Final Jeopardy: Foreign Leaders (4-10-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (4/10/2014), in the category “Foreign Leaders” was:

In 1964 he was convicted of sabotage & conspiracy & served over 20 years in prison.

New champ Sandie Baker won $22,400 in yesterday’s game with the only correct response in FJ. Today she is up against these two players: Jessica Guard, from New York, NY; and Bruce Leaman, from Thunder Bay, Ontario, CA.

Round 1: Sandie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Five Families” under the $1,000 clue. She was in the lead with $2,600, $600 more than Jessica in second place. She bet $1,000 and guessed “Gandhi.” That was WRONG.

Jessica finished in the lead with $5,600. Sandie was second with $3,600 and Bruce was last with $2,600.

Round 2: Bruce found the first Daily Double in “International Authors” under the $2,000 clue. He was in second place with $6,200, $3,800 less than Sandie’s lead. He bet $3,000 and guessed “Chambers.” That was WRONG.

Bruce found the last Daily Double in “Supreme Court Justices” under the $1,600 clue. In third place with $8,000, he had $6,000 less than Sandie’s lead. He bet $100 and, yeah, he was RIGHT.

Sandie finished in the lead with $14,000. Jessica was next with $11,200 and Bruce was in third place with $8,100.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right. No surprise but it’s days like this, when FJ! is like a $200 clue, you sort of wish someone had finished with $35K and bet it all. A big payday like that just wasn’t in the cards today. None of them knew jack about Central America so practically a whole category went to waste!

WHO IS NELSON MANDELA?

In June of 1964, Nelson Mandela and seven other defendants, including the former secretary-general of the banned African National Congress (ANC), Walter Sisulu, were sentenced to life in prison. As members of the ANC – the main African nationalist movement – they campaigned for an end to the oppression of black South Africans. But the movement was banned in 1960 following the Sharpeville massacre and campaigners decided they had no choice but to resort to violent means. (BBC: On This Day (6/12/1964))

Bruce bet $8,000 so he finished with $16,100.

Jessica bet $5,001 and finished with $16,201.

Sandie looked a bit worried because she was trying to rewrite her answer to make it neater when time ran out. Luckily, she didn’t cross out her first response. She bet $8,500 so she won the game with $22,500. Her 2-day total is $44,900.
