WHAT IS AVIGNON?

From National Geographic: “Built on the banks of the Rhone River, Avignon sprang to international prominence in the 14th century A.D. At the time, the town was not part of French territory, but belonged to the duke of Anjou, a vassal of the Pope. As such, Pope Clement V deemed it a safe location in which to center the Church.” A succession of popes resided in Avignon from 1309 to 1377. During that time, a stupendous Gothic palace was built and became home to seven popes. The palace was the property of the papacy until the French Revolution. Avignon’s historic center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, including the Popes’ Palace, the Episcopal Ensemble and Avignon Bridge.

Zoha wrote down Orleans (on the Loire River). She lost her $13,601 bet and finished with $1,999. That made Scott Plummer the new Jeopardy! champ.

I’ve a different take on this. I take this as a ‘parable’” that illustrates “advantage” or “privilege,” NOT necessarily UNFAIR.

Westerners like Scott and Jay seem to me to have advantage over Zoha who appears to have an Eastern or Middle-Eastern background. I would expect Westerners to know more about the papal estates than those with Eastern or Middle-Eastern background.

I totally zoned, and said “Rheims”, so, I was wrong. Ok. But, being a school boy French speaker, I was, at first, fine with Mayim saying “AH-vee-nyoh”, not “AH-vig-non”, but, with Zoha’s response, Orleans, I was incredulous that Mayim said “OR-leenz”, in place of “OR-lee-onh”. I mean, I just was dumbfounded. Maybe it was because of how she so clearly enunciated it, which showed me, at least, that she’s “all in”, even if on the wrong one!

Best game in ages tonight. All deserved to win. I’d much rather see a tight game than a blowout that’s over before the first commercial break.

  4. Louis says:

Glad that Jay and Scott got this final today. At least now all the daily doubles are nailed. Maybe Scott has a streak build up but we will see.

10 years of francais pour moi, starting in 4th grade. I’m still somewhat fluent, 50+ years later.
I got by pretty well when I visited Paris, Montreal and Quebec in the 70s.
But I blew the Final. Couldn’t decide between Lourdes and Orleans.
