Final Jeopardy: Royals (12-30-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/30/2014), in the category “Royals” was:

He was the last English monarch to die in battle.

2-day champ Vaughn Winchell has won $40,101 so far and everyone’s got their fingers crossed that he nails his 3rd game today. Well, not everyone! These new players want to take Vaughn down: Dan Eling, from Arlington, VA; and Marcia Kuipers, from Wayne, NJ.

Round 1: Dan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Winners” under the $800 clue. He was in second place with $2,400, $1,000 less than Vaughn’s lead. He bet $1,200 and he was RIGHT.

It was the first sequel to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. show

Dan finished in the lead with $5,800. Vaughn was second with $4,400 and Marcia was last with $4,200.

Upon returning from the commercial break, Dan was dinged for $800 for his reply to this $400 clue in “Ribbons”: “Pack your ribbons if you’re competing in this sport, an Olympic Medal event since 1984”. Dan said “rhythm gymnastics” but it was “rhythmic”. He was still in the lead with the $5,000 he had left.

Round 2: Marcia found the first Daily Double in “11-Letter Words” under the $1,200 clue. She was in third place with $9,000, $5,800 less than Vaughn’s lead. She bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT.

It’s the term for someone who collects pieces of eight, Venetian ducats or Confederate half-dollars. show

Vaughn found the last Daily Double in “Ladies Who Launch” under the $1,600 clue with one more clue left in the round. In the lead with $18,400, he had $5,200 more than Marcia in second place. Not about to put his lead at risk, he only bet $200. Good thing since he had no guess and he was WRONG.

Let’s be clear– it’s the last name of Shannon inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2014. show

Vaughn finished in the lead with $18,200. Marcia was next with $13,200 and Dan was in third place with $11,800.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS RICHARD III?

King Richard died at the Battle of Bosworth on 8/22/1485. He’s been in the news recently after forensic teams at the University of Leicester completed their examination of his remains, which were found under a car park in Leicester in 2012: “CT scans were used on his 500-year-old skeleton to help determine his injuries and the medieval weapons used…. The results of forensic analysis… show he had nine wounds to the skull and two to the postcranial skeleton. Researchers said three of these ‘had the potential to cause death quickly’.” (BBC News: King Richard III killed by blows to skull)

Dying in battle wasn’t his only last. He was also the last king of the House of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty.

Dan bet $11,798. He finished with $23,598.

Marcia bet $10,500 and finished with $23,700.

Vaughn bet $8,201 so he won the match with $26,401. Yup, our first 3x champ since Ryan Alley won his third game on Halloween (the “coincidental co-champs” game).

FJ Results: 12-30-14

Vaughn’s 3-day total is $66,502. As you can see from the scores, Dan and Marcia were excellent players. Great game!

2 years ago:: TWO of the players got this FJ in “19th Century America”

Held in 1857, America’s first national landscape design contest was for the creation of this place. show

going by the recap a good game or easy clues or both.
all 3 dd clues and the fj were rather easy.
i only read about 100 times about the godfather II, if you can pronounce the word numismatist the first time without twisting your tongue it was clear-lucid- who was the only u.s. woman to be on MIR (russian for both “peace” and “world”. and richard III?? “a horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse….)
also correct bets, so finally a perfect game it seems.(have not seen it yet, need to wait for the power to come back. kind of stormy here in lahaina and it blew over a few of the old wooden power poles. sometimes it’s like a 3rd world country here on maui… fortunately it still recorded before we went dark…)

Yeah, Vaughn. Finally a 3x champion. Good game again. So far this week very good players except for Ramona’s fj response yesterday. Hope the trend continues with good contestants. We are overdue as viewers.

Congratulations, Vaughn! You were able to do something that champions from Casey LaPlante to Brian Hamilton were unable to do and that is win 3 games and over $50,000. That is nice, but we still haven’t had a 5-timer this season, so I want you to go as far as you possibly can.

yeah, over 66K at the moment. if he wins tomorrow it would be at least a good ending for j this year. God knows we had enough problems….still have with the CoD.
congrats to vaughn, but it seems marcia and dan were no slouches either.
due to the triple solve – although easy- a total of over 73 K after fj and over 43 K before fj.

Vaughn deserves a whole box of Cyberial cigars for breaking the 2-day winner spell.

        A 3-day champ, a triple-solve, and 3 strong contestants – it can’t get any better than that!

And I’m not even brokenhearted that none of the contestants knew the name of the president of Brazil 🙂

obrigado,i nasceu em viena, austria, agora vivendo no Havai….e um mundo pequeno,de fato.! FELIZ ANO NOVO!!

    • john blahuta says:

triple amen to that, jacob!!! as you said, except for ramona 2 good games in a row. maybe the clues were not too tough either today, i’ll start it right now. power is back.
i guess, maybe j is easing with the clues as well up towards the end of the year as to not finish in a disaster? but then you still have to have a feel for the buzz-in time and finally no fj wagers where you wonder what they smoked before they placed their bets..:):):) that’s more like it.now if somebody would notice that the CoD is stuck and fixed it, we are all peachy.
