WHO IS CORMAC McCARTHY?

“The Road” (2006) is a post-apocalyptic novel about a father and son who are among the survivors of a catastophe that has pretty much destroyed the world. At about 3:40 in the above video, Cormac McCarthy tells Oprah Winfrey how he was inspired to write “The Road” while his son John was sleeping during a 2003 trip to El Paso: “I just had this image of what this town might look like in 50 or 100 years… this image of these fires up on the hill and everything being laid waste and I thought a lot about my little boy.” He wrote a couple of pages in his notebook and later realized that this was a book he had to finish. “The Road” won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2007. Viggo Mortensen starred in the 2009 film adaptation with a screenplay written by Joe Penhall.

Maureen didn’t have a response. She didn’t bet anything, standing pat on $600.

Tyler got it right. He didn’t bet anything either for a $7,000 finish.

Amy also got it right. She bet $64 and won the game with $19,664. Amy advances to the finals. Maureen and Tyler go home with $10,000 each.

  1. Howard says:

Guessed right on FJ because that’s the first author I could think of with a connection to Texas (“No Country for Old Men”). Then I thought it might be the “Lonesome Dove” author (McMurtry) but couldn’t think of his name in time.

Only stumpers I knew were the city in the Dobbs case and the name of the black SC justice. She’s so recent that they all should have known her.

  2. Jason says:

Wow, did Maureen look like she got outclassed in this game. That was something for her to say that, herself, though. So, good on her.

I think Matt was just goofing around in the exhibition, so, it will be something to see if he steamrolls over the other two tomorrow. Likewise, on Friday, I certainly hope that Eric and Andrew have what it takes to beat you know who.

  3. VJ says:

Way more triple stumpers than I thought there would be! One of the ones I got was the one about The Bells. That part is about the brazen bells.

    • Rick says:

Yes, but on the other hand, those triple stumpers weren’t exactly a piece of cake either. One of the Jeopardy answers was something in Italian, and I managed to get the question (Spaghetti Western) before Amy responded (and she is obviously quick on the draw).

  4. Louis says:

Amy was pretty dominant in this game after that warm up march yesterday. I can say for sure she has a very good chance in the finals. Good game by Tyler as well.

  5. Richard Corliss says:

    And then there were 7.
