Final Jeopardy: Names in American History (12-5-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/5/2018) in the category “Names in American History” was:

In 1999 the U.S. Government was ordered to pay his family $16 million for less than 30 seconds of film

2x champ Dave Leffler, a retired police officer from Pittsburgh, PA, has won $53,601 so far. In Game 3, he takes on these two players: Amy David, a professor of management from Lafayette, IN; and Brian Panulla, a software engineer from Portland, OR.

Round 1 Categories: Reign, Dear – Dancer – Vixen – Comet – “Q”-pid – Rudolph

Dave found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Dancer” under the $400 clue on the 10th pick of the round. He was in the red at negative $200, $2,600 less than Brian in the lead. He bet $500 and he was RIGHT.

Praise be to Rudolf Nureyev & more recently Michael Flatley, who both had this noble nickname. show

Brian finished in the lead with $7,600. Dave was second with $5,900 and Amy was last with $3,000.

Round 2 Categories: Olympic City Attractions – 3-Letter Biz – Archaeology – It’s Just a Flesh Wound – My Role on TV – Ferry Tales

Dave found the first Daily Double in “3-Letter Biz” under the $800 clue on the second pick. He was in second place with $6,300 now, $1,300 less than Brian’s lead. He bet $3,200 and he was RIGHT.

In 1924 the computing-tabulating recording company got this name. show

Brian found the last Daily Double in “Ferry Tales” under the $1,600 clue with 8 clues left after it. In second place with $13,600, he had $5,900 less than Dave’s lead. He bet $7,000 and took a last second guess with Michener. That was WRONG. Ouch!

This author’s “The Sea-Wolf” opens with a ferry accident in San Francisco Bay. show

Dave finished in the lead with $21,500. Brian was next with $13,800 and Amy was in third place with $2,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS ABRAHAM ZAPRUDER?

The amateur footage that Abraham Zapruder took in Dealey Plaza on 11/22/1963 recorded the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Life Magazine bought the rights to the film and later sold it back to the Zapruder family. In 1997, the film became a permanent part of the National Archives’ Kennedy Collection and the Justice Department offered the Zapruder family one million for it. In 1999, a federal arbitration panel awarded the Zapruders $16 million. Read more about it on Mental Floss.

This is Zapruder’s second FJ, Here’s the first from 2001: FAMOUS FILMS: He made the first home movie to be named to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry

Amy wrote down her cat’s name, Katze Ball. She bet nothing so she remained at $2,600.

Brian got it right. He bet $7,701, bringing him up to $21,501.

Dave got it, too. He bet $6,101 and won the game with $27,601. His 3-day total is $81,201. Way to go, Dave!

Final Jeopardy (12/5/2018) Dave Leffler, Amy David, Brian Panulla

Reversal: COMET ($1000) A comet often has 2 tails: one made of dust and one that glows blue. It is made up of these electrically charged gas molecules — Dave got dinged for “plasma” and Brian got paid with “ion.” Dave got a correct ruling on it right after the chat.

A triple stumper from each round:

DANCER ($1000) In 1948 dancer & choreographer Alicia Alonso founded the National Ballet of this island country of her birth

OLYMPIC CITY ATTRACTIONS ($400) Ebenezer Baptist Church on Jackson St. NE

2 years ago: Only ONE of the players got this FJ in “Presidential Elections”

1 of 2 states whose first-ever electoral votes were cast for Woodrow Wilson. show

Did this episode along with tonight’s WOF episode get preempted in some markets for George HW Bush’s funeral?

    • John B./I. says:

Can’t speak for the mainland – although a lot of comments indicated at least a delay- but no preemption in HI due to the time difference. J is on at 4.30 PM and then it’s already 9:30 in the eastern time zone, so everything is/was already over. One of the advantages of being behind, timewise.

  2. klm says:

I have a question, please. On the reversal, why was Dave given $2000 when the highest dollar amount in the J round is $1000, and the clue wasn’t a DD either?

    • VJ says:

@klm, because when Alex didn’t accept his answer, he lost $1,000. So they had to give him that back, then another $1,000 for being right

  3. Richard says:

I think Dave is from Pittsburgh, Pa Not Pittsburg.

  4. John Christian Ambion says:

Brian tried to take the lead with his gutsy DD bet, unfortunately, it crashed out, leaving Dave winning in 3 games over $82,000 and officially knocked out Ali Hassan from ToC contention. Meanwhile, Ateneo wins AGAIN against a very uplifting UP to solidify themselves as back-to-back champions. I thought it would be a great game, but the dirty tricks prevailed over the stronger support. In the opinion of the many, Ateneo doesn’t deserve to win this, and I agree.

    • John B./I. says:

      @JCA
Yes, that 7K crash was a swing of 14K. Had he been right it would not only have put him ahead but won him the game, since he had FJ right as well. Tough for Brian, THE game winner for Dave.

    • HOWARD says:

I thought the Jack London DD was fairly easy, because he had a history in the Bay Area and of course wrote novels about nature and such. A $14000 (and likely more) error. Same amt, I believe, the guy made a couple weeks ago on the fairly easy Lake Pontchartrain DD that eventually cost him the win. It gave the champ her 3rd win, which enabled her to be on 5 shows.

      • VJ says:

Hi Howard, well, just this past October, they had a clue mentioning Buck and Jack London. All 3 players had a shot at it but no one knew it was “Call of the Wild” so I guess Jack London isn’t high on anyone’s study or reading list these days.

Anyway, tough break for Brian. He was really very good. Watching him play, I already figured he would know FJ and thought he might even win till he hit that snag.

  5. William Weyser says:

Amy is in 3rd place with $2,600.

  6. John B./I. says:

    PS
Sad irony that this FJ was aired on the day of President Bush’s funeral service.
He and Carter were voted out as sitting president. Bush’s bad luck was that Ross Perot was running and got almost 20 million votes or almost 19% . Had it not been for him, George H.W. would probably have won.
    Rest in peace, Sir!

  7. John B./I. says:

Well, no one saw that one coming. But with a TS Dave would have won anyway, had Brian even stayed put. So congratulations to Dave!! He is #13 now on the ToC, Ali is out and Dave even is ahead of Dave and Scott. A 4th win would probably put him on top of the 4 game winners.
So just when you think nobody will get it, you have 2 correct! Well, better this way than the other way around. Amy just couldn’t get any rhythm going and even a DD would not have helped her much.
So….boo-hiss to us, but Hooray Dave!!! Calm, cool, collected AND smart (this was a deduction clue) as well as having a wide area of knowledge.

  8. RT81 says:

    wtg Dave!

love to see him win 2 more and get in the TOC.

    • John B./I. says:

      @RT81
Maybe even 4 might do it, but I would not be surprised if he goes beyond 5. Maybe waaaay beyond!

  9. Lou says:

That 7000 dollar bet didn’t pay off for Brian in that daily double. But glad that he and Dave got final correct. But the judges need to pay careful attention when ruling out an alternative or accepted answer by the contestants. Amy couldn’t catch up to the guys today. But still the Kennedy assassination is a big huge coverage just like George H W Bush funeral. By the way VJ and John, what is one of your favorite lines in that jack London ferry book?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, a couple of years ago, I had a clue watch post on “The Sea-Wolf” that had some Jack London clues in it and the trailer of the Edward G. Robinson film. Too bad Brian didn’t see it. 🙂

    • John B./I. says:

      @ Lou
To my embarrassment I have to admit that I never read it. Something I’ll rectify, now that I have enough time on my hands and can do whatever and whenever I want. I got about 20 books lined up right now, I’ll add this one as well.
