Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/23/2023) in the category “Music Man” was:

Before creating this record label in 1959, its founder worked on a Lincoln-Mercury assembly line

The Champions Wild Card quarter-finals continue today with these three champs: Isaac Applebaum, a corporate development analyst from Mountain View, CA, Pasquale Palumbo, a financial advisor from Hawthorne, NY; and Leah Wiegand, a stay-at-home mom from Austin, TX.

Round 1 Categories: The Really Old College Try – Just Kidding – A Woman of the World – The Name of the Game – Always Say Never – Stupid Proverbs

Isaac found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “A Woman of the World” under the $800 clue on the 10th pick of the round. He was tied for the lead with Leah at $1,600, $400 more than Pasquale in second place. Isaac made it a true Daily Double and thought it was Indonesia. That was WRONG.

In 1993, True Path Party leader, Tansu Ciller, became the first female Prime Minister of this large Muslim country show

Isaac finished in the lead with $3,800. Pasquale was in second with $2,200. Leah was last with $800. All clues were shown.

Round 2 Categories: A River Runs to It – “Baby” Movies – The History Channel – People with Muppet Names – No, I Don’t Need a Doctor – Smart Answers

Pasquale found the first Daily Double in “People with Muppet Names” under the $1,600 clue on the 16th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $4,600, $1,000 more than Leah in second place. Pasquale bet $2,500 and came up with Kermit. That was WRONG.

This patron saint of Mediterranean sailors lent his name to a phenomenon seen during storms show

Isaac got the last Daily Double in “A River Runs to It” under the $2,000 clue with one clue left after it. He was in second place with $7,000, $600 less than Leah’s lead. Isaac bet $1,500 but couldn’t come up with a guess so he was WRONG.

The Vistula: this sea show

Leah finished in the lead with $7,600. Isaac was second with $6,700 and Pasquale was last with $4,900. All clues were shown.

TWO of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS MOTOWN?

Berry Gordy, as you may recall, was the FJ! answer on 9/15/2020, which resulted in much controversy over his first name. Today, thankfully, it’s about the record company Gordy founded when he was about 30 years old. Up until then, Gordy had tried several occupations, from boxing to working at the Lincoln-Mercury car factory while, at the same time, writing songs and nurturing his recording company vision. “I wanted to have a kid off the street walk in one door unknown and come out another door a star, like an assembly line,” he has said, “that was my dream.”

To that end, Gordy put the car assembly line principles to good use when in 1959, he set up his record company, initially Tamla Records. The following year, the company was incorporated as Motown Record Corporation. Gordy took raw talent from the streets of Detroit (the Motor City) and groomed their talents and stage presence, launching them on to international stardom– and the hits just kept on coming. Motown had over 75 Top 10 records on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1960s from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations, the Four Tops and many more.

Pasquale came up with 8 Mile, actually an Eminem film. (His record company is Shady Records). Pasquale bet nothing, standing pat on $4,900.

Isaac got it right. He bet $3,101, bringing him up to $9,801.

Leah also got it right. She bet $5,000 and won the game with $12,600. Leah Wiegand is a semi-finalist. Pasquale and Isaac won $5,000 each.

When I first saw Leah, I could have sworn it was Jillian from Workaholics.

We get the show 3+ hours late on Mondays because of football. This one was very up and down, to put it mildly. Way too many wrong responses and total stumpers. And these were all past champions?

Cinch FJ if you know ANYTHING about old music. “1959” and “Lincoln-Mercury” were huge hints.

Very disappointed no one got the last two DDs, the patron saint and Vistula’s sea. The Grant-Hepburn “baby” movie is pretty well-known. “Simply fade away” clue was not difficult. The three missed rivers and the two missed stupid proverbs were inexcusable.

IIRC, Isaac bagged it the last time – by not betting enough. Seriously – if I can’t get on there, they better darn well realize that it is manna from heaven for a second chance, and bet it all. ALL!! Or, alternately, maybe learn the first time what to do the second? I’m definitely not impressed. And I’m a doctor! If Isaac is going to become a colleague, he’s gotta be more aggressive. Or logical, even.

Also, a low scoring venture. I’m not sure who was the “cooler”. Pasquale was sure charismatic enough.

And I have no dramatics for you, VJ! I just love your site, and the work you do!!

    • Jason says:

Yes, 2/17/2022! His cautious play cost him, this time. It’s logic – go for it all!

    • VJ says:

I agree with you, Jason. They should just go all in. There are no Wild Cards to worry about and no difference between 2nd and 3rd place prizes. The only exception I can see is if you hate the category enough to stand pat.

And thanks, I’m glad you love Fikkle Fame. We appreciate your visits.😁

  4. Ismael Gomez says:

We began the with 3 missed DDs resulted our second skunking. I hope William Weyser would say darn those daily doubles to Isaac.

    • William Weyser says:

Yes, especially since the material in the National College Championship was not very nice to me, and Isaac Applebaum was supposed to be in last year’s Second Chance, but due to an unspecified scheduling conflict, Erica Weiner-Amachi took his place, and Isaac is getting his Second Chance in this tournament instead.

  5. Paul says:

Unacceptable! The Daily Double “A Woman of the World” should have the date 1993 not 1833 as you wrote in ERROR! You ruined the clue for all of us. There was no Turkey in 1833, so I guessed wrong. How difficult is it to get the dates correct?

    • VJ says:

Mistakes like that happen from time to time, Paul. Usually, it’s in a money amount but whatever it is, we fix it as soon as we can. Most readers know that mistakes will happen and helpfully point it out without the dramatics.

Anyway, since you know you would have been right if it said 1993, you can count it right. Sorry ’bout that.

      • Paul says:

Thanks for the correction. I was on a date and the woman I was with wasn’t impressed that I didn’t get all the clues correct. I don’t know that they’ll be second date now. Accidents happen.

        • VJ says:

Gee, Paul, if she won’t go out with you again because you got a Jeopardy! clue wrong that wasn’t even your fault, we’re inclined to think we did you a favor.
