WHAT IS THE EAST INDIA COMPANY?

The National Archives (UK) has a history of the East India Company, “the first joint stock company, set up by royal charter in 1600 to trade between Britain and India.” The royal charter, granted by Elizabeth I on 12/31/1600, gave the company a 15-year monopoly on all trade in the East Indies. The charter was renewed and extended under Charles II and James II. The East India Company became very powerful, ruling over India and exploiting its resources, while mismanaging finances (which even affected the American colonies). Ultimately, the company’s powers were curtailed by Parliament. It was dissolved in 1874.

After Geoff’s answer included “British”, Alex indicated that they also would take “English” but, apparently, neither is necessary. From 1997: BAY WATCHING ($300) In 1639 the East India Company founded the city of Madras on this bay

Cara wrote down a scribbly East India. Alex said that wasn’t enough. She lost her $5,300 bet and finished with $200.

Jessica thought it was the Virginia Company. She lost everything but $1.00

Geoff got it right with the British East India Company. He bet $8,599 and won the game with $33,399. Geoff Duncan is the new Jeopardy! champ.
