In quarterfinal #3 of the Jeopardy!’s 2024 Invitational Tournament, the contestants are: Terry O’Shea, a software engineer from Brooklyn, NY; Matt Jackson, a grad student in computer science & public policy orig. from Washington, D.C.; and Alan Lin, a software engineer from Los Angeles, CA.
Today is the 9000th episode of Jeopardy! since 1984. There’s a special segment at the end of the episode honoring announcer Johnny Gilbert, who will be 96 this year on July 13th. Johnny participated in every one of those 9000 episodes.

Matt found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “he Electoral College” under the $600 on the 11th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,200, $800 more than Alan in second place. Matt bet it all and he was RIGHT.
Though he won the popular vote, he flunked out of the Electoral College by 5 votes show
Matt finished in the lead with $9,600. Terry was in second place with $4,200. Alan was last with $2,800. All clues were shown.
Round 2 Categories: The Old Testament – “House” of Entertainment – In the National Women’s Hall of Fame – Italian Words & Phrases – Composers – Time for Desert
Alan found the first Daily Double in “Time for Desert” under the $1,600 clue on the 4th pick. He was in second place with $4,000 now, $9,200 less than Matt’s lead. Alan bet it all he was RIGHT.

Matt got the last Daily Double in “The Old Testament” under the $1,200 clue on the 10th pick. In the lead with $20,000, he had $10,400 more than Alan in second place. Matt bet a big $12,000 and he was RIGHT.

Matt finished in the lead with a runaway $41,200. Alan was in second place with $14,000 and Terry was last with $5,800. All clues were shown.

WHAT IS THE ROSETTA STONE?
Rosetta is an Egyptian port city, 40 miles east of Alexandria. It was there that the Rosetta Stone was discovered in 1799 by soldiers in Napoleon’s army. The British Museum, where the Stone is located, devotes an “Everything You Wanted to Know” page to it: “The Stone is a broken part of a bigger stone slab….. The writing on the Stone is an official message, called a decree, about the king (Ptolemy V, r. 204–181 BC). The decree was copied on to large stone slabs called stelae, which were put in every temple in Egypt. It says that the priests of a temple in Memphis (in Egypt) supported the king. The Rosetta Stone is one of these copies, so not particularly important in its own right.”
What was important was the same decree on the Rosetta Stone was inscribed in 3 different ways: in hieroglyphs, in the cursive Egyptian script called Demotic and in Ancient Greek as Egypt was still under Greco-Macedonian rules. After defeating Napoleon, the British gained possession of the Stone under the 1801 Treaty of Alexandria. 19th century scholars used their knowledge of Ancient Greek to decipher the Ancient Egyptian writings on the Rosetta Stone.
Terry only had “Rosetta”, which was not acceptable. She bet and lost her whole $5,800.
Alan got it right and added a dollar to finish with $14,001.
Matt got it right, too. He bet $121 so he won the game and the semifinal spot with $41,321.

To describe Matt in one word: intense. But, rolled like a truck!
For Final, I thought of the Rosetta Stone, but I thought of 1823 for some reason, and discounted it. So, I had no answer.
Wow, Matt bulldozed some strong opponents. I guess they’re all too young to know that “sexy” song.
First FJ I’ve hit in a number of shows. I believe I saw it long ago at the British Museum.
Johnny Gilbert’s age is rarely mentioned, but he’s 95. He was a singer long ago.

What a memorable way to celebrate 9000th show. It’s a big number and a big milestone to celebrate 9000 shows on television.
