NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS THE CHERRY?

The cherry was official designated the official fruit of the District of Columbia in September of 2006 because of the “I cannot tell a lie” George Washington tale when he confessed to his father that he chopped down the cherry tree, and because of the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, commemorating the City of Tokyo’s gift of 3,000 in 1912. Read the whole law here.

A 2010 clue: TREES COMPANY ($200) Parson Weems’ 1806 biography of George Washington included the story of chopping down one of these trees

Emma wrote down “that was fun!” She lost today’s all-in bet and finished with the $19,000 from yesterday.

Maya thought it was an apple. She lost $7,800, leaving her with $2,600 to add to yesterday’s $7,800. Her 2-day total was $10,400.

Claire tried an apple, too, even though she added “idk!” She also wrote “I heart you all! Thank you so much! She didn’t bet anything so her 2-day total was $38,200. ($16,400 plus $21,800).

Claire gets the $100,000 grand prize. Emma gets $50,000 and Maya, $25,000. Well done, teens!

Who would have thought! I got bogged down in trying to decide if a cherry was a fruit or a berry. It seems that it is both. Then I thought that the cranberry would be another logical response. After all, cranberries grow in bogs, otherwise called swamps where I come from.

Congratulations to all three of these highly intelligent young ladies. I trust that they are smart enough not to fall off the deep end, like so many do, and someday they will be able to celebrate their post-graduate degrees in whatever field of endeavor they choose.

Those people in the audience are Emma and Claire’s parents and Maya’s parents and her little brother.

    Congratulations, Claire Sattler!

Wowie. The 2018 Jeopardy! Teen Tournament ended on a Triple Stumper. I hope you all had fun in the Jeopardy! Teen Tournament, and I commend the performances of all 15 brightest teens, especially the three young lady finalists.

  5. Lou says:

I read the story of young George Washington cutting down the cherry tree although he did ask for punishment later if this really happened in history VJ or John?

Congrats to Claire on her win even though we ended the tournament with the easiest final jeopardy. I m certain the kids must have read about George Washington and studied history on him previously. This was a great tournament so tomorrow let’s see. What mary Ann can do to win big again

    • VJ says:

@Lou, yeah, I don’t think they even teach kids that story anymore. It’s considered a fable. I still never thought that FJ could possibly go less than 2 because of the annual festival. I thought some of the clues in this game were pretty tough for the players

      • sarae says:

If it’s considered a fable, why did you mention it as part of the reason they made it the official fruit? Because Trebek brought it up?

        • VJ says:

no, sarae, the story about the cherry tree is actually mentioned in the law that I linked to: “(b) Washington, D.C. is named in honor of our first president, George Washington, who is symbolically associated with the cherry… “

    • John Christian Ambion says:

@Lou Mary Ann needs to win a HUGE payday in order to be in the ToC. She needs to be prepared.

      • John B./I. says:

Currently she has 53.400, so she needs 13.403 to replace Erik as # 15, 15.002 to overtake Scott and become #12 overall. But the safer way would be to win 4 or 5 games, regardless of the amount won. I believe winning 4 games making 50.000 beats winning 3 games with proceeds of 70.000…..

    • John B./I. says:

      @Lou
Agree with VJ. Never happened. Sounds good, but….this guy invented all kind of stories.

First I was tempted to write “no comment”. BUT:
    1. The most deserving player won.
    2. It was a runaway for Claire.
    3. She got all FJs except today.
    4. She won both finals.
In part a mistake -sort of- by the law makers in D.C.. The cherry trees in D.C. are for ornamental purposes. The blooming is just breathtaking in what is otherwise a slob of concrete. The cherry itself is not fit for human consumption (unless you carry a big bottle of the other pink stuff…)🙄🙄Birds-maybe,humans: rather not. But what other – fruit bearing – trees are there in D.C.? Not many I would guess….
If CA, WA or even OR would have the cherry as state fruit, now that would be logical.
So all in all at least the best player – imo – won. Too bad that the last game had to end with a TS and in a whimper.SO CONGRATULATIONS TO CLAIRE !!!!

  7. Richard Corliss says:

Oh, Claire, I am so proud. You couldn’t be caught today.
