Final Jeopardy: Country Names (11-4-20)
Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/4/2020) in the category “Country Names” was:
5 U.N. member countries have one-syllable names: Chad, Laos, & these 3 in Europe
New champ, Devin Rossiter, an academic coach from Bakersfield, CA, has now won $25,405. In Game 2, he is up against: Keoni Rodriguez, an undergrad at Stanford from San Diego, CA; and Paloma Thombley, an HR director from San Francisco, CA.
Round 1 Categories: Clues Across the Smithsonian – U.S. Islands – Add an E – Automaker for the People – Animated TV – the Hole Truth
Devin found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “U.S. Islands” under the $400 clue on the 7th pick of the round. He was in third place with $400, $1,200 less than Keoni’s lead. He bet $1,000 and he was RIGHT.
A tourist spot, Maryland’s Kent Island is the largest island in this body of water. show
Devin finished in the lead with $6,600. Keoni was second with $4,600 and Paloma was last with $800. The $1,000 clue in “Automaker” stayed on the board.
Round 2 Categories: Anthropology – Seeing Red – An(imal)agrams – Here’s the Play – It’s Gonna Be Close… – He’s Out!
Devin found the first Daily Double in “Here’s the Play” under the $1,600 clue on the 4th pick. He was in the lead with $8,600 now, $4,800 more than Keoni in second place. He bet $800 but didn’t have a clue so he was WRONG.
Kevin Bacon was not in this “numeric” play in 1990 but you could go trace his connections to Courtney B. Vance and Stockard Channing. show
Keoni got the last Daily Double in “Anthropology” under the $800 clue, with 4 clues left after it. In second place with $11,400, he had $2,000 less than Devin’s lead. Confident in the category, he bet a big $7,000 and he was RIGHT.
Ruth Benedict analyzed this country in her classic book “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword” show
Keoni finished in the lead with $18,400. Devin was next with $13,400 and Paloma was in third place with $3,600. 4 clues worth $5,200 went uncovered.
Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT ARE FRANCE, SPAIN & GREECE?
Today’s response is self-explanatory, in English, at least. If we were playing French Jeopardy!, we’d end up with France, Grèce, Malte, Suède and Suisse. It appears that only Chad and Lao work in Spanish. I can’t tackle Greece’s list, although they do have a second column in English. I did find out that their country’s name is 3-syllables in their own language: “Ελλάδα” pronounced “Elláda”
Paloma got France & Spain but drew a blank on Greece. She lost her $3,500 bet and had $100 left.
Devin got it right. He bet $13,399 and that brought him up to $26,799.
Keoni had the same response as Paloma. He lost $10,000 and landed in second place with $8,400. That made Devin a 2-day champ with $52,204 to his credit.
A triple stumper from each round:
U.S. ISLANDS ($1000) In a famous annual event, ponies swim from Assateague Island to this state’s nearby Chincoteague
HERE’S THE PLAY ($400) In this 1955 play Brick tells Maggie, “I don’t want to lean on your shoulder, I want my crutch!”
2 years ago: TWO of the players got this FJ in “1960s Films”
Chocolate syrup, casaba melon & Playboy model Marli Renfro were enlisted to create an iconic scene in this film. show

This episode in my Virginia area aired on November 5th.
This situation reminds me of an episode that aired shortly before I was born. Lee Karjala was in the lead with $9,600. Bill Cash was in 2nd place with $9,400, and returning champion: Barb Cornell was in 3rd place with $7,200. The category was “The Winter Olympics”, and the clue was “The last 2 US Men to win the single’s gold medal in figure skating, in 1984 & 1988”. Barb only wrote down “Who are Scott-?”, and ran out of time to add the last name. She wagered $2,800, and that left her with $4,400. Bill wrote down “Who are Boitano and Hamilton?” Scott Hamilton was the 1984 Figure Skating Champion, and Brian Boitano was the 1988 Figure Skating Champion. Because Bill got it all in, that was correct, and he wagered $9,290, which took him all the way up to $18,690. So, it was up to Lee, who wrote down “Who is Hamilton?”, and he was unable to come up with Brian Boitano, and he went for the lockout. So, Bill Cash won with a lot of cash: $18,690, and that was his only win.
Yes. I thought of all 3 countries before the FJ music ended, but probably couldn’t have written them all down completely , and that quickly! Its a little easier at home than being there in person.
For sure, Anne! No pressure at home and nothing at stake, except pride 🤣
Devin looks very impressive after winning today despite not knowing the DD play. I am fully confident he could get a streak running like Kevin Walsh or Sam Kavanaugh did. Keoni had a good lead until final jeopardy and threw his chances of being a new champion away, VJ. I thought this clue should have came to Devin’s opponents? Were they planning to think of Turkey?
Devin didn’t lose that much on that DD, Lou, so that was a smart bet by him. That was kind of a pressure cooker FJ! with very little think time to still be able to write the three countries. I do Sporcle geography quizzes a lot so that helped me. Still I’m sure a lot of people got it, though it might have taken more than 30 seconds for some. That’s likely what happened to Keoni and Paloma.
VJ didn’t Alex tell the contestants they would have to write fast or something along those lines?
He did, Jacob! He said, “Players, you’re going to have to work quickly”
I wonder if he suggested that they just ask for 2 out of the 3 but was told that would make it too easy.
