WHAT IS THE PONY EXPRESS?

Buffalo Bill Cody published his autobiography in 1879 at age 33, going into great detail about his alleged Pony Express adventures, claiming he was hired by the outfit at age 14 because he “had already earned a reputation for coming safe out of perilous adventures.” WyoHistory.org’s article about Buffalo Bill and the Pony Express also goes into great detail about how the public didn’t necessarily believe these tall stories but were nonetheless captivated by them, making Buffalo Bill a legend in his own time. The opening act of his Wild West Show was a recreation of a Pony Express rider switching horses.

From 2014: THE OLD WEST ($400) More common name for the Central Overland Calif. & Pikes Peak Express Co., which used a steamer to go from Sacramento to S.F.

Jade went with the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. She lost everything but one dollar.

John came up with the Iditarod. (yep, I had to look that up.) He lost $12,600 and had $1,000 left.

Will thought it was the transcontinental railroad. He only lost $5,801 and won the game with the remaining $15,599. His 3-day total is $70,601.

Was a bit disappointed Alex chose to repeat only “a race against time” in his reveal of the correct answer. The key word in the clue was RELAY – “a relay race against time” – which to me made the correct response obvious, given the timeframe involved, even without knowing of Cody’s association with the enterprise.

  2. John B./I. says:

Just happened to look at Wednesday’s contestants. Might be a close, tough game. A HS English teacher (he should know a lot about a wide range of things as a teacher) and a mathematician (those guys are no slouches either). So we might see an exciting, close game tomorrow. Today Jade really was not a factor at all. And Will almost made it a runaway. Had he bet more than just 1K at the 2 DDs….

  3. Richard Corliss says:

Jade couldn’t get things going today unfortunately.

  4. Albert says:

I thought this was a very simple and extremely easy FJ. I had the answer before I finished reading the question.

Also, one thing bothered me last week. “Justin Trudeau” was an answer, but the person only said “Trudeau” and was given credit. Since there was a Pierre Trudeau shouldn’t the players be required to specify both names? Sometimes Jeopardy enforces this rule and other times the show doesn’t enforce the rule. The show is very inconsistent with this, imo.

  5. John Christian Ambion says:

Well, a Triple Stumper off a very tough category. I guess that it will be “a race against time” if you don’t know what it is.

  6. Dal Higbee says:

I hope Will Dawson will be our first 5-time champion of 2019. We haven’t had one since October of 2018.

  7. John B./I. says:

As I said so often before you can always expect the unexpected with J!
Congratulations to Will for win #3, at least his answer was somewhat not THAT far off. This was imo one of the easiest FJ in a long time and yet…a complete bust!! Incredible.

    • Lou says:

Well as you said john this was easy though I don’t know why all three missed it. Surely these guys must have heard of the Pony express. Isn’t the Iditarod a snow dog sledding race up in the Yukon Territory? VJ I wonder if your kids had played the Yukon trail and took a gamble at the iditarod race where you have to select either the red or blue team and you get gold if you win.

      • John B./I. says:

        @Lou
        Yes, it’s entirely in Alaska.

      • VJ says:

@Lou, idk if my kids have ever heard of that race. If so, they didn’t share the knowledge with their dear mom.

@John, I hope Wil wins his 4th game, but when are you guys gonna start getting excited about the All Star Games that will begin in a few weeks? It’s coming a lot sooner than the next ToC.

Contestant John thought it was a riot when Alex said he looked like someone out of the Bible in the beginning of the show.

        • John B./I. says:

@VJ, Well he did sort of, didn’t he? Like a young Moses??? 😉 And all the disciples are depicted with long hair and mostly a beard.

        • VJ says:

yeah, I could see him being cast as an apostle in a biblical film

        • Richard Corliss says:

I am excited about the All Star Games except Matt Jackson and Alex Jacob.

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@John B./I. You’re right, expect the unexpected, getting a very tough category with a very tough clue inside of it. Besides, Will ran, I think, into the category of the LA Philharmonic.
