WHAT IS “OUR AMERICAN COUSIN”?
You can browse some REALLY old editions of the Washington Evening Star on Chronicling America, a Library of Congress subdomain. On Page 3 of the 1/12/1864 edition, in the first column under the heading “Local News”, you will find the specific mention of “Tom Taylor’s dashing comedy, entitled ‘Our American Cousin'”, that played “to a full and delighted house” at Ford’s Theatre the previous evening. This was the last performance of the play’s run that time around, as evidenced by the front page blurb mentioning Mrs. D.P. Bowers’ 1/13/1864 performance in “Lady of Lyons”.
The following year, on April 14, 1865, during the last performance of “Our American Cousin” at the same location, John Wilkes Booth sneaked into the Presidential Box and murdered President Abraham Lincoln. The assassin shot Lincoln in the head while the audience howled with laughter at a particularly funny scene. The laughter quickly turned to shock as Booth leaped onto the stage shouting “Sic semper tyrannis.” It was the last performance of “Our American Cousin” anywhere for a long time.
Sam came up with Dickens’ “Our Mutual Friend”. He bet and lost his whole $8,000.
Andrew got it right. He added $2,801 to his score and finished with $17,001.
Amy also got it right. She bet $13,000 and won the game with $28,600. That also gave her that coveted third checkmark, making Amy the $250,000 grand prize winner of the 2022 Tournament of Champions. Andrew won $100,000 and Sam won $50,000.
A triple stumper from each round:
FILMS BY TAGLINE ($800) 1986: “The first casualty of war is innocence”

So, Andrew’s misstep becomes his undoing. In the PJ category, which any J! player knows needs two responses, Andrew’s giving only the last name was $1600, while he was only $1400 behind Amy in final.
Still, a relatively chippy match. I should have gone to bed, but just had to watch it!
Speaking of Abe Lincoln, his wife Anne Todd Lincoln was a real dog. Just look her up on Google.
Albert, His wife’s name was Mary and FYI, Lincoln was no matinee idol in the looks department. Mary had money and social respectability so we could say Abe was a golddigger and a social climber.
You’re the first person whom I encountered to say that, but she did appear to be lovelier in the movies (aka ‘Young Mr. Lincoln’ 1939).
Assassination of Lincoln was April 14 , 1865 not 1864 as stated in the final jeopardy answer “Our American Cousin”
Given the context of the clues, it wouldn’t have likely been ‘Our Mutual Friend’ by Charles Dickens which was actually a novel rather than a play. In fact, ‘Our Mutual Friend’ (which Sam picked) was a considerably lesser rated novel than any of Dicken’s earlier works. However, kudos to Sam for getting the era right at least.
Terrific game to end a great tournament, even with only one of the three super-champs in the mix.
I knew the final, but my only hesitation was that the date in the clue was 15 months before Lincoln was shot. “Sic semper tyrannis!”
The millionaire returning champion Amy Schneider wins the tournament!!! New regular Jeopardy shows continue tomorrow, along with the 11-day champion Cris Pannullo.
How could Sam have missed ‘Our American Cousin’ as the year 1864 was just about a dead giveaway? I mean, that was an especially well known play, and of course, a historic one.
Congrats to Amy on winning the tournament of champions! This was a great game with her, Andrew and Sam. A well played tournament this year
