Final Jeopardy: Africa (10-29-15)

The Final Jeopardy question (10/29/2015) in the category “Africa” was:

On the Horn of Africa, it’s the only country whose name in English begins with a silent letter.

New champ Nikki Grillos won $14,801 yesterday. Today she is up against these two players: Julie Staple, from La Grange Park, IL; and Damien Martin, from Overland Park, KS.

Round 1: Julie found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Art” under the $400 clue. She was in second place with $1,000, $1,600 less than Nikki’s lead. She bet it all and came up with “imbroglio.” That was WRONG.

Nikki finished in the lead with $5,800. Julie was second with $800 and Damien never got out of the hole. He was at negative $1,400.

Round 2: Damien got the first Daily Double in “New Mexico” on his very first pick by choosing the $2,000 clue. So the scores were the same as above. All he could bet was $2,000, the face value of the clue. He did but could only come up with the Colorado. That was WRONG.

Nikki found the last Daily Double in “What’s Your Movie Number” under the $800 clue. In the lead with $9,800, she had $9,000 more than Julie in second place. She bet $1,200 and she was RIGHT.

Nikki finished in the lead with $15,000 but it was not a runaway. Julie caught up enough to prevent that, finishing with $8,000. Damien managed to get out of the hole once, only to go right back in it and finish at negative $1,000. He was the automatic third prize winner and was now out of the game.

Only ONE of two left in Final Jeopardy! got it right. Trebek mentioned that Damien was now sitting in the audience and wrote his answer down immediately.

WHAT IS DJIBOUTI?

The little video is just to show you what’s going on over there these days. You can look on Wikipedia’s Djibouti page if you’re curious to see how the country’s name is spelled in other languages. It doesn’t have a silent letter in some. Here are a few: French: Djibouti; Somali: Jabuuti; Afar: Gabuuti; Italian: Gibuti; German: Dschibuti; Polish: Dżibuti; Afrikaans: Djiboeti.

Julie came up with the Ivory Coast. She bet and lost it all.

Nikki got it right. She bet $1,001 so her winning total for today was $16,001. Her 2-day total is $30,801.
FJ Results: 10-29-15

During the chat, Nikki talked about “Schmutz”, the theater group she started with some college friends. After explaining its setup, Trebek declared it “Amateursville.” Nikki gracefully noted that they had launched a few careers.

Congrats Nikki. Good knowledge on Africa. Djbouti was a clue on Jeopardy last year and had its own catagory a few years ago on Jeopardy. With its prominence in the news you definitely studied.

EEK! That’s just rough for Damien. Either way, Julie! Nice comeback at the end, and I mean NICE! Good job for another win Nikki, you could be a last-minute! I’ll be waiting for the J-Archive post of the recap so I can see the scores.
