Final Jeopardy: Famous Families (10-26-23)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/26/2023) in the category “Famous Families” was:

In 2020 a former U.S. ambassador to Ireland, the last of 9 siblings in this dynastic family, died at 92

The Champions Wild Card quarter-finals continue today with these three champs: Yoshie Hill; a program support specialist from Colma, CA, Mason Maggio, a songwriter from Los Angeles, CA; and Tony Freitas, a director of product engineering from Claremont, CA.

Round 1 Categories: Science & Technology – Mob Hits – Take the “A” Training – Map Happy – The Camera Man – Fashion Statements

Tony found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Science & Technology” under the $1,000 clue on the 17th pick of the round. He was in second place with $2,800, $1,400 less than Mason’s lead. Tony made it a true Daily Double and took a shot at it with Margaret Mead. That was WRONG.

This biologist first gained acclaim for writing in 1937 with her article, “Undersea” in the “Atlantic Monthly” show

Mason finished in the lead with $9,600. Tony was in second place with $2,800. Yoshie was last with $1,200. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: Books & Authors – Hall of Famer by Position – Jacques of All Trades – Let’s Go Lobstering – “House” – Of Representatives

Yoshie found the first Daily Double in “Books & Authors” under the $1,200 clue on the 4th pick of the round. She was in last place with $2,000, $8,000 less than Mason’s lead. Yoshie made it a true Daily Double but had no idea so she was WRONG.

To Ian McEwan, there is no redemption, no amends, no this, the title of his novel made into a 2007 movie with Saoirse Ronan show

Mason got the last Daily Double in “Of Representatives” under the $1,600 clue on the 13th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $14,000, $13,200 more than Tony in second place. Mason bet $6,000 but couldn’t come up with anything in time so he was WRONG.

The only Speaker of the House to become President was this Tennessee representative and 11th President show

Mason finished in the lead with $7,600. Yoshie and Tony were tied for second with $5,600. After the break, Tony’s score was adjusted to reflect a reversal (see below). That put him in last place with $2,400. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS KENNEDY?

Joseph Kennedy, Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy had 9 children between 1917 and 1932. In order of birth, they were: Joseph Jr., John Fitzgerald, Rose Marie, Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, Robert, Jean and Edward. The 2 most famous children were John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK), 35th U.S. President and Robert (RFK), his Attorney General, who were both assassinated. Brother Edward “Ted” Kennedy was a Senator. From 1993 until 1998, Jean Kennedy Smith was U.S. Ambassador to Ireland, the birthplace of Kennedy and Fitzgerald ancestors.

There’s a table on Rose Kennedy’s Wikipedia page with more details on each of her offspring. You might notice that RFK and his wife, Ethel, had 11 children, beating Joe Sr. and Rose by two!

Tony got it right. He bet it all and finished with $4,800.

Yoshie also got it and she bet it all, doubling her score to $11,200

Mason came up with Carnegie. He lost $3,601 and finished with $3,999. That made Yoshie Hill the winner and a semi-finalst.

Final Jeopardy (10/26/2023) Yoshie Hill, Mason Maggio, Tony Freitas

  1. Richard Walls Corliss says:

Montgoflier is what Tony changed the phonetics of the word, Montgolfier. IIRC, he transposed the “F” and the “L”.

  2. William says:

Mason looks just like Hank Scorpio (from the Simpsons, back in the day).

  3. Jason says:

Oh, and, one thing I wanted to say, but forgot. Tony reminded me SO much of Hume Cronyn! I mean, but, really!!

  4. Howard says:

Missed just over half the show, so partly dependent on the recap. When I came in, Yoshie had but $400, Tony had maybe a couple thou, and Mason was on his way to a runaway with $7200.

Those DDs were difficult but not impossible. Figured out the “Underwater” one quickly. Knew the 2nd began with “A”: but blanked. Good movie. And Presidents is one of those categories every contestant has to master, along with Shakespeare, Capitals and Royalty.

Pretty lame that no one knew Joliet’s partner, or those last 4 Hall of Famers. A great opportunity for a sports fan to run a category with clueless opponents. The Gumper was one of the last at his position to play without a mask. The tax bill committee was a tough one but I knew it. The other stumpers were very difficult.

  5. VJ says:

I disagree that Ralph Cifaretto was “whacked” on the Sopranos. At least to me, “whacked” means the death was a “hit”. Ralph Cifaretto was murdered by Tony during a fight the two of them got in over a horse. Tony also killed his own cousin, Tony Blundetto. There was a hit out on Blundetto but Tony did it so the NY mob couldn’t torture his cousin.

  6. Ismael Gomez says:

The DDs were not nice to anybody resulted our third skunking. I hope William Weyser will say darn those daily doubles.

    • William Weyser says:

The main 1 I’m saying that to is Mason Maggio. If only he got his Daily Double, he would have been just fine. Instead, Mason struck out again, and Yoshie Hill moves on to the Semi-Finals. Oh, and Yoshie was the champion entering Alex Trebek’s last ever episode.

  7. Kevin Cheng says:

In today’s interview, Yoshie talked about being on stage for Alex Trebek’s last show. I was absolutely shocked about her story about being on Alex Trebek’s final show. It was an emotional story. She won Wednesday and Thursday but lost on Alex’s last show as a host before passing away. Congrats to Yoshie on advancing to the semifinals.

    • Jason says:

That tax bill committee reminded me of a champion from 5 or 7 years ago that was Canadian, and had a clue that was that committee, and the champ blurted out “what is the department of (blank)?”, and then said, “I’m Canadian”. I thought, you’re on a US game show, and, “When in Rome, do what the Romans do”. Not an excuse!

Things were rolling along in the J! round, but seemed to slow down in the second. I also thought Mason was going to do it.

I instinctively said “Kennedy”, but then wavered to Rockefeller, but then said, “Wait – 9 kids? Kennedy”. I always think of Joe dying in WWII, and how they mutilated Rosemary.

Yoshie doesn’t strike me as the strongest.
