken Jenin’s than those two.

  9. jacob ska says:
