WHAT IS JUMBO?
Jumbo the Elephant was a male African bush elephant from Sudan, who was sold to P.T. Barnum in 1882 and became a “jumbo” attraction of Barnum’s show. According to Etymology Online, “jumbo” came to mean “very large, unusually large for its type,” because of the elephant’s size. P.T. Barnum claimed that the largest elephants he ever saw were “mere dwarfs by the side of Jumbo.” As an adjective, the word was first used in 1886 to describe cigars. According to the OED, prior to this, jumbo was in use as part of the phrase “mumbo jumbo”.
I was wondering what the Christmas connection to Jumbo was, if any. Apparently, he was born on or around Christmas Day in 1860. The train accident that claimed his life occurred on September 15, 1885 in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada.
Iris had no response. She lost $5,000 and had $2,000 left to add to Friday’s $2,400. She finished with $4,400.
Jason got it right. His $10,000 bet gave him $25,800 to add to Friday’s $16,200. He finished with $42,000.
Juveria had no response. She bet nothing so she had $19,600 plus Friday’s $51,200, for a grand total of $70,800. And, as you no doubt expected, Juveria won the whole shebang. She will appear next in the Season 39 Champions Wild Card tournament.
A triple stumper from each round:
SCIENCE & NATURE ($2000) Greek for “scaled” & “wing”, it’s the insect order that includes moths and butterflies
AGES, EPOCHS & ERAS ($1200) Last & longest of the 3 periods of the Mesozoic era

FJ came to me immediately.
Juveria might have a good chance. However, it seems almost onerous that, by winning this tourney, now, it’s another one! And THAT is to get to the TOC!
Yeah, the name was so famous that I had no idea of whom the animal was in FJ. Anyways, I chose ‘Steamy’ in reference to the train. On the bright side, it was a good game.
Merry Christmas VJ! Juveria certainly had a very festive holiday season by winning Group 1 of Second Chance.
