Final Jeopardy: Baby Girl Names (12-23-15)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (12/23/2015) in the category “Baby Girl Names” was:

In 2014 it was No. 1 in Sweden and, thanks to an animated movie, in the Top 300 for U.S. baby girls for the first time in decades.

New champ Theresa Tejada won $21,599 in yesterday’s match with the only correct FJ answer. In her second game, her competitors are: Chandreyi Ghosh, from Atlanta, GA; and Joe Quackenbush, from Tampa, FL.

Round 1: Chandreyi found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Tech Company Names” under the $800 clue. She was in the lead with $3,800, $1,800 more than Joe in second place. She bet $1,600 and she was RIGHT.

Chandreyi finished in the lead with $25,200. Joe was next with $17,200 and Theresa was in third place with $5,600.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS ELSA?

In Sweden, Elsa has been a Top 10 baby girl name for years, and its move to No. 1 in 2014 was only up two spots from No. 3 the previous year.

In the USA, the name’s popularity rose dramatically due to the character in the Disney film “Frozen.” You can look up the popularity of any given name on the Social Security’s Baby Names page if you scroll down and choose the Popularity of a Name Tab. If you look up Elsa, you will find that the name jumped from No. 528 in 2013 to No. 286 in 2014, or you can click here to see a screen cap of that info.

Theresa got it right. She bet it all and finished with $11,200.

Joe thought it was Astrid. That cost him $10,000 and left him with $7,200.

Chandreyi also got it right. Her $9,201 bet gave her today’s winning total: a whopping $34,401. Great job, Chandreyi!!

FJ Results: 12-23-15

During the chat, Chandreyi told a funny story about her childhood in Germany in response to Alex noticing how comfortable she was with the “Found in Germany” category in Round 1. She wanted to see America so her parents took her to the Black Forest and told her it was America. This was the $600 clue in that category, which she got, of course: “Oak, beech & fir trees are in this forest region of Southwestern Germany that border Basel.”

“The American Tolkien” was what Time Magazine called this author with the same 2 middle initials as Tolkien. show

Another good match. Chandreyi was pretty awesome but Joe still did his best to get his score up.

More on Joe’s FJ answer: Astrid was No. 23 in Sweden in 2014 and No. 913 in the USA.

A good game and yay for the bets on the DD’s. Joe was good except that he handed the 2nd place to Theresa on a platter with his FJ bet.

Does Chandreyi speak with a foreign accent? I hope she sticks around a little while; she was quite impressive.

      • VJ says:

yeah she has a pretty strong accent and she’s pretty serious when she’s playing. I found the way she told her chat story charming. She said it was years before she realized she had been conned. LOL. Trebek laughed and said parents sometimes do that.

        • Cece says:

Yeah, that was a funny story. But I don’t think her accent is German, but maybe it’s just me.

Her answer “selling like hot potatoes” made me laugh because I still do that to some American expressions, and my bf is the worse, he not only botches them but also mix and matches and makes his own brand of expressions. It’s hilarious!

Yes, she has a marked Indian accent.
