Final Jeopardy: Oscar-Winning Actresses (12-24-14)
The Final Jeopardy question (12/24/2014), in the category “Oscar-Winning Actresses” was:
With a total of 5 wins, they’re the only 2 Best Actress winners who were known professionally by the same last name.
New champ Avishai Gebler won $25,200 yesterday thanks to his familiarity with the Grinch. Today he takes on these two players: Brian Hamilton, from Sacramento, CA; and Becca Allred, from Orem, UT.
Round 1: Brian found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Turtles” under the $800 clue. He was in a second place tie with Avishai at $1,800, $2,800 less than Becca’s lead. He wanted to bet $2,000. After Alex delivered the news that he couldn’t, he bet the whole $1,800 and he was RIGHT.

Becca finished in the lead with $4,600. Brian was second with $4,200 and Avishai was last with $1,800.
Round 2: Brian found the first Daily Double in “Awards & Honors” under the $800 clue. Now Avishai and Becca were in a tie for the lead with $8,600 each, and Brian was $800 behind them at $7,800. He was looking for an even $10K, so he bet $2,200 and he was RIGHT.
The media coined the name “Genius Grant” for the Fellowships from this foundation named for John D. & Catherine T. show
Becca found the last Daily Double in “Play Settings” under the $1,600 clue. In the lead with $10,200, she had $200 more than Brian in second place. She bet $5,000 but could not come up with anything. She did say “Our Town” but it sounded like it was after the buzzer went off. Either way, it was WRONG.
This O’Neill drama: Act I begins at 8:30 a.m.; Act IV is set about 15 hours later. show
Brian finished in the lead with $12,000. Avishai was next with $10,600 and Becca was in third place with $7,600.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHO ARE KATHARINE HEPBURN AND AUDREY HEPBURN?
Audrey Hepburn was nominated for Best Actress 5 times, but the only time she won was for her first nomination, “Roman Holiday”, at the 26th Academy Awards.
Katharine Hepburn also won her first time out of the gate for 1933’s “Morning Glory”. She would go on to amass 11 more Best Actress nominations and 3 more wins in 1968, 1969 and 1982.
Becca just wrote down a “hi” meant for her Mom. She bet and lost everything.
Avishai had a bunch of questions marks. He lost his $5,000 bet and finished with $5,600.
Brian got it right. His $9,201 bet brought him up to $21,201. Congrats to Brian! He’ll be the champ in the Christmas Day game when Alex will wear a Santa suit. Not really. 😉 Just a little Christmas humor.
Brian is an attorney. During the chat, he told a story about a “prestigious” award he received when he was a reserve firefighter. It was the Annual Driving Award for whoever crashes or bumps into something with one of the units.
A very happy holiday to all those celebrating this evening and tomorrow. May Santa treat you right.
2 years ago:: BOTH players got this FJ in “Literary First Lines”
“You better not never tell nobody but God”, begins this 1982 novel, whose film version garnered 11 Oscar nominations. show

No Jeopardy here in NY tonight due to NBA games. Wish there were a way to see it, anyone know if it will be broadcast later on in the evening? I doubt tomorrow’s will be the missed one as the rest of the country will have already seen it tonight.
I thought Jeopardy contestants had to spell their answers correctly. Last night Brian spelled Katharine Hepburn’s name Katherine.
when the pronunciation does not change because of the spelling they usually accept it.
My thought for the day, brought on by “What is Rabbit?”:
Every game ever invented involves a strategy of knowing how to play it successfully.
One thing that is an absolute must with Jeopardy is that, in coming up with the question that fits the answer, one must tie the information given in the answer with the CATEGORY.
In fact, sometimes one can only come up with the correct question because one knows the category.
Even more: Sometimes one may not know the correct question, but can figure it out when thinking about the category.
So it should be second nature to think in two steps, every time: Given the (1) category and the (2) information in the answer, the correct question is …
And yet — do you realize how often contestants FORGET THE CATEGORY?
It’s a rare game where it doesn’t happen at least once.
And my point is, keeping the category in mind isn’t an ability for great Jeopardy players … it’s what you’re SUPPOSED to do! It’s not a sign of superior ability in the game — it’s a sign of minimal competence!
After all the years of watching the show and after the practice games they play, it should become second nature.
And yet: Time after time after time after time, in those categories with letters or syllables in quotation marks, so we know that all the answers begin with a certain letter or contain a certain syllable, one, two, or even all three contestants will ring in and give an answer that is obviously wrong, because it doesn’t fit the category.
And today we got Rabbit as one of Santa’s eight reindeer.
Yeah, I know. They get nervous. But the only job they have to do is play the game by its really simple rules, and if you get so nervous you can’t do that, maybe you shouldn’t go on. It’s exactly why I would never go on!
in my opinion your point is fundamental in every aspect of life!
Think that’s bad? We were just watching Family Feud and the question posed was name an occupation where you find a lot of neurotic people.
Both team leaders thought neurotic meant erotic so one said strippers and the other said porn stars. LOL.
Oh, no VJ – not Family Feud!
At least no one expects to watch intellectual giants at work on that show, LOL!
For a question under santa’s reindeer – 70s volkswagon renamed passat to this.
Avishai answered “Rabbit”. That really cracked me up.
He said “Calvary” instead of “CAVALRY” — should have been wrong
@ VJ and jacob
the jinx, the jinx….the HORROR!!
triple solves seem to be hard to come by these days. like your trifecta at the track the “sure” thing will be spoiled by 1 horse coming out of nowhere. some unbelievable throw by an outfielder turns the “sure”base into an out. somebody will come up with an unbelievable answer-or no answer at all and there we go again.
what this season has produced in fj justifies my life motto that i adopted when i was 16:” i believe it when i see it” it has proven to be correct too many times i could count in all walks of life.
NOTHING is impossible. improbable, unbelievable etc : YES.
but: there is ALWAYS a but :):)
even with cotestants who are smart, composed and what have you, strange things happen. i still can NOT believe that ken got ousted when he wrote down “what is FedEx” when even i knew after reading half the clue that it’s H.&R.Block…
ABC stations will see non-West COast preemptions of WHeel and J! tomorrow due to NBA coverage. CBS NBC and Fox have no afternoon or evening special programming scheduled tomorrow.
well, so much for the triple solve again… since they were actresses i thought maybe becca would get it.
but, yet another champion… they should rename the show after a song by the beatles,”(one) day tripper…”
correct bet and correct answer by the leader, also right with both dd clues. so i would say a deserved win all around. i wonder if brian will manage to stay around for more than today’s win? but for now: congratulations! it took me way more than 30 seconds to think of audrey first and then of course that was it, with katherine the more – you might say prolific – actress and a career that lasted 5 decades…
Merry Christmas to you too, John.
And also to everyone here.
feliz natal !!
That’s so adorable!
Obrigada!
I don’t believe no triple solve on this fj. I give up predicting. Thought for sure this would be a triple solve.
Agreed. Truly unbelievable. My thought process went like this — Let’s see, Katharine H won the most. Oh, yeah.
