Final Jeopardy: NYC TV (12-15-16)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/15/2016) in the category “NYC TV” was:

In 2010, in its fourth season, this TV show shifted its primary setting to 6th Avenue, 2 blocks west.

2x champ Cindy Stowell brought her winnings up to $31,000 yesterday. Today her opponents are: Sara Quashnie, from Livonia, MI; and Chelsea Cohen, from Astoria, NY.

Round 1 Categories: Odd Words – The Oscar Winner’s Movie – What’s the Big Rush? – Texas – Moving Journalism – Tails

Cindy found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Moving Journalism” under the $800 clue with 6 clues still to go. She was in a tie for the lead with Sara. They both had $3,000, $1,000 more than Chelsea in second place. She bet $1,500 and guessed Miller Lite. That was close but WRONG.

Sara finished in the lead with $5,600. Cindy was second with $2,900 and Chelsea was last with $1,400.

Round 2 Categories: The Oceans – European Rulers – 2016 Music Festivals – 5-“L”etter Words – To Live & Die in L.A. – Tales

Sara found the first Daily Double in “Tales” under the $800 clue on the 6th pick. She was in the lead with $7,600 at this point, $4,300 more than Cindy in second place. She bet $2,000 and said “Arabian Nights.” That was WRONG.

The title of this 9th century Arabic tale tells us it spanned about 3 3/4 years. show

Chelsea found the last Daily Double in “European Rulers” under the $1,600 clue on the 11th pick. In second place with $2,600, she had half of Sara’s lead. She bet $1,000 and she was RIGHT.

Sara finished in the lead with $11,600. Chelsea was next with $9,600 and Cindy was in third place with $5,300.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “MAD MEN”?

In “Public Relations,” the Season 4 premiere of “Mad Men,” the fictional headquarters of the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce agency moved to the Time & Life Building on 6th Avenue (The Avenue of the Americas). The year was 1964 and the building was only 5 years old. Gothamist has an article with some “Mad Men” tidbits and other things you may not know about the Time & Life Building, with video footage of Marilyn Monroe attending the building’s opening.

Cindy got it right. She bet $3,300 and that brought her up to $8,600.

Chelsea wrote down “How I Met Your Mother.” That cost her $2,500. She finished with $7,100.

Sara thought it was “30 Rock.” She lost $7,601, landing her in third place with $3,999. So Cindy won her third match and now has a 3-day total of $39,600.

Final Jeopardy (12/15/2016) Cindy Stowell, Chelsea Cohen, Sara Quashnie

So the one leading into FJ ends up in 3rd place, and 3rd place wins. Nice.

What’s the point of getting a DD and betting less than the face value of the clue?

JemRiffster, you got a point there, but the clue should have stated then “One of the titles…”

    • VJ says:

maybe “the numerical title”? If they said one of titles, they’d have to accept the one they wanted, Arabian Nights or 1001 Arabian Nights (which is what I would have said and idk if that would have been accepted now).

      • Cece says:

Yeah, I see your point… but if they had said “numerical title”, then they would be giving it away practically. And ‘Arabian Nights”, “Arabic” is already in the clue.

Hmm….[head scratch]. Okay, they should’ve just thrown out the clue. 🙂

Could have sworn I heard Chelsea say “Queen Beatrice” instead of “Beatrix.” She must not be familiar with Manhattan streets since she lives in Queens. I thought sure she would get fj with the Sixth Avenue 2 blocks west part since Madison Avenue is 2 blocks east of Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas). :-[

    • VJ says:

I’m pretty sure she did say Beatrice, Jacob, and it looked like Alex skipped a beat there, then got an OK from the judges.

I really thought that Sara would get a reversal on Arabian Nights, because it’s also called that.

      • jacob ska says:

VJ, you’re right about Sara. That was another one I thought would be reversed. Also “Automotive” vs. “Automobile” in AAA. Is there another AAA?

Didn’t like term “chicano” either. Found it offensive. The judges dug that one up from the dungeon.

        • jacob ska says:

Made me think of Trump using the word “hombre.” Clue writers need to be more sensitive of people’s ethnicity. What people call themselves and what other people call them are two different things. Wake up Jeopardy. It’s almost 2017.

      • JemRiffster says:

Re: Arabian Nights, the clue specified that the title refers to a length of time, so the correct response had to have the 1,001.

        • Renée Clegg says:

Yes, two and three quarter years is approximately 1001nights and that was the clue to the title they wanted.

    • rhonda says:

I also thought she said Beatrice and that her answer would be reversed. I wonder how that would have worked since the next clue was a DD?

  3. lou says:

Congrats to cindy on her third win. Vj do you know what year mad men first aired?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, IMDB says the first episode aired on 7/19/2007.

I liked that Odd Words category today. I put the whole thing up in the extra clues. There are 10. LINK

Then I went and looked for a sentence with hoplite in it and here’s what I found: “The fact that Socrates was a hoplite shows that he could afford to buy his own armor, which was expensive.” (on Google Books in “The Life and Times of Socrates”)

At least three. She got bits of luck again tonight with her opponents both missing FJ!, she also got bits of luck last night when both her opponents overwagered in FJ! from second and third place and it was a triple stumper.

  5. Richard Corliss says:

How many games did she win before she died?
