Only ONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “BRIGADOON”?

The image shown is of the “Brig o’ Doon,” a medieval bridge in Ayrshire, Scotland. In “The Legend of Brigadoon,” GlenLaurel.com gives the story behind the connection to the 1947 Lerner and Loewe musical, “Brigadoon”: “The story involves two American tourists who stumble upon Brigadoon, a mysterious Scottish village which appears for only one day every hundred years. Tommy, one of the tourists, falls in love with Fiona, a young woman from Brigadoon. A 1954 film version starred Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse. A 1966 television version starred Robert Goulet and Peter Falk.”

Scottish poet Robert Burns liked to refer to the River Doon in his songs and poetry, like “Tam o”Shanter” and “The Banks o’ Doon.” An old Jeopardy! clue tells us that Burns was “born on Jan, 25, 1759 in Alloway, a village on the River Doon in this country”

Kristina wrote down “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” She lost her $6,001 bet, leaving her with $1,999.

Patrick had “a Roman arch.” He lost $2,200, finishing with $11,800.

Alex got it right. He bet $8,101 so he won the game with $28,001. His 4-day total is $92,880. Hooray!

I could see this happening once in a lifetime–but TWICE??

I’m a Jeopardy junkie so it’s on every evening. Once about–God knows how long ago–Alex announced that the final Jeopardy question had to do with Broadway musicals. Before the show cut to commercial I quipped, “Brigadoon”–well damn if that wasn’t the final Jeopardy answer!! And guess what? Today’s Jeopardy category was Broadway musicals, and–you guessed it–as the show cut to commercial I shouted BRIGADOON–and I was right!!

Not a runaway game, but a very CLOSE shave, breathing a sigh of relief, came out with the correct response, won almost $93,000. Has anyone watched or listened to its songs in “Brigadoon”? For once, I have NEVER heard of it.

By the way, @Howard, if the WS matchup is Dodgers vs. Red Sox, I WILL NEVER WATCH IT.

First congrats to alex on making a big win today and making a comeback in the second round. I think we could see Alex go for his fifth win tomorrow as long as he has confidence. Plus John and VJ I am not sure if you guys heard of Anne Murray because Bridge Over Troubled Water was her song. There was peace in the valley, in the Garden and so forth. Kristen was close since her response was music related. How did Patrick not notice the keyword knots in that first daily double? I thought he knew about macrame

    • John B./I. says:

Anne Murray covered a lot of songs written and sung by other artists, BOTW was written by Paul Simon 1970. It is pretty much S&G’s signature song together with “the sound of Silence”, featured prominently in “The Graduate with Dustin Hoffman, one of my favorite actors He could play any character, no matter how opposite they were.

    • VJ says:

@Lou, well, I think Patrick did very well catching up there on that last DD, and preventing Alex from getting a runaway.

Alex is a powerhouse. I was impressed with him getting that Alexis de Tocqueville clue. He might be getting a little tired, losing some $$ on a couple of clues toward the end of Round 2, but I hope he wins tomorrow!

  5. John B./I. says:

First of all congratulations to Alex. 4 games, 4 wins, 2 of them a runaway.

@JJ I guess not everybody saw it as being that easy. But when I read it’s a Lerner/Loewe musical and saw a BRIdGe, the word BRIGADOON jumped right at me. It was basically spelled out. Katrina with “BOTW” was at least in the music area.
Patrick either just misread the clue- not seeing the word “musical” in there- or he just saw the bridge and that was it. Because “Roman Arch” never was or will be a musical.
