Final Jeopardy: U.S. Presidents (12-10-14)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/10/2014), in the category “U.S. Presidents” was:

The first man in the 20th c. to hold all 4 federally elected offices: Congressman, Senator, Vice-Pres & Pres.

New champ, Peter McGillicuddy won $15,400 in yesterday’s runaway game. In his second game, he is up against Travis Darling, from Norman, OK; and Mindy Miner, from Schenectady, NY.

Round 1: Peter found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “5, 5” under the $1,000 clue. He was in second place with $3,600, $1,400 less than Mindy’s lead. He bet $1,200 and did not have a guess so he was WRONG.

Mindy finished in the lead with $5,400. Travis was second with $3,000 and Peter was last with $2,400.

Round 2: Mindy found the first Daily Double in “Point ‘A’ to Point ‘B'” under the $1,200 clue. She was in the lead with $7,000 now, $2,400 more than Travis in second place. She bet $2,500 and it was right in her neck of the woods so she was RIGHT.

Travis found the last Daily Double in “21st Century Movie Quotes” under the $1,200 clue. He was in third place with $5,400, $7,700 less than Mindy’s lead. He bet $2,500 and he was RIGHT.

“Your final answer for 20 million rupees.” show

That second round made this the closest game we’ve seen in a while: Peter finished in the lead with $15,200. Mindy and Travis were in a tie at $13,500. Wow!

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS LYNDON B. JOHNSON?

In 1937, LBJ “campaigned successfully for the House of Representatives on a New Deal platform…. During World War II he served briefly in the Navy as a lieutenant commander, winning a Silver Star in the South Pacific. After six terms in the House, Johnson was elected to the Senate in 1948. In 1953, he became the youngest Minority Leader in Senate history, and the following year, when the Democrats won control, Majority Leader….

“In the 1960 campaign, Johnson, as John F. Kennedy’s running mate, was elected Vice President. On November 22, 1963, when Kennedy was assassinated, Johnson was sworn in as President.” (White House bio: LBJ)

FYI: Wikipedia has a list of prior occupations of all U.S. Presidents, sortable by previous experience.

Travis wrote down FDR. He bet and lost it all.

Mindy came up with Nixon (the second to match the clue). That cost her everything too.

Peter had Nixon too. He lost $11,801, but still won the game with the $3,399 he had left. He now has a two-day total of $18,799.

Over on the J Board they are posting that Mindy got the $2000 because she was leading going into DJ. I really don’t know the rules. I do remember Keith Williams saying on Final Wager some time ago that new rules were coming on J and there would be no more ties.

He might explain tonight’s scores whenever he posts his final wager youtube video.

    • jacobska says:

Well, Keith Williams posted his Final Wager video for the December 10, 2014 J game on youtube but did not discuss why Mindy got 2000.

However, he did discuss that on November 24, 2014 no more ties on J rules kicked in. Anyone interested can view it on youtube. I watch his videos after the games most of the time,

I think that it’s a rip off whenever 2 players are tied at the end. Both players should end up with the same money. Not 1 player getting $2000.00 and the other player getting $1000.00. They are tied, for heavens sake. Who ever is over this show should change it and give both contestants $2000.00 dollars and be fair about it or take the show off the airwave. All you are doing is showing people how to cheat.

When two players are tied after FJ! for second place, second place goes to whomever was leading after DJ!, if they’re tied after DJ!, is goes to whomever was leading after the first round, which was Mindy.

  4. VJ says:

@John and Marilyn — I think it goes by who had that score first. Just guessing. That’s how it’s always looked to me.

    • Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

I watched it again. Travis reached 13500 before Mindy did and both stayed at that score until FJ.

      • VJ says:

You’re right! Travis got to $13,500 on the Thomas More clue. Mindy got to that score a lot later in The Falcon category.

        There goes that theory!

        • john blahuta says:

maybe because she was at the second podium or they flipped a coin?? or maybe she had better scores in the tryouts= that’s why she got the #2 podium = so if all tiebreakers are the same she is ahead??

      • VJ says:

Here’s a new theory, though this one doesn’t even sound fair: the one who was ahead at the end of the first round

        • Cece says:

I think Alex owes it to the Jeopardy fans to explain it tomorrow.

        • VJ says:

Well, I think Travis should get a GREAT GAME shout out whether Alex explains or it or not.

Mindy had $13,100 to his $4,600 when the game kicked into gear for him and she still had that when he got to $13,500. Peter, too. At that point, he only had $6,000. Nice work, guys!

  5. Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

Since Mindy and Travis were tied before FJ and both had 0 after FJ, how was it decided who was in second place?

  6. john blahuta says:

just curious, maybe alex will explain it when i watch the show: why did mindy get the 2 K??

  7. john blahuta says:

I HATE AOL:!! it took out a paragraph before” not exactly”. i was writing something like:
i have not seen the show yet, but obviously the players did well in regular play. in fj..not so much. american history/politics … some presidents were eliminated by the clue automatically, so i thought at least one would come up with lbj…

so i am somewhat surprised AND disappointed.

    • VJ says:

I was disappointed, too. Thought Peter would get it.

I guess the players were all disappointed, too — that they didn’t bet zero.

  8. john blahuta says:

boy, all the additional clues there could have been:
lbj was the first president in the twentieth century:

to be sworn in after his predecessor was assassinated
the first to be sworn in in texas, his home state
the first to be sworn in on a plane (Air Force 1)
the first to be sworn in by a female judge
the first president who took office in the middle of a war.

not exactly – although during the regular game the players did obviously well (have not seen the show yet) – a display of american history/politics.

lbj was the president sworn in under the most dramatic circumstances in the 20th century. and a LOT of firsts…

    • jacobska says:

@John, did you see on CotD where I asked you if Nixon might be mentioned? Had no idea his name would be mentioned twice.

For some reason LBJ’s accomplishments do not get the credit they deserve. He was well accomplished as a politician prior to becoming even VP. It’s not as if Texas is a small state after all. Weird!

      • VJ says:

the Vietnam War is the reason

        • john blahuta says:

well, he decided not to run for re-election (he could have since he served less than half of jfk’s term. the reason was supposedly …vietnam.

        • john blahuta says:

and nixon jumped at vietnam like a hungry wolf. he was for putting stronger forces into indochina when dick was still vp under ike. ike and de gaulle warned jfk, but he did not listen. maybe it was also already too late. that we were to committed and would have “lost face” had we withdrawn.

    • Tom Clark says:

Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in after his predecessor was assassinated in 1901, technically the first year of the 20th century, so he beat LBJ to that by 62 years.

      • Marilyn Ahrenhoerster says:

But he was never a Congressman or a Senator so he doesn’t fit the criteria..

        • Tom Clark says:

This comment calls for an “argh.”

If you’d stop and think for a minute before rushing to condemn, you’d realize that my comment on a comment didn’t have a damn thing to do with the FJ.

Now fit THIS into your criteria!

        • VJ says:

Oh c’mon. The comment was not a condemnation by any stretch. Just an easily remedied misunderstanding. No hostility necessary.

      • VJ says:

Tom is referring to this part of John’s comment —

to be sworn in after his predecessor was assassinated
