Final Jeopardy: Phrases from Literature (10-19-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/19/2020) in the category “Phrases from Literature” was:

This 2-word phrase in “The Arabian Nights” may have come from an herb bearing seed pods that burst when ripe

2x champ, Kristin Hucek, an attorney from San Francisco, CA, has now won $8,000. In Game 3, she takes on these 2 players: Nancy Bosecker, a software engineer originally from Peoria, IL; and Joe Aquino, an analyst from Chula Vista, CA

Joe got the last Daily Double in “Primates” under the $2,000 clue on the 14th pick. In second place with $3,200, he had $5,200 less than Kristin’s lead. He said “I waited all my life. Let’s make it a true Daily Double.” He was stumped but tried homo sapiens even though he knew it was WRONG.

About 30,000 years old, an early homo sapiens skull called this “1” was discovered in 1868 at the French site of the same name. show

Kristin finished in the lead with $8,800. Nancy was next with $8,000 and Joe was in third place with $3,200. Two clues in “Triangular” stayed on the board.

ALL of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right. I think it would have blown Alex Trebek’s mind if that didn’t happen.

WHAT IS OPEN SESAME?

In “Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, “Open Sesame” are the magic words that open the cave where the forty thieves store stolen treasure. The story is not one of the original “Arabian Nights”. It was added by French orientalist and archaeologist, Antoine Galland, in the early 1700s. Wikipedia’s article states that “the phrase derives from the plant sesame” in the opening paragraph; however, later on, two alternative theories are presented: (1) “Sesame is a reduplication of the Hebrew šem” and (2) it is “connected to Babylonian magic practices which used sesame oil.”

There are other theories if you look around online. Galland’s “Sesame, ouvre-toi” is said to be his translation of the Arabic “iftaḥ yā simsim”. A BlogSpot article connects it to the Serbs.

Joe bet it all and finished with $6,400.

Nancy doubled her score, too, and finished with $16,000.

Kristin bet $8,008 and won the game with $16,808. Her 3-day total is $24,808.

I also missed days of thunder as that film I have not seen. The Poe category was up in my alley. Congrats to everyone that got the triple solve today. Open sesame is also from disney’s Aladdin and the king of thieves.

  2. Richard Corliss says:

This was a rugged game. The girls and Joe were up and down over and over throughout the show.

I ran the film category, except the top row clue. I’ve never heard of “Days of Thunder”.

I missed that one, too. I’ve heard of it but couldn’t pull it up. I ran the Poe “M” category
