Final Jeopardy: Postage Stamps (12-1-25)

The Final Jeopardy question (12/1/2025) in the category “Postage Stamps” was:

A 1959 4-cent stamp depicts an eagle & a maple leaf beneath the name of this project

14x champ Harrison Whitaker, a researcher orig. from Terre Haute, IN, finished the month of November 2025 with $373,999. In Game 15, he’s up against: Brendan Thomas, a historian from Fayetteville, AR; and Libby Jones, a recruiter from Davenport, FL.

Round 1 Categories: State Dept No-Gos – Television – A Stack of “Lee” – Get Some Rest – Plenty of Fluids – A Sick Day

Harrison found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Get Some Rest” under the $800 clue on the first pick of the round. All scores were zero. Harrison bet the $1,000 allowance and thought it could be doldrums. That was WRONG.

Latin for “gap” or “yawn”, it can be a break in work, often for TV productions over summer show

Harrison finished in the lead with $6,600. Libby was second with $3,000 and Brendan was last with $2,800. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: A Boatload of Trouble – Plays by Characters – Hodgepodge – Geographic Film Titles – A Course of Horses – Timely Words

Brendan found the first Daily Double in “Geographic Film Titles” under the $1,200 clue on the first pick. The scores were the same as above. Brendan made it a true Daily Double and he had one word WRONG.

It’s the only James Bond film with a country in the title show

Libby got the last Daily Double in “Boatload of Trouble” under the $1,600 clue on the 11th pick. In second place with $9,400, she had $1,200 less than Harrison’s lead. Libby bet $3,000 and she was RIGHT, and in the lead much to Ken’s amazement.

An 1898 Court of Inquiry said it was “unable to obtain evidence fixing the responsibility for the destruction of” this show

Harrison finished in the lead with $21,000. Libby was next with $17,200 and Brendan was in third place with $3,600. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE ST. LAWRENCE SEAWAY?

The National Postal Museum notes that the 1959 St. Lawrence Seaway Issue 4¢ stamp was issued on June 26th to commemorate the official opening of the Seaway, attended by Queen Elizabeth II and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The Seaway began construction in 1954 and has been called a 20th century engineering marvel. A 20¢ stamp was issued on June 26, 1984, the 25th anniversary of the opening.

Canada also had a 5¢ stamp commemorating the project. A printing error resulted in some inverted stamps. The 5¢ St. Lawrence Seaway invert error single is the first stamp shown in this ’12 Rarest Canadian Stamps’ YouTube. One fetched $13,500 at auction in 2015.

Brendan got it right. He bet $3,599 and finished with $7,199.

Libby got it right, too. She bet $7,601 and finished with $24,801.

Harrison came up with the Ambassador Bridge. He lost $13,401 and finished with $7,599. That made Libby Jones the new Jeopardy! champ. So we say pip pip cheerio to Harrison and good show to Libby. We’ll be looking forward to seeing her second game tomorrow.

  1. Jason says:

I was 3/3 on DD but missed FJ. That’s a little embarrassing, because I grew up on Lake Erie!

The quebracho clue I missed, but I know the tree! In English, it is “axe breaker”!

  2. Howard says:

A lot to say here. What a shocking turn of events! Libby stood silent until after the first break, then came on strong. I could see her out-buzzing Harrison repeatedly, till he rallied himself. Brendan goofed a couple of times, first by saying “Cambridge” in the “Lee” category, then by flubbing the 2nd DD.

I cannot remember how long it’s been since I thought all 3 DDs and Final were cinches. I was super-surprised when Harrison showed the “gap” in his overall knowledge on that first DD. I collected stamps as a kid and am certain I have that stamp that was in Final.

Only 2 of 3 contestants got that creampuff Final from 2 years ago? (1936 novel).
The motor oil and South American acid stumpers were somewhat gettable.

    • VJ says:

Yeah, that doldrums response was a real headscratcher. Perhaps they don’t use the same expression that we do in Merry Olde England for that, or maybe the yawn part of the clue gave him pause.

      • VJ says:

P.S. Missing DDs has never seemed to hurt Harrison though. In fact, I believe he proved he didn’t need the DDs to win several times.

  3. Rick says:

Libby eventually came from behind, and became the new Jeopardy champ. Congratulations Libby! Well, I rather underperformed a tad during the game, but snared another freebie fin FJ.

  4. Kevin Cheng says:

December started off with a huge upset. Libby was close behind Harrison when she got Final correct and Harrison didn’t but what an amazing run Harrison had. We’ll look forward to seeing Harrison again in the 2027 Tournament of Champions. Congratulations to Libby to becoming the new giant killer and being able to do what many people weren’t able to do and that is defeat Harrison.

  5. VJ says:

Well, I guess we’ll have to see if Ron Lalonde wins enough games to play against Harrison in the ToC.

    • Richard Walls Corliss says:

I don’t know, VJ. Something tells me that Harrison will easily win the next Tournament of Champions next season.
