WHAT IS THE IKEA EFFECT?

IKEA was founded in Sweden in July of 1943 by 17-year-old Ingvar Kamprad and as of 2008, has become the world’s largest furniture retailer, particularly known for ready-to-assemble items. What is now called the IKEA Effect is the conclusion of studies held in 2011 that found that participants in the studies were willing to pay a lot more for goods they could put together themselves, as opposed to similar pre-assembled items. You can learn more about these studies and the IKEA effect in the Harvard Business School study “When Labor Leads to Love” and you can experience the IKEA effect for yourself by visiting IKEA.com.

Personally, as a mom, there probably is nothing I disliked more back in the day than a toy you have to put together yourself, after needing a pair of pliers and/or a screwdriver to open the dang package.

Bonnie got it right. She bet $9,795 and finished with $19,595.

Amal got it, too. He bet it all and doubled his score to $28,600.

Jon wrote down “The Chia Pet Effect.” Ya gotta love it but, alas, Chia Pet is not a company. His $7,777 bet was not lucky for him today. It brought him down to $13,223, and made Amal a 2x Jeopardy! champ with $43,200.

What’s with Amal and the buzzer? Did he get “shocked” when ringing in for that last clue on Wednesday’s show ?

  2. Rick says:

The answers were tough tonight, and I never even heard of the Swedish company since I never ran across any of their ready to assemble furniture. Anyways, I don’t understand the negative reaction that occurred with Dr. Oz serving as the host for two weeks. Personally, I never liked Dr. Oz’s show, but he’s doing a fine job as the Jeopardy game host. Actually, the Jeopardy game does not revolve around the host, but rather the game itself so people shouldn’t keep dwelling on the host of the show. Whoever the host is, the game will go on regardless.

I think many of the objections to Dr. Oz have been overwrought, but I do understand not wanting the purveyor of the show to be someone known for pushing pseudoscience.

    • VJ says:

Hi Rick, I can’t believe you never heard of IKEA. I bought a bookcase from them once when I lived in NJ and one of those artist’s wooden jointed mannequins. I still had the latter and just gave it to my granddaughter last week. That gal can draw!

No one over here has been adding to or dwelling on the Dr. Oz controversy. Objections were registered by many directly to the show by petition and on Twitter. But Oz is hosting anyway. Maybe Alex Trebek wanted him to guest host since they were friends. Also, I put a link to the page on Jeopardy where people who still want to complain about a fait accompli can do so.

        The Blizzard of Oz.

VJ, did you notice the coincidence? The Russo-Japanese war referenced in the first DD ,also appeared on “A whole row”, on the Spoiler Talk page.

        • VJ says:

Hey Cece, that did ring a bell with me when I was watching the game but I wasn’t sure if it was in the old clues today or Monday and meant to take a look. That’s cool that you noticed it, too and thanks for reminding me! I forgot because I got sidetracked by a lotta stuff.

    • Quinn says:

@rick I also am surprised you’ve never heard of Ikea! They make DELICIOUS swedish meatballs there.

    • Kathy says:

I agree. Alex just wanted people to be nice, and he would be offended to see the way people are treating Dr. OZ.

  3. JR says:

VJ, I wish to thank you for the wonderful job you do recapping the show. I cannot always find the time to watch, but I truly enjoy the recaps. Thank you!

chia pet effect LOLOL! That was the best funniest response that I’ve ever seen today. Overall I remember Kinky Boots was also the best wrong response that was written by Choyon Mandrekar previously. It will give me such a laugh. Awesome play today by Amal and congrats to Bonnie on getting final right. If Amal can get his third win tomorrow, he will not be a part of the two game curse. Jon was a great player today, but he was under a lot of pressure. Kind of feel bad for him.

  5. Jacob Ska says:

VJ, would you like to share your reaction when “Chia Pet” was revealed? I envisioned maybe some response like “legos” as perhaps an incorrect response but certainly not Chia Pet. Remember I wrote this morning you never know with contestants? I can’t wait to see this game just to see reactions. I really feel bad for Jon. It appears he was a good player but our minds tend to take us in unusual directions when under pressure.

    • VJ says:

I laughed and sang Ch-ch-ch-chia, Jacob. I thought it was the best wrong answer I’ve seen in a while 😁
