TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE PORT AUTHORITY?

The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (PANYNJ) is an interstate agency formed in 1921 “to develop and modernize the entire port district in order to improve commerce and trade.” Overseeing transportation on land, sea and air. It is the third largest port in the nation.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal (PABT) in midtown Manhattan is the first of three bus terminals constructed and operated by PANYNJ. The largest and busiest bus terminal in the USA, it serves some 200K people on an average weekday. Located on Eighth Avenue between 40th Street and 42nd Street, PABT is a stone’s throw from Times Square.

Mara got it right. She bet $4,000 and finished with $8,200.

Lisa also got it. She bet $4,201 and finished with $9,601.

Nicole thought it was the MTA. She lost $1,201, dropping her score down to $8,399. That made Lisa Sriken the new Jeopardy! champ.

Wow – Howard and VJ took my comments! Great minds, and all that!

To wit: Mara and Mayim, Lisa all over the place and so demonstrative.

The APGAR was, believe it or not, another bad question. Virginia Apgar was who created it (and, Howard, I think she had a stamp!). It was after the fact that the “appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, respiration” was created. It wasn’t a de novo acronym.

What a low scoring affair. Was hoping for more.

And, I lived in NYC for 3 years, and said “MTA”. I think I rode a bus twice – maybe once.

Oh, and, the Triumvirate clue! Haha!

  2. Howard says:

Three delightful contestants (other than Lisa’s incessant facial contortions), but a very uneven contest punctuated by many wrong answers. On the first DD, the clue gave the APGA portions of the APGAR score, but Lisa didn’t pick up on that and said “speech,” which of course is not measurable in a newborn. I had no clue what each letter stood for, but figured out the R-word.
She was VERY fortunate to get back into the game right at the end. She was up and down like a yoyo the whole game.

Stumpers were very tough. Only one I knew was the Charlie Brown/Senator Pro Tem.
I thought all 3 DDs were easy, for a change,

In 1972 I was a temporary mail carrier for the Times Square PO on W 40th St, adjacent to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Last time I visited, the PO was gone. I’ve taken many a ride to and from that building, as recently as last October.

the $400 clue in Double Jeopardy they were supposed to get in time was Tough Tough-Guy TV.

  4. Rick says:

Hmmmmm………I came up with the New York Transit Authority for FJ. I don’t suppose that Ken Jennings would have accepted that?

    • Howard says:

Nope. As far as I know, the MTA operates city buses and subways, and the Long Island RR. Port Authority a different entity. I assume it also oversees the docks. I’m not sure there’s a NY Transit Authority these days, although I think that was a name that preceded the MTA.

  5. Jacob Ska says:

I can’t believe Nicole missed final jeopardy. She lives in Long island and I’m sure she’s been to the city frequently. She probably overthought it. I expected the contestant from Boston to miss it and she got it correct. Always surprises on Jeopardy. 🤔🤔

Can’t wait to see the show tonight. I want to see Nicole’s reaction. Wow! I’m shocked.

    • VJ says:

It never occurred to me this morning, but maybe she thought the same two words couldn’t be the FJ answer when they were the answer to the 1950 hint

      • Jacob Ska says:

I just watched the show and Nicole’s reaction was exactly what I expected. It was a look of “I overthought this.” Things like that can and do happen.

Btw, I posted that the non-New Yorker contestant was from Boston but she was introduced as being from Washington DC & VJ has her as being from there as well. Don’t know where I got Boston. 🤣

      • Marilyn says:

I must have missed it. What 1950 hint?

        • VJ says:

Hi Marilyn, it’s this part of the final clue — the USA’s busiest bus terminal, opened in 1950 (referring to the bus terminal). I put their acronyms (PABT & PANYNJ) in the info part to show they start with the same 2 words, but have different endings. Locals just call them both “Port Authority” as far as I’ve ever heard.

  6. VJ says:

That first Roman triumvirate won a Master Minds contestant $10K yesterday.

More coincidences: I just watched “Man in the Attic” starring Jack Palance last night.

After that time they had the Mayim categories with Ken hosting, we wondered what he was thinking about Mara’s resemblance to Mayim 🤣
