WHAT IS “THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO”?

The quote in today’s final clue comes from Chapter I. “Bourgeois and Proletarians” of “The Communist Manifesto” (1848) by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. You can read the whole chapter at Marxists.org if you have the time and inclination. If not, the full sentence is: “The discovery of America, the rounding of the Cape, opened up fresh ground for the rising bourgeoisie.” Marxists.org also has the original German over there. In that language, the quote reads: “Die Entdeckung Amerikas, die Umschiffung Afrikas schufen der aufkommenden Bourgeoisie ein neues Terrain.”

As for the chapter’s title, Footnote 1 provides these definitions:

“1. By bourgeoisie is meant the class of modern capitalists, owners of the means of social production and employers of wage labour.

By proletariat, the class of modern wage labourers who, having no means of production of their own, are reduced to selling their labour power in order to live. [Engels, 1888 English edition]”

Hannah was not able to complete her response, even though she knew it. She bet and lost her whole $9,000.

Caleb got it right. He bet $5,617 and won the game with $29,235, and that completes the semifinals line-up. Tomorrow, the first semifinalists to compete will be Lucas Miner, Jackson Jones and Avi Gupta.

Even though it wasn’t Maggie’s day, she still had a great time returning to the show. She also gave a thumbs up after Mayim told her she’s taking home $5,000.

  2. Trevor Panno says:

Hannah ran out of time unfortunately.

  3. Collin says:

Category “In The Sport” in Jeopardy Round has turned out to be a shutout. Everything is triple stumpers in that category.

  4. Ryan McClelland says:

First episode in the High School Reunion tournament with a contestant unable to compete in FJ!. At least, Caleb made this game a runaway.

  5. Rick says:

An obvious choice for FJ, and quite unlike the ambiguous FJ of yesterday.

  6. Richard Corliss says:

Wow. Maggie couldn’t get that signaling device working too well today. Caleb made it really tough for her and Hannah despite missing that last Daily Double.
