Final Jeopardy: Plays (12-6-22)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/6/2022) in the category “Plays” was:
A 1609 story in which an exiled king of Bulgaria creates a sea palace with his magic may have inspired the plot of this play
21x champ Cris Pannullo, a customer success operations manager from Ocean City, NJ, has now won $748,286. In Game 22, his challengers are: Andy Tirrell, a political science and international relations professor from San Diego, CA; and Meghan Mello, an athletic trainer from North Smithfield, RI.
Round 1 Categories: The Surprisingly Successful League of Nations – Kids’ Book Titles in Latin – Wouldn’t It Be Rubbery – Radio, Radio – An “Arm” – A Lego
Cris found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “League of Nations” under the $800 clue on the first pick of the round. Nobody had any moolah. Cris bet the $1,000 allowance and he was RIGHT.
In 1925 the League headed off a Balkan War between Bulgaria & this neighbor to the south show
Cris finished in the lead with $7,600. Meghan was second with $4,200 and Andy was last with negative $1,000. All clues were shown.
Round 2 Categories: World Geography – Big Book Royalty – Animals – Blood, Sweat & Tears – Their Top 40 Debut Album – 7-Letter “W”ords
Cris found the first Daily Double in “Blood, Sweat, & Tears” under the $1,600 clue on the 7th pick. He was in the lead with $10,400, $4,600 more than Meghan in second place. Cris bet $6,600 and came up with iron. That was WRONG.
Blood, sweat & tears all contain this metallic element, the 6th-most abundant in the Earth’s crust show
Andy got the last Daily Double in “7 Letter ‘W’ords” under the $800 clue on the 17th pick of the round. In the lead with $7,400, he had $1,200 more than Cris in second place. Andy bet $3,700 and he was RIGHT.
Part of a famous quote, this word is on the upper left of Karl Marx’ gravestone show
Cris finished in the lead with $12,600. Andy was in second place with $11,900 and Meghan was last with $4,200. All clues were shown.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS THE TEMPEST?
An article on Shakespeare Comes Alive says the 1609 Antonio de Eslava story about the exiled Bulgarian king may have lent a few details to “The Tempest” but it’s obviously not a preferred source for the play. “The True Reportory of the Wracke and Redemption of Sir Thomas Gates”, a 1610 pamphlet, is proposed as the most likely source. The fact of the matter is that no one really knows what inspired “The Tempest”. Indeed, no one even knows for sure when it was written. The estimated time period given for that is 1610-1611.
More references: Shakespeare Online reprinted these articles: Henry Norman Hudson’s article in a 1909 edition of “The Tempest” appears to support the 1610 “Repertory” pamphlet; and the introduction written by William Allan Neilson in a 1914 edition of The Tempest found the Bulgarian king tale “a remote relative” of The Tempest’s theme.
Old Final Jeopardy! clues: “Shakespeare’s Plays” on 4-16-20 and “Islands” on 2-12-19 was about two of the other possible sources for “The Tempest”. (One was a triple stumper and one was a triple solve!)
Meghan had no idea so she wrote an “I had fun” message. With a zero bet, she remained at $4,200.
Andy got it right, even though a negative shake of his head showed he thought he was wrong. He bet $3,499 and finished with $15,399 .
Cris came up with “The Little Mermaid”. He lost $11,201 and finished with $1,399. That made Andy Tirrell the new Jeopardy! champion. So it’s arrivederci to Cris Pannullo until the next Tournament of Champions. We’ll be seeing Andy tomorrow.
2 triple stumpers from KIDS’ BOOK TITLES IN LATIN:
($600) Hop to it: “Fabella de Petro Cuniculo”
($1000) A French Fable: “Regulus”
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “Aviators”
Roland Garros, for whom the French open stadium is named, gained fame with the 460-mi. 1st solo flight across this body of water show

Andy’s early troubles gave me an inkling of his chops. I’ll be surprised if he wins tomorrow; the only way is if the other two contestants are relatively weaker. It seemed like he was quite fortunate to get the categories he did
I got the last 3 TS above. The poet one, I got from Jeopardy! itself! As for the Algonquin, I got that from “Alpha Flight” (you know, the Canadian X-Men) comic books from the 80s.
I thought FJ was easy, because I couldn’t think of anything else that would fit. As above, I’m surprised Cris didn’t get it.
As for the DD that Cris missed, I must admit I said the same thing. This is a bit ironic, because I went to med school with the grandson of the fellow who created Gatorade in the 60s at the University of Florida (yeah, Florida Gators – that’s why it’s not “Seminole Juice” from FSU or “Cane Ade” from U of M). He theorized that there should be something better than just water. Sweat is 1/4 tonic, which is why Gatorade has that taste that you can’t put your finger on – G’ade matches that tonicity, which is a lot weaker than 154mEq saline solution. And I did not know that sodium is #6 in the crust.
Aw shoot, all I could think of for FJ was “Camelot,” which of course is a musical, not exactly a play.
Not sure who’s in the mix for the next ToC, but Cris might be the early favorite.
Wow! Did not see that coming when the clue was revealed.
Among the categories I imagine Cris would have studied very closely over the years….Shakespeare. This clue didn’t appear to be of the highest difficulty, frankly.
Still shaking my head!
Shocker.
Then again, not his best game, overall, either.
But, a great run, nonetheless!
We’ll see ’em at the Tourney.
A tough FJ to be sure. Actually, I couldn’t help but notice Chris’ poker face before his response was revealed in FJ.
Noooooooooooooooooooooo😥
Cris definitely had a remarkable 21 game run over 2 months so he is now prepared for the next toc. Happy to see Andy winning today and he made a comeback in the later stages of double jeopardy
What an exciting finish! Cris and Andy were neck and neck in the final few clues of DJ! They were close to each other in score going into FJ! In the end Andy was the only to get FJ! correct while Cris didn’t and that means for the first time in over two months we have a new champion. Congrats to Andy Tirrell. After a lot of challengers failed to take down Cris, Andy was able to do that and helped him become the latest giant killer. Well we’re going to miss Cris Pannullo a lot but what a remarkable run he had.
