Final Jeopardy: Psychological Terms (10-15-20)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (10/15/2020) in the category “Psychological Terms” was:

Physician “Cannonball Mike” Friedman defined this behavioral type & admitted the term applied to himself

5x champ, Kevin Walsh, a story analyst originally from Williamstown, NJ, brought his winnings up to $111,301 yesterday and qualified for the next ToC. In Game 6, he competes against: Daniel Lee, an orthopedic surgeon from South Pasadena, CA; and Kristin Hucek, an attorney from San Francisco, CA.

Round 1 Categories: Word Puzzles – Micronations – on the Billboard Charts in 2020 – Animals – A Visit to the Tailor – A Pair of Pence

Kevin found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “A Pair of Pence” under the $1,000 clue, with 2 whole categories to go after it. He was in second place with $2,800, $200 less than Kristin’s lead. He bet $1,000 and came up with Amstel. That was WRONG.

Brought to England from Holland, this liquor was sold in shops promising “drunk for a penny, dead drunk for twopence”. show

Kevin finished in the lead with $4,400. Kristin was second with $4,200 and Daniel was last with $2,400.

Round 2 Categories: Crime & Punishment – American Playwrights – Berry Special – From “A” to “Y” – World History – where Have I Seen Those Stairs?

Kristin found the first Daily Double in “World History” under the $1,600 clue on the 20th pick. She was in the lead with $13,000 now, $6,600 more than Daniel in second place. She bet $2,000 and thought it was Brahmanism. That was WRONG.

This religion that has Hindu & Islamic influences arose in the Punjab in the early 16th century. show

Daniel got the last Daily Double in “American Playwrights” under the $800 clue. Whew! We didn’t think we’d see that with so little time left. In second place with $8,000, he had $3,400 less than Kristin’s lead. He bet $4,000 and he was RIGHT.

He’s the playwright seen here with his famous second wife. show

Daniel finished in the lead with $12,000. Kristin was next with $11,400 and Kevin was in third place with $2,000. The bottom two ‘Playwright’ clues went uncovered.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS TYPE A PERSONALITY?

Cardiologist and medical researcher Meyer Friedman was known for characterizing personalities as Type A and Type B, and co-authoring “Type A Behavior and Your Heart” with Ray H. Rosenman. Friedman’s 2001 obituary in the L.A. Times says: “‘Type A personality’ soon became part of the national vocabulary, shorthand for the sort of driven individual who feels oppressed by time…. the person who… feels compelled to do several things at once” (what we now call multi-tasking 🤣). The article does not say he was called “Mike”, it says he got the nickname “Cannonball” in the Army due to his impatience and brusque behavior and that he called himself a recovering Type A.

An old clue from 2007: AM I YOUR TYPE? ($600) Meyer Friedman coined this term for an angry, driven personality type who Friedman thought had high heart attack risk

Kevin wrote down “obsessive-compulsive.” He bet jolly jolly no pence so he stayed at $2,000.

Kristin went with risk-taker. She lost her $8,700 bet, finishing with $2,700. (There went Kevin’s last chance for a 6th win.)

Daniel wrote down “borderline pers”. He lost $10,801, landing in third place with $1,199. That made Kristin the new Jeopardy! champ.

Final Jeopardy (10/15/2020) Kevin Walsh, Daniel Lee, Kristin Hucek

2 triple stumpers from AMERICAN PLAYWRIGHTS

($400) Tennessee Williams modeled the character of Laura Wingfield in this play after his own sister

($1200) The future of a family heirloom is at the heart of “The Piano Lesson”, which earned him his second Pulitzer Prize

I found this a weird question. The nature of the hint (Cannonball Mike) led me to think they were talking about a term related to risky or thrill-seeking behavior. I went with daredevil. I never would’ve thought Type A personality from the wording of the question.

Final was tough today. I came up with “Alpha male” which was close but not the right answer.
Missed the first 20 minutes (thanks for the recap) and was shocked to see Kevin so far behind.
He’s a strong player, quick on the buzzer, but he always seemed beatable to me (but not by me).

I like to see how many stumpers I can get. There seem to be a lot of them this season so far. I think it’s because they’re restricting the contestant pool to southern Californians. I did know 5 of them. Have to admit I didn’t know the Highbridge area of NYC even though I lived in NY for 17 years as a kid and young adult.

  3. HS says:

Did not think final was well written/ thought out. The category was Psychology, not pop psych by cardiologist.

  4. Aidan Conroy says:

I was so glad that Elaine lost yesterday and I told Kristin to do true daily double but she didn’t listen I’m so glad that Daniel lost but not Kristin

  5. William Weyser says:

While Kevin’s $0 wager is not a bad wager, there is 1 problem with Kristin’s wager that I have, and I do want to point it out. If Kristin doubled up, she would have had $22,800. So, Daniel would have had to wager, what he did, $10,801. If Daniel missed with that wager, he would have been left with $1,199, which is good news for Kevin, because he can wager up to $800, and stay above Daniel, but you will notice that if Kevin got it right with that wager, he would have had $2,800. Kristin could wager up to $8,599 to stay above that total, but because she wagered a little bit too much, if she missed with what she did wager, she would have lost to Kevin by $100, and Kevin would have been a 6-Day Champion. Kristin, you don’t want to give the 3rd place player, who is way behind, the opportunity to possibly beat you. Oh, well. Great run though, Kevin. 5 wins & $111,301. We’ll see you in the Tournament of Champions, and we’ll see if Kristin can win a lot more money than $2,700 tomorrow.

    • Richard Corliss says:

      We hope.

      • William Weyser says:

Yes. Hopefully, we’ll see him the Tournament of Champions, which is probably in 2021, along with other guaranteed participants from Sam Kavanaugh to Ben Henri.

  6. Dal Higbee says:

I think Kevin lost on purpose.

    • Aidan Conroy says:

How many players on Jeopardy had made comebacks in the double Jeopardy Round

    • JP says:

I think that’s unlikely. Today being Thursday, today’s game would have been filmed just coming off of a lunch break after playing non-stop all morning. That would be tough. Whereas his competitors would have been fresh.

  7. Ismael Gomez says:

Tough day today plus a triple stumper in the final.

  8. VJ says:

Well that was an interesting game. Kevin was in the lead despite a couple of misses at the end of the first round. By the 8th clue in the next round, Kristin had a $5K lead over him and Daniel. He seemed to feel like he was under the gun (no pun intended with that 8th clue), and started taking guesses to catch up.

It was kind of a bad luck day for him and it wouldn’t surprise me if he had the right answer on that Highbridge section clue when he wasn’t allowed to buzz in.

    • VJ says:

P.S. After everyone went belly up, Alex said “What does the word ‘Cannonball’ imply?” as if that was the tipoff in the clue. I thought it was “behavioral type”. Kristin was the only one who picked up on that. The other responses are disorders.

      • JP says:

I think “behavioral type” could get you to the Type A vs. Type B theory, and then “Cannonball” could narrow you down to “Type A”.

The only other thing that crossed my mind at all was “extrovert”, but I knew that was popularized by Jung.

        • VJ says:

True, JP! It would be a coin flip without that addition, unless you knew something about ol’ Cannonball himself

        • Jacob Ska says:

I just watched the show and wonder if the contestants didn’t write the correct response because the word “type” was already in the fj clue? I’m far from being a mind reader but if I had been on the show I would think it could not be “Type A” because the writers wouldn’t dare give me part of the response within the clue.

  9. Lou says:

Well Kevin had a great run with five games and he is definitely ready for the tournament of champions.

I’ve never heard of type A personality before so this one I had no clue on. I doubt Kristen can win a few more games but we shall see. What happens to people who fall into the type B personality, and what will it indicate for their heart?

    • VJ says:

@Lou, read the obituary I linked to — it tells you people he identified as the two types and that Type B experienced less stress.

  10. Richard Corliss says:

That’s okay. See you later, Kevin. We hope.
