Final Jeopardy: Actresses (11-27-18)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/27/2018) in the category “Actresses” was:

In 1997 she became the first to win an Oscar for a film directed by her husband; her brother-in-law produced the film

New champ Dylan Hamilton, a pediatric dentist from Durham, NC, won $9,199 yesterday. In Game 2, he is up against: Carol Radlo, a family practice physician, from Sammamish, WA; and Myra Guideng, a wine club concierge from Seattle, WA.

Alex Trebek opened the show with his pet peeve about contestant board-hopping that he talked about in a recent interview with Vulture, offering this advice to today’s players: “It is better to start slowly and then build towards Final Jeopardy! rather than the other way around.”

Round 1 Categories: Many Moons – The Writer Speaks – Trophy Hunter – Sports Stuff – Navy Jargon – Hold the Homophone

Dylan found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Sports Stuff” under the $600 clue on the 13th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $3,200, $2,600 more than Carol in second place. He made it a true Daily Double and he was RIGHT.

Mike Pence called this 1986 hoops movie “the greatest sports film” & screened it on Air Force 2 using his own copy. show

Dylan finished in the lead with $10,000. Carol was second with $3,000 and Myra was last with $1,400.

Round 2 Categories: Language – Familial Music – Travel & Tourism – That’s the Name – Bridge Burners – First “in”, Last “Out”

Carol found the first Daily Double in “Language” under the $1,200 clue on the 4th pick. She was in second place with $4,200 at this point, $5,800 less than Dylan’s lead. She bet $2,000 and she was RIGHT.

Myra found the last Daily Double in “That’s the Name” under the $1,200 clue on the 14th pick. In third place with $6,200, she had half of Dylan’s lead. She bet $2,200 and took a shot with Joseph. That was WRONG.

From Greek, this male first name means “messiah-bearer” show

Dylan finished in the lead with $17,600. Carol was next with $9,400 and Myra was in third place with $2,800.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHO IS FRANCES McDORMAND?

“Fargo” (1996) was written, produced and directed by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan. Frances McDormand, one of the film’s stars, has been Joel Coen’s wife since 1984. She won the Best Actress Oscar in 1997 for her role as Brainerd Chief of Police Marge Gunderson. The Coen brothers also picked up the Best Writing Oscar (Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen). Joel Coen was individually nominated as Best Director but lost to Anthony Minghella (“The English Patient”). The film was also nominated for Best Picture, which would have been picked up by Ethan Coen, but “The English Patient” won that, too.

A 2000 clue: MOVIE DEBUTS ($1000) The folks in Fargo know she married Joel Coen, who directed her first film, “Blood Simple”

Myra was going for Julia Roberts. She bet and lost it all.

Carol went with Angelina Jolie. That cost her $3,500, leaving her with $5,900.

Dylan wrote down “Coppola.” He only lost $1,201 so he won this game with $16,399. His 2-day total is $25,598.

Final Jeopardy (11/27/2018) Dylan Hamilton, Carol Radlo, Myra Guideng

A triple stumper from each round:

THE WRITER SPEAKS ($1000) This “Space Odyssey” author: “I predict that a new species could well appear on earth–what I call robo sapiens”

BRIDGE BURNERS ($1200) At San Jacinto Sam Houston burned Vince’s Bridge, making this fleeing Mexican general easy to capture

Hey VJ, hope all is well with you and family.

Anyway, the aforementioned movie made me think of a post you did 2 years or so ago, about Buscemi/Colbert’s spoof on Kasich. On our opinion on the movie, you, me, Rhonda and Eric were divided 50/50. I was team Lapin—no like it 🙂

    • VJ says:

Cece! So great to hear from you. We are all doing okay and hope everything is well with you, too.

Jeez, I forgot all about that funny skit but you’re right, we were split 50/50 on liking the film.

      • Cece says:

I found the discussion about the book between Colbert and Buscemi hilarious. And in the skit, I hadn’t noticed before that there’s a poster of Face/Off [shudder] on the wall of Blockbuster.

In case any of the residents who are living in the New England area, Tonight’s episode of Jeopardy was moved to 7pm on WBZ-TV to make room for the live Fanueil hall special at 7:30pm

And also, Tonight’s episode of Wheel will air in the late night slot right after The Late Late Show just so you know.

Then why did they skip the ToC? Mark my words: After all 3 game winners are “gone”, the next ToC will be announced. Not a second earlier. THAT is not far fetched imo. The idea that something might not be 100% on the up and up IS far fetched, but NOT impossible. As I said, I hope I’m wrong.

    • VJ says:

Oh, for heaven’s sake, John. Since they decided to go with the All Star Games, what does it matter why they skipped the ToC, although not having enough 5x winners was likely a factor.

But you hang on to that thought if it makes you happy. Meantime, it seems to me that they are going to get tons more viewers to tune in and oodles more publicity by bringing back all the popular players they have lined up for the All Star Games than they will when they do schedule the next ToC

  4. John Christian Ambion says:

You would expect that it is a Triple Stumper because the clue here was tough. Anyway, he won just a little, so I think the only safe bet of going to ToC is to win 4 games or more.

  5. Lou says:

Still though this was a pretty good game despite myra couldn’t get much going. Dylan’s low bets reminded me of Seth Wilson and his game play style but I am quite surprised that no one watched Fargo or heard for mcdormand. Also VJ do you know if mcdormand had won awards for other movies other than Fargo and if there are any memorable moments you remember from this movie?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, she’s won a lot of awards for some other roles– 3 Billboards and Olive Kitteridge, I’m sure, off the top of my head.

idk about him winning 4 games. He’s not the one who had the right FJ answer yesterday. Both games had a lot of triple stumpers and that doesn’t bode well when the competition in the ToC is stiff.

        @VJ
True. Sorry about the right response. Still, if he ends up in the lead again like today……I am not 100% sold on the randomness of categories.. J is desperately trying to get all 3 game winners out. Yesterday and today Dylan had a DD, made it a true one and was right.Practically won him the 2 games. I am not accusing J of anything, but you remember the $64.000 question and Twenty-One. And nobody knows in advance where the DDs are. They can pull them out of the hat. Why not show the location in advance just to the TV audience? That would eliminate any speculation about manipulation.I know, you’ll be outraged about even THINKING anything MIGHT be wrong at J, still….
And J knows pretty much everything about you, where your weaknesses are, strengths, hobbies etc etc. You have to give them more info than on an application for the CIA. I sure hope I’m wrong. Any fix at J, no matter how subtle, would be the scandal of 2 centuries.

        • VJ says:

@John, I don’t know where you get these ideas or why you think that the show is “desperately trying to get all 3 game winners out.” That is just so far-fetched.

Why in the world would they be when they will be having the All Star Games in a few months?

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
She won just this year for “Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri”, another “Best Actress” award.

    • Phil says:

@Lou, I don’t understand why you would assume that the players had not watched Fargo nor heard of Frances McDomand. I saw the movie and am a fan of Frances McDomand, yet I would not have correctly responded in 30 seconds.

  6. John B./I. says:

Congrats to Dylan for winning #2.
That TS in FJ was pretty much what most expected. For whatever reason, for all her accomplishments McDormand is not that well known. And “Actresses” or “Oscars” as it turned out to really be (and throw in the relationships “Husband” and “BiL”) is a pretty tough category to begin with.
Strange bet by Carol. She covered Myra but even with a TS she had no chance of winning . She had to bet everything, be right and Dylan wrong to win.
Even if Carol had been right, Dylan would have won today. Go figure.
If my hunch is right then Dylan will be winning 4 games or more, eliminating Ali by virtue of games won. Moneywise Dylan is kind of low, he won less yesterday with his right response than today. Not quite 12.800 average, Ali has 22.600 and change per game (3).
3 pretty difficult FJs back to back. The last “easy “one was last Thu (ET) . Ironically even that yielded only one correct response. I wonder what’s on tab tomorrow?

  7. aaaa says:

$12,200 in Triple Stumpers here, a savvy wager would have won the game on the FJ! triple stumper

    • John B./I. says:

Dylan would have won anyway, because of the TS since he was in the lead and did not wager more than necessary to cover Carol. Had he bet a bundle….different story. But the category is difficult to begin with. I don’t think either player was comfy with it.

  8. Richard Corliss says:

    Very funny.
