Today’s Final Jeopardy question (2/21/2018) in the category “World War I” was:

Site of an arduous WWI campaign, this town on the Dardanelles gets its name from the Greek for “beautiful city”

5x champ Rob Worman went over the $100K mark yesterday by $13,899. In Game 6, he is up against these two players: Bryan Brzycki, from Indianapolis, IN; and Kristy Calman, from Louisville, KY.

Kristy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “You Know My Name” under the $400 clue, with 4 clues left after it. She was in second place with $2,600, $5,400 less than Rob’s lead. She made it a true Daily Double and she was RIGHT.

NEITHER contestant got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS GALLIPOLI?

There’s a little item on the Trove from The North Western Advocate and Emu Bay Times (a Tasmanian publication) that is dated 11/6/1915: “Certain writers, says ‘Le Figaro,’ in tracing back the history of the Crusades, state that the French landed at the Dardanelles and there established a camp, which subsequently became a town, and was known as the ‘Town of the French’ or ‘Town of the Gaulois.’ But Gallipoli is far previous to the Crusades, and was founded by tho Macedonians, who called it Kallipolis. ‘the beautiful town,’ which by a slight alteration has become Gallipoli.” It’s relevant to the clue not just for the name meaning, but it was published while the Gallipoli Campaign (4/25/1915-1/9/1916) was still ongoing.

Kristy didn’t have a response. She lost her $9,900 bet and had $100 left.

Rob didn’t have a response either. He wrote down “Hi, Davi” with a smiley face. He lost $1,599, winning the match with $20,001. His 6-day total is $133,900.

@timmeh, idk, this kind of thing bugs me too, as it seems so blatantly inconsistent but, upon reflection, perhaps it is okay when the extra word is actually in the song lyric right before the title like the “when I saw her standing there.” I remember another one where they accepted “goodbye, Ruby Tuesday.” Still, there probably is a rendition of “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime” where the singer throws in “hey.” Again, this is just speculation on my part.

@Rhonda, yes, I remember that clue where just Evers wasn’t accepted and we couldn’t understand why.

@Lou – the sides were the Allies vs the Ottoman Empire

Well I couldn’t get this one either but still though a win is a win. This is the second time that we had a newcomer contest out of the game, VJ. I’m glad Rob didn’t bet big although did he run a category today? The others couldn’t catch up to him. Which sides fought in the battle of Gallipoli ,VJ?

  3. rhonda says:

That was an incorrect answer, I thought after the break Alex would say something to that effect, not that it made a difference in the outcome of the game, but it was still a wrong answer.
I remember they had a question about Merlie Evers not all that long ago, and Alex wouldn’t accept Evers as correct, he wanted her first name as well. VJ, remember we spoke about that?

  4. Richard Corliss says:

Bryan Brzycki is the father of Krissy who was on December 2, 2014.

Krissy’s dad didn’t do very well today, Rob was unstoppable.

How does this work? Yesterday, John was called wrong on “Hey Brother Can You Spare a Dime.” Damien picked it up without the “Hey.”

Today Rob got an okay on “When I Saw Her Standing There” with Alex correcting the title to “I Saw Her Standing There”

  6. Nell says:

What can I say? I got nothing.

May I say I’m pleased that neither of them got it right?
