Final Jeopardy: Navy Ships (3-26-15)
The Final Jeopardy question (3/26/2015), in the category “Navy Ships” was:
First designated as Armored Cruiser No. 1, this ship was commissioned in 1895 and operated on our East Coast and the Caribbean.
New champ Jacqueline Hawkins won $23,300 in yesterday’s game. Today she is up against these two players: Al Cho, originally from Tempe, AZ; and Laura Weiner, from Quincy, MA.
Round 1: Jacqueline found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Is There a Doctor in the House” under the $800 clue. She was in second place with $1,800, $200 behind Al’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.
It’s the 15-letter word for the type of doctor who deals with the structure, functions & diseases of the eye. show
Jacqueline finished in the lead with $6,600. Al was second with $4,800 and Laura was last with $200.
Round 2: Jacqueline found the first Daily Double in “Science Museums” under the $2,000 clue. She was in the lead with $13,400, $5,400 more than Al in second place. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.
This city’s museum of Science & Industry is housed in the only remaining building from the 1893 Columbian expo. show
Al found the last Daily Double in “Irates of the Caribbean” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $12,000, he had $4,600 less than Jacqueline’s lead. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.
In 1636 the natives probably got restless when Aruba was occupied by this Dutch company (remember your hemisphere). show
Al finished in the lead with $20,000. Jacqueline was next with $16,600 and Laura was in third place with $5,400.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Much like the Texas, the Maine was a 2nd class battleship featuring staggered, side-mounted main guns. She was commissioned in 1895, and originally classified as an armored cruiser. In 1898, the Maine was dispatched to Havana to protect American interests in the midst of Cuban unrest over Spanish rule. On February 15, she exploded, resulting in the death of about 260 of her crew. (The Steel Navy)
NavSource Naval History has a list and photos of all Navy Cruisers.
Laura got it right. She bet $3,000 so she finished with $8,400.
Jacqueline thought it was the Delaware (a dreadnought battleship). That cost her $5,799 and she finished with $10,801.
Al wrote down two question marks followed by “George Washington” (aircraft carrier). He lost his $13,300 bet and ended up with $6,700. So Jacqueline Hawkins remains champ with a 2-day total of $34,101.
During the chat, Jacqueline talked about a concert she and her friends put on when she sang 19th century classical songs in 5 different languages: Italian, Spanish, German, French and English.
2 years ago:: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Presidential Elections”

She made a very smart wager in FJ. No matter what, Laura couldn’t beat her. If she was right and Al was wrong, she would beat him.
still laura was the only one right. imo an undeserved win. the categories were a joke, teenage tournament material.
I respectfully disagree. If winning the game was solely based on getting FJ right, what would be the use of even having the earlier rounds?
Winning is not based on deserving because you got FJ in whatever category – it’s based on having the highest total.
I was disappointed no one knew this one in Poe Folks: “In ‘The Cask of Amontillado’, Montresor seeks revenge on this wine connoisseur.”
Ha, ha. Thought about you during that category. I said ” bet vj is yelling at the tv.”
Ha, ha. I was actually smiling when I saw the clue — my favorite Poe short story and when they missed it, I exclaimed: “For the love of God!”
(I gave them a pass on A. Gordon Pym)
So you were yelling at the tv. LOL
well, not exactly yelling. It’s the line from the story that Montresor says and Fortunato repeats as he plasters in the last stone.
The other thing I said during the show was Chris-tuh-fuh on one of the March 26th clues. Alex didn’t do it right.
Yet another prime example of how the person in second should not always bet everything.
She bet the very most which she should have. Beautiful game theory application.
a lot of kid’s material. and the 3rd dd?? “remember your hemisphere”? why not give him the 4K right away? and the 2 misses?? only 1 “remembered the maine…”
only laura would have deserved to win. if jacqueline gets opponents tomorrow who are not completely off she will not finish the week as champion. the whole incident with the maine and only ONE remembered an important and may i say WELL known occurrence in u.s. (naval) history. as a born foreigner i am embarrassed by the lack of american history knowledge the players showed at today’s fj, except laura. and if you think i am too sarcastic or critical:
1. please watch the game again and
2. let’s remember how we thought this should be a clean sweep or at least 2 solves.
??? 1895+navy ship+east coast+caribbean=uss maine.
I suggest 2 of these contestants become tourists to Havana, Cuba to see the memorial that was renovated in 2013 to the USS Maine.
Somebody didn’t watch Jeopardy last year knowing they wanted to be on the show.
Anyway, congrats Jacqueline.
There was a clue last year on Jeopardy about the Maine. Where were they?
where they were i don’t know jacob! but i know the state they were/ are in : oblivion!!
maybe because naval history is a sub-special part for me in history i am especially offended. h…, i was STANDING THERE !!
as a ps..it’s as bad as not knowing about the alamo. and with j. and t. i am not even so sure if they do…
maybe the rental car company.
The clue last year was in the first semi-final match of the Teen Tournament LINK
and THAT clue was phrased more difficult than today’s. also one solve.
Thanks vj. I was sure my memory wasn’t failing me. Normally when repeat champions are on Jeopardy they will say the best way to study for the show is to watch the show. It appears that’s good advice because clues seem to resurface albeit in different wording but they do “recycle” clues.
I think there was another clue this past January about the Maine — Spanish American war category, if I remember correctly.
You remember correctly, Cece. The 1/19/2015 category was Spanish-American War and it was the $200 clue: “Fitzhugh Lee, U.S. Consul General in Havana, advised President McKinley not to send this ship to the city; he was ignored” LINK
@Cece, you are correct. But if I remember it had to do with warning not to send it to Havana rather than giving the historical detailed depiction of the ship. I may be wrong.
@VJ & Jacob, I’m glad I’m not crazy, well…at least not about that. 🙂
Thanks for the link, VJ.
You’re welcome, Cece. Al reminded someone on Twitter of Art Carney, although he named Art’s character on the Honeymooners
@VJ, the analogy was lost on me — why does he think that? 🙂
I really have no idea — I just saw it on twitter and thought it was a funny coincidence. Al didn’t make me think of Art Carney/Ed Norton at all today. I was just wishing he would stop shaking his buzzer — you know when they do that and it makes that clicking noise, and you’re saying WHY?? I might be wrong, but it seems to me that buzzer shakers rarely win.
It was a funny coincidence! Art Carney is probably turning in his grave.
“…buzzer shakers rarely win.” — LOL! It drives Tom crazy, too! (“Like it was a bottle of Mylanta”, he quipped once.)
…and we have to stop posting/writing at the same time…:):)
