The Final Jeopardy question (2/27/2014), in the category “Landmarks” was:

From 1936 to 1987, the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power helped operate this facility in another state.

7-day champ Arthur Chu has amassed $180,000 and a spot in the Top 10 money makers of all time in regular Jeopardy! games. As he takes a shot at reaching $200K and 8 wins today, his opponents are: Claire Tuley, from Chattanooga, TN; and Chris Sanchez, from Chaparral, NM.

Arthur found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “5-Letter Words” under the $600 clue. He was in the lead with $5,400, $3,600 more than Claire in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE HOOVER DAM (BOULDER DAM)?

From SAH Archipedia: “The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), today the largest municipally owned utility in the nation, was one of two companies that operated power generators at Hoover Dam (the other was Southern California Edison). From 1936 to 1987, the Bureau of Reclamation contracted with the LADWP to run thirteen of Hoover Dam’s generating units to supply power to southern California, Arizona, and Nevada.”

Chris bet $1,798. He finished with $3,598.

Claire bet $2,000 finishing with $8,000.

Arthur didn’t take up the challenge to beat the $77,000 one-day record. He bet $14,000, giving him the win at $58,200, which still made it his best day. His 8-day total is $238,200.

The correct response was “what is the Hoover Dam Power Station”?
the Hoover Dam is not a facility

I can’t believe there is so much controversy regarding Chu. He is a smart player who uses gamesmanship in addition to his knowledge. I like his style. More power to him. BTW – why was there no outrage when Roger Craig did the same thing in the Tournament of Champions?

    • Tom Clark says:

      Oh, outrage THIS!

So you’re a sociopath, too — goody gumdrops for you. Sociopaths are a dime a dozen.

    • vj says:

I complained about Roger Craig all the time to my son in the TOC but I’m just not someone who is gonna go on twitter and write insult messages. It’s never the board jumping with me. I just hated it when Craig would buzz in and then figure out the answer.

    • Emily says:

Doug, I couldn’t agree with you more. Chu is an exciting player who is out to win. Last time I checked, either you win or lose on Jeopardy, so why not try to win big?

  3. Tom Clark says:

Oh, god, am I glad I started my Chu Free life today. I’d have really been miserable watching this episode.

Also, those have to be among the easiest Daily Doubles and Final Jeopardys in the history of this show!

I’d have to disagree, John. Arthur’s finding the Daily Doubles really isn’t dependent on luck; because he answers so many questions correctly, he frequently has control of the board. Statistically, he is far more likely to get the Daily Doubles.

    • john blahuta says:

yes, you are right. and that strategy is what gets so many people upset. i noticed yesterday though that they moved one or two dds up under the lower value clues. i wonder if that was coincidence? from his pov he is of course correct- as vj pointed out already- anything to win and mess up your opponents. after all, arthur is laughing all the way to the bank so far and couldn’t care less whether somebody – mostly his opponents- are upset or not. and he is after all playing for HIMSELF and not to entertain the general public or to submit to their whims. i just wish he were a little less arrogant. but i know that – if it works for me- i would play the same way.

  5. john blahuta says:

chris finishing with 1.600 and betting 1.798? i presume he finished with 1.800 ?
    (darn hawaii time difference….)
getting back to arthur: he made 20.400 with the dds alone…. so right now it’s a combo of luck (finding the dd) ,guts (betting big) and knowledge. we shall see when luck runs out how things will go from there.

    • vj says:

      yeah Chris finished with $1800.

I would say it’s luck (finding dd’s) + guts (betting big) + luck (getting easy clues). LOL. imo, the DDs and FJ today were almost insultingly easy.

PS – Oh, and let’s not forget buzzing in first. Arthur’s pretty good at that.

I must say, that if I was up against him, I would use the strategy I used to use to play my brother in chess. I could never beat him. I did not even want to play chess with him but he insisted so I would do everything in my power to mess him up. If I was able to achieve a stalemate, he would fly into a rage!

  6. john blahuta says:

it sure is a bummer from which you have to recover when an opponent wagers high on the first dd, gets it right and then adds to the lead while you are still stunned.
i have to admit, arthur’s strategy is working for him – so far.
i also have to admit: i stand corrected, big time with my prediction. 🙁
but no matter how obnoxious you may be,here is another admission- you don’t get where arthur is right now by being stupid.
a big bett will do him in one day….pride goes before the fall.
