Today’s Final Jeopardy question (11/19/2018) in the category “American Writers” was:

Emma Arnold, a junior from Owing Mills, MD; Claire Sattler, a senior from Bonita Springs, FL; and Maya Wright, a senior from Peachtree City, GA, are the 3 finalists competing in the 2-day final of the 2018 Teen Tournament today and tomorrow.
The scores from today will be carried over and added to the scores in tomorrow’s game to determine who will win the $100,000 grand prize.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
This incident in Thoreau’s life became more widely known after John Pipkin published a book in 2009 called “Woodsburner,” which imagines the impact that setting this accidental fire had on the life of Thoreau, the great nature-lover. Indeed, years later, Thoreau wrote in his diary about the fire and how he was taunted for quite a while afterwards. The damage was estimated at $2,000 in the local paper but Thoreau did not feel it was his fault. In fact, he felt that he had more right to feel grieved at the damages as he “had a deeper interest in the woods” and “knew them better” than the owners. Read more about it on the Massachusetts History blog.
An old clue: NICKNAMES ($1200): This writer was known affectionately as “The Concord Rebel” & “The Poet Naturalist”
Maya thought it was Emerson (of “Concord Hymn” fame). She lost her $5,000 bet and finished with $7,800.
Emma got it right. Her $3,400 bet brought her up to $19,000.
Claire got it right, too. She bet $3,200 to finish with $21,800, so Claire will go into tomorrow’s game with a slight lead over Emma and Maya has some catching up to do.
Reversal: NOT-SO-ANCIENT HISTORY ($800) The Y2K bug scared the world in the 1990s because many feared computers would read the year 2000 as this year – Maya’s gained $1,6000 when her response of “00” was accepted by the judges. They were originally looking for 1900.
This was the only triple stumper I saw in the whole game:
NOT-SO-ANCIENT HISTORY ($1600) In 1992, 8 years after it hosted the Winter Olympics, this Bosnian capital was shelled by Yugoslav forces

I’ll take back my prediction of a Shakespeare Final Jeopardy question because it was a category today. But still no Geography question, so I’m guessing tomorrow is Geography, probably World Geography.
Well, it was a TREMENDOUS game from start to finish in Day 1, I hope it will repeat again in Day 2 with a high-scoring affair. As I said before the 2-day final, it’s going to be a CLOSE climax. After the TT, Mary Ann will try to knock Erik Agard OUT with her 2-day total of over $53,000. If she’s watching, she would see a very tight race.
Who knows, maybe Maya could pull a comeback, but both Emma and Claire got the upper hand and it’s going to be a photo finish. Don’t miss it, folks.
@VJ &JJ
Congrats, and also to the 3 ladies.Too bad Maya struck out. Should be an exciting game 2 tomorrow. Good game today too it seems. My migraines are killing me today. Back to bed.
@John B./I. Struck out? That’s an understatement, but I hope it will end the TT on a high-scoring affair tomorrow.
@J C A
What would you call it? Had she been right she would be at 17.800 and first and last would only be 4K apart.Besides, it has happened before that the last after day 1 won the tournament, all kind of different Ts.You never know.
John B./I. We’ll see about that. It’s going to be an EPIC nail-biting finale.
At this point we can only say good luck to the contestants tomorrow as they continue to battle it out for the grand prize. Emerson wasn’t a bad guess but I wonder VJ and John what drove Thoreau set most of his own prized possessions on fire though and did He replace most of the stuff that was singed in the blaze?
@Lou, he didn’t set fire to any of his stuff. He was trying to cook some fish by the pond and the dry grass caught on fire.
I’m hoping Maya can catch up too. I would like to see whoever ends up in 3rd place make more than the $25K minimum.

@VJ It will.
Who is more prestigious, Thoreau or Emerson? Is it like comparing Lennon and McCartney?
I guess it’s a matter of opinion or taste, Albert. I don’t care for Thoreau or Emerson myself. However, I don’t think you can compare them to Lennon and McCartney who were around the same age. Emerson was over a decade older than Thoreau.
