Today’s Final Jeopardy question (3/19/2018) in the category “U.S. Government” was:

Before signing the bill creating this, Pres. George W. Bush noted its “nearly 170,000 employees” & “a new kind of war”

New champ, Rahul Gupta, won $12,399 last Friday. In his second game, his challengers are: Regis Michelena, from Casper, WY; and Lisa Mueller, from Naperville, IL.

Lisa finished in the lead with $3,000. Rahul was second with $2,800 and Regis was last at zero.

You’ve Got Mail: During the chat, Alex told Lisa that if she had addressed her email to him when she was 11, he would have answered it personally. She asked him if that’s still true and he said yes.

Round 2 Categories: Washington State History – Sunny Quotes – Technology – On-Screen Romances – “Hit” & “Miss” – Must Sea TV

Rahul found the first Daily Double in “Must Sea TV” under the $1200 clue on the 14th pick. He was in the lead with $10,800 at this point, $5,400 more than Lisa in second place. He bet $4,800 and went with Magellan. That was WRONG.

An episode of the BBC’s “Oceans” explored the San Andreas fault line in this sea named for a conquistador. show

Lisa found the last Daily Double in “Sunny Quotes” under the $1,200 clue, with 10 clues left after it. In second place with $5,400, she had $2,200 less than Rahul’s lead. She went true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

Lisa finished in the lead with a runaway $16,800. Rahul was next with $8,000 and Regis was in third place with $6,000.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE DEPT. OF HOMELAND SECURITY?

From 9-11 Research:: “The Homeland Security Act (HSA) was pushed through Congress in the months following 9/11, ostensibly to “organize a government that is fractured, divided and under-prepared to handle the all-important task of defending our great nation from terrorist attack.” The 484-page Act prescribed the biggest change in the federal government in over 50 years. Its passage, on November 25, 2002, consolidated more than 20 existing federal agencies into a single Homeland Security Department…. Not since President Truman created the Department of Defense in 1947 has the federal government undergone such dramatic restructuring.”

This White House press release contains President’s Bush”s remarks before signing the bill in the East Room on November 25, 2002.

Regis wrote down the right response, then crossed it out in favor of NSA. That cost him everything but a dollar.

Rahul got it right. He bet $4,000, bringing him up to $12,000.

Lisa got it, too. She didn’t bet anything, winning the match with the $16,800 she already had. So we start the week with a runaway game, just like last Monday.

Final Jeopardy (3/19/2018) Rahul Gupta, Lisa Mueller, Regis Michelena

A triple stumper from each round:

THE FLIES OF THE LORD ($800) Though some say “a flaw in” this, the Bible verse where we probably got the expression specifically mentions flies

ON-SCREEN ROMANCES ($1200) 50 years after these 2 actors fell in love in “Barefoot in the Park”, they fell in love again in “Our Souls at Night”, co-starring me, Iain Armitage

    Whitmania strikes again.

    • VJ says:

Yes, Cece! omg! but I think that’s his first clue this year, and it’s March. We can deal with him once a quarter 🙂

I thought it was promising earlier in the month when he didn’t show up in the Name That Poet category

  2. VJ says:

I was hoping that they had a clue on Caribou Soup in that World of Soup category. The only reason I even know about it is because I read a poem about it by a 5th grader years ago that I have never forgotten. It was, um, not what I was expecting from the opening lines 😀 😀

“Caribou, caribou come to my land… we love you”

If you want to read it, scroll down– it’s under the picture that says Barrenground Herd

Regis couldn’t get much rhythm going but he should have gone for the first response instead of the NSA But congrats to Lisa on winning big. She was wise to bet nothing but rahul had used the chuck forrest bounce last week but it didn’t work out in his favor today VJ. Also how often do you see the chuck Forrest bounce strategy used in the jeopardy game VJ?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, yeah, Regis must have second guessed thinking his first instinct was too obvious. I hoped Rahul would have a longer run. That big DD bet he made was a setback but it looked like he would be able to overcome it til Lisa got that last DD. That gave her a nice jolt of confidence. I really don’t pay much attention to whether they bounce around the board or not.

      @Rhonda — I hope Robert Redford doesn’t watch Jeopardy!

VJ, I couldn’t believe no one knew Barefoot in the Park! Also, I watched Our Souls at Night and just loved it.

        • VJ says:

Rhonda, remember he was a triple stumper in January, too, on a Twilight Zone clue? Maybe they ought to put in a movie people will remember him for — like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid or The Sting. Or that one with Demi Moore, uh, Indecent Proposal?? (I know he won an Oscar for Best Director for Ordinary People but I hope they don’t ask for that).

I’m going to watch Our Souls at Night soon as I can. I’m sure if you loved it, I will too 🙂

        • rhonda says:

That’s right, I forgot all about that already! What if they ask about The Way We Were or All the President’s Men?
I’m glad you’re going to watch Our Souls at NIght when you have a chance, and I do think you will love it as much as I did.
