Final Jeopardy: U.S. History (11-30-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (11/30/2015) in the category “U.S. History” was:

It’s the only odd-numbered year in which a U.S. Presidential election has been held.

Current champ Rob Russell has a 2-day total of $43,600. Today he goes for a third win against these two players: Joyce Hshieh, from Chicago, IL; and Elaine Baker, from Garland, TX.

Round 1: Elaine found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Photography” under the $1,200 clue. She was in the lead with $1,200, $200 more than Joyce in second place. She bet $300 and didn’t know. She took a shot with iPhone but that was WRONG.

Elaine finished in the lead with $2,900. Christine was right behind her with $2,800 and Rob was last with $1,800.

Round 2: Joyce found the first Daily Double in “Physicists” under the $1,600 clue. She was now in the lead with $4,400, $1,500 more than Elaine in second place. She bet $2,000 and thought it was Kelvin. That was WRONG.

Rob found the last Daily Double in “Words that Should Rhyme” under the $1,600 clue. In second place with $4,600, he had $200 less than Joyce’s lead. He bet $2,000 but his pronunciation of the second word was rejected so he was WRONG.

Joyce finished in the lead with $4,800. Elaine was next with $4,100 and Rob was in third place with $3,000.

Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS 1789?

“In 1789, the first presidential election, George Washington was unanimously elected president of the United States. With 69 electoral votes, Washington won the support of each participating elector. No other president since has come into office with a universal mandate to lead….” (Mt. Vernon.org)

Rob wrote down 1797 but crossed that out and put down 1787. He bet everything but a dollar so that’s all he had left.

Elaine came up with 1841. She only bet $301 so she finished with $3,399.

Joyce got it right. She bet $3,401 so she won the match with $8,201, and we’ll be seeing this new Jeopardy! champ tomorrow.

During the chat, Joyce told Alex Trebek about how she transformed her house into Hogwarts for a party. She elaborated on how elaborate the transformation was and Trebek asked her to invite him to her next party. She said okay.

The only tree that has FOILAGE is an aluminum Christmas Tree. LOL

    • VJ says:

Not really, you can find a lot of examples of foilage as opposed to foliage in old poetry.

“And leaning there on those balusters, high
Above the empurpled champaign, drank the gale
That blown about the foilage underneath”
from The Princess by Alfred, Lord Tennyson

from Word Nerd (2007) — foliage was first spelled foilage

38/52 here. $4800 as the leading total going into FJ! is one of the lowest since November 2001 when the clue values became what they are now. I think there’s one or two games with the leader having less at most. Yesterday is also the 11th anniversary of J-archive.com’s beginning

Please, Aa, be careful about the words you use on this web site. As a watcher of the show, you must know thousands and thousands of more accurate and polite words. [Good “Jeopardy” category: words to use instead of foul ones and which mean roughly the same thing but are not euphemisms.] Thanks! And congratulations again to Joyce Hshieh.

    Follige is perfect southern pronunciation.
What a racist f–k Trebek and all the NYT reading f-faces at Jeopardy are. God how I detest them.

As stated in Mt. Vernon.org, the election actually began December 15, 1788 (an even year) and ended January 10, 1789 (an odd year). It was a matter of getting together the electors. Some states still didn’t make it, but we finally got our 1st President.

I hated to be the bearer of bad news, but I have these bad news to share.
    1. In my opinion, this is the WORST JEOPARDY! EPISODE of the season.
Case In Point: Everyone failing to say ”What is One Last Kiss?” and Rob’s mispronounciation of the word FOLIAGE by putting the letters I and L in the wrong places.
    2. If Rob doubles up, he’ll have $6,000, added to his 2-day total of $43,600, that would give him a total of $49,600, and that means that by $400, he would have to miss out on the 12th spot in my 6th version of the JEOPARDY ! Tournament Of Champions

  7. A. Soble says:

Joyce H. (an actress), winner on Monday 11/30/15, seemed to be intolerably nervous in front of an audience while her brains and memory were tested. I’m sure many spectators “felt sorry” for her. She won primarily because no one (especially Rob, the >$40k 2-day genius) racked up any points in this contest. (Mr. Trebek wasted too many interstitial seconds.) I wonder what Joyce is like on the stage. Is she ready for Broadway? Lady Macbeth? Ariel the Mermaid? Alvy Singer’s last wife? No matter. I was proud of her (being a shy one myself, still, at more than twice her age). So, to Joyce: congratulations and good luck tomorrow!

  8. VJ says:

Wow, it was almost like Trebek jinxed Rob in the beginning of the game. He said:

“As impressive as Rob has been in his two previous appearances on Jeopardy!, there’s no guarantee that he will be equally good today, because as those of you who watch us on a regular basis know, an important determining factor is the categories. You hit your categories, your subjects, you’re gonna do better and I say that as encouragement to our newcomers ….”

It wasn’t much help to them either though in trying to get above $5K !!

    • Cece says:

Trebek could have said a prayer in the beginning, asked for a moment of silence, invoked the Jeopardy gods—nothing could have helped this game. 🙂

      • VJ says:

LOL, Cece. Less bad guessing probably would have helped a lot.

        • Cece says:

True, but I think they would’ve replaced the bad guessing with standing & staring.

I feel bad though for Rob on that DD’s pronunciation; maybe that’s the way they say it where he comes from. And Joyce’s nervousness during the game nearly culminated with a heart attack when she won.

        • VJ says:

yeah, I felt for Rob, too. That’s why I didn’t say he mispronounced it in the recap.

Wow, it reminded me of my oldest daughter and her 2nd grade teacher from the South who taught the kids about deciduous trees. She came home saying “de-sid-ee-us” trees and I said it’s “de-si-joo-us.” The teacher insisted it was her way. Then she had a Spanish woman teaching her French who said daughter was pronounced “fee-je.” I said it was just “fee” She told her teacher and the teacher said “Let your mamma teach you French, then.” LOL

Down here, they say Stuyvesant in a completely different way than up north. My youngest came home when they were learning about Peter Stuyvesant totally confused. Up north, her grandmother lived off an avenue named Stuyvesant so she knew that a long time before ever hearing about old Peter.

11 years ago, the Final J! moment was exhilarating. This year on Nov. 30, not so much.
