The Final Jeopardy question (10/30/2015) in the category “Colleges & Universities” was:
Founded in 1873, it was endowed by and named for the richest man in America.
2x champ Nikki Grillos has won $30,802 so far. Today her opponents are: Katie Walker, from Chapel Hill, NC; and Justin Morales, from Omaha, NE.
Round 1: Nikki found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Chemical Element Spelling” under the $400 clue before the first break. She was in second place with $600, $400 less than Justin’s lead. She bet the $1,000 allowance and she was RIGHT.

Round 2: Katie found the first Daily Double in “Quotations in American History” under the $1,200 clue. She was now in second place with $4,800, $1,000 less than Nikki’s lead. She bet $1,000 only and she was RIGHT.
The Gettysburg Address: “Government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not” do this. show
Katie found the last Daily Double in “Costumes at the Metropolitan Opera” under the $2,000 clue, a video category that featured Alex Trebek in opera costumes (Jeopardy! will no doubt feature this category so expect to see it in the weekly recap). Katie was now in the lead with $5,000 and had $400 more than Nikki in second place. She bet $1,000 again and she was RIGHT.
The Imperial Commissioner is the one who reads the marriage agreement of Cho-Cho-San and Lt. Pinkerton in Act I of this opera. show
Nikki finished in the lead with $6,200. Katie was next with $6,000 and Justin was in third place with $1,800.
NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.
WHAT IS VANDERBILT UNIVERSITY?
Cornelius Vanderbilt was considered the richest man in America in 1873, according to Wikipedia’s chronological list of richest American’s in history.
Vanderbilt University dedicates a page to its founder that says: “Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt was in his 79th year when he decided to make the gift that founded Vanderbilt University in the spring of 1873….” The statue of Vanderbilt shown on that page was the work of Giuseppe Moretti. This Boston Evening Transcript article (5/28/1897) says the Vanderbilts found it “a perfect likeness of the old commodore in his prime….”
Justin thought it was Carnegie Mellon. He lost his $1,698 bet, finishing with $102.
Katie had “Carnegie Univ.” She bet– you guessed it — $1,000, so she finished with $5,000.
Nikki also had Carnegie Mellon. That cost her $5,801 and left her with $399. It also cost her the title. Katie Walker won the match and she will be the returning champ on Monday.
As you can see, Katie had a sling on her left arm and told Alex in the beginning of the show that she broke her elbow. During the chat, she talked about the crime scene that is constructed outside her classroom, allowing her students to learn about forensics, anatomy, physiology and pathology.

btw, it’s Mischief Night — apparently, just in New Jersey, although I did not even know that until my DIL showed me this NJ.com article.
I also lived in Texas for about 3 years before I realized that they don’t have lightning bugs here. (I found out about the Taylor Ham right away though).
The article says ” A night, typically, young unsupervised juveniles go around…”
You probably lived in an area with OLD JUVENILES, so you never experienced the mischief.
@Cece, I grew up in NJ and lived there far longer than I have lived in TX. So, yes, I experienced the mischief as a child and because of that, as an adult, I never let my kids go out on Mischief Night. I did have my house egged a few times as an adult. Oh and then there was the soap. ha ha ha. The unsupervised juveniles use it to write things on homes and cars.
Yesterday my daughter told her TX-hubby not to let Venom (the cat) out because it was Mischief Night and he had never heard of it.
I was making fun of the writer’s “young juveniles” bit—the redundancy struck me as funny. :):)
I liked the Chemical Element Spelling category- fun! Justin was somewhat like Damien yesterday, except that he kept himself out of the hole.
Alex’s costumes were a riot, but Mephistopheles, oh yes!
Thought one of them would get it..
Lil hard to know all those universities back then.
I had to check out the Cornelius page to see if Corny was one of the nicknames. It’s not but Vanderbilt and Cornelius “Chevy” Chase are on there.
Btw, congrats vj on your Carnegie prediction. You get a triple congrats. Who would have guessed all 3 contestants would come up with Carnegie. Wild!!!
thanks, Jacob, but I predicted one would get it right and one wouldn’t even give an answer. No way would I have thought all 3 would say that.
44/58 here. Paris Themmen, Mike Teevee from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (played Mike Teevee in the 1971 original version), is Nikki’s spouse, as she said in the contestant interviews. Paris was a contestant on Trivial Pursuit on Family Channel in Summer 1993 and on Duel on ABC primetime in 2008
Excellent betting strategy by Katie!
Anderson Cooper, CNN, must be surprised that no one came up with his maternal great, great, great grandfather Cornelius Vanderbilt
yes, he must be floored. Anderson is such a self-important snob. LOL!
As we all know Gloria Vanderbilt is Anderson’s mom. The Vanderbilt heirs ran through Cornelius’ s money through the generations. One of the few things left to show he existed is Vanderbilt University. Be careful about leaving money to heirs.
Bill and Melinda Gates already said they won’t which is why they have their Foundation so the money go to worthy causes. Smart thinking.
One more week till the Tournament of Champions.
I hope the Jackson guy doesn’t win $250,000
