Final Jeopardy: The French Revolution (3-16-16)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (3/16/2016) in the category “The French Revolution” was:
The last prisoner moved before the Bastille was stormed, this nobleman left behind the MS For his most infamous work.
2x champ Philip Tiu brought his winnings up to $71,098 yesterday, with some very bold bets. His challengers in this third game are: Elena Gray-Blanc, originally from Santa Barbara, CA; and Geoff Mitelman, from Westchester County, NY. They would be well-advised to keep Philip away from the Daily Doubles if they want to win!
Round 1 Categories: 19th Century Novels by Quote – Behavior & Psychology – I Have a Preposition for You – The National Road – Get – A Grip on It
Philip found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “19th Century Novels” under the $400 clue. He was in the lead with $1,800, $200 more than Geoff in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and thought it was “Animal Farm”. That was WRONG.
“‘That’s a fine death!’ said Napoleon as he gazed at Bolkonsky.” show
Geoff finished in the lead with $7,400, Philip was second with $2,800 and Elena was last with $1,200.
Round 2 Categories: This is my People – World Cities – Tulipmania – Musicians’ Autobiographies – 9-Letter Words – The Wright Brothers
Philip found the first Daily Double in “My People” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $11,200, he had $200 less than Geoff’ lead. He bet $11,000 and he was RIGHT.
Cochise & Geronimo. show
Mucho frustration. We did not even get to see the last Daily Double. It was under one of the 4 clues left in Musicians’ Autobiographies or that $2,000 clue in Wright Brothers.
Philip finished with a runaway $23,800. Geoff was next with $11,000 and Elena was in third place with $1,200.
TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade wrote “The 120 Days of Sodom” in 1785 while a prisoner in the Bastille. “The scroll, which measure 12 meters (39 feet) long, was discovered in Sade’s cell when the jail was stormed during the French Revolution in 1789 (Sade had already been transferred to another facility). Since then, it has been stolen, hidden, and passed back and forth between courts in France and Switzerland.” (France 24)
Elena got it right. She bet $1,199 and finished with $2,399.
Geoff came up with Voltaire. He didn’t bet a sou so he remained at $11,000.
Philip also got it. He only bet $1,700 today so he won this match with $25,500. His 3-day total is $96,598.
This was the last triple stumper in “Tulipmania”: ($1,600) The tulip tree named for its tulip-like flowers is also known by this “widely liked” name.

Philip is the perfect embodiment of the point I have made of the power of the DD. Would you rather compete with others to decide the game or decide it yourself alone?
That being said, yesterday Philip could have put the game away and still left himself enough for a parachute. Today, he left 200 on the table.
It would have been awesome to see him bet $5 on the last DD. Btw, it was nice to see Elena leave that obvious choice for Geoff.
Philip is lucky that his $11,000 wager paid off in 2nd DD. We haven’t talked about Coryat scores in a long time. Looking at yesterday’s Coryat scores Philip had 15600 and Sean had 13600 which means without that huge DD wager of 19000 yesterday Philip and Sean would have been a lot closer entering into fj imo. That 19000 was a desperation wager.
Today’s DD wager is beginning to show a pattern in Philip’s strategy that may not always work in his favor.
I guess his strategy is simply to go for a runaway if the chance presents itself and, yeah, so far he has been real lucky with that. He was even lucky with the one he missed today that he didn’t have a lot to lose. (I had to LOL when he went for AF) .
Anyway, I am miffed that we didn’t see the last DD because Philip stayed in that Clue Crew Wright Brothers category. Boo hiss.
Blame Elena. It probably wasn’t in that small category she chose.
If we had seen it, Philip might have made a lot more money.
I haven’t looked at that 6th question game they have on their website. They may post the unseen clues there?
I know Elena went up to the $400 clue in Tulip Mania after the $1600 clue in Wright Brothers but I don’t believe it ate up as much time as those long $1200 and $1600 clues in Wright Brothers after the minute to go had already been called.
The Musicians’ Autobiographies clues were much shorter. They probably could have knocked those off in that time. I also think the DD was under the $1200 or $1600 clue in that category.
I don’t look at that extra 6th clue thing either but I know it has been around a while, even before Jeopardy! started putting it on their website. My local TV station used to have a page that had it (I know because I linked to it).
I was actually praying for Philip not to find that last DD; his bets make me nervous. But I wanted the other 2 contestants to find it. I don’t think he liked the Musician’s bios category, as he got the one clue wrong. I too preferred the Wright Brothers category, sorry…:)
Agree with Jacob that Sean played a great game yesterday, and Philip might not have had a runaway if it wasn’t for the huge DD bet. But, as Eric points out, such is the “power of the DD”.
Agree with VJ — he has been really lucky so far; tomorrow or later on, a big DD bet may turn out to be his swan song. 🙂
I think Philip has a cute sense of humor. 🙂
Well, Philip has certainly made the most of it. It’s not just that he and Sean were close before the BIGGETY BIG DD yesterday — remember, in his first game, he was pretty far behind when Gordon blew it and handed him the catch up DD. LOL. So even if he strikes out on a big DD bet, he’ll certainly have nothing to regret.
PS. It was Geoff who got the In Sync clue wrong.
Aww Cece, you need not worry : the likeable Philip would’ve bet $100 or less.
😀
He has surpassed Michael Billow’s 3-day total.
