Final Jeopardy: Blockbuster Movies (1-6-21)

Today’s Final Jeopardy question (1/6/2021) in the category “Blockbuster Movies” was:

Released in 2017, this movie is the highest-grossing film in the U.S. that’s set during World War I

New champ Manisha Munshi, an attorney from San Francisco, CA, won $7,100 yesterday. In Game 2, she takes on these two players: Jared Blum, an anesthesiologist from Bellingham, Washington; and Yoshie Hill, an executive assistant from Colma, CA.

Round 1 Categories: All about Adam & Eve – “Me” TV – Your Government at Work – 4, 4 – Inspector – Gadget

Jared found the Jeopardy! round Daily Double in “Your Government at Work” under the $800 clue on the 18th pick of the round. He was in the lead with $2,800, $200 more than Yoshie in second place. He decided to “throw caution to the wind” and make it a true Daily Double. He managed to come up with “Chairman of the” before time ran out. That was 3 words but it was WRONG.

In 2020 Charles Q. Brown got this 3-word title for the Air Force & is the 1st African-American general to lead a military branch. show

Yoshie finished in the lead with $3,800. Manisha was second with $3,000 and Jared was last with $2,800. Four clues in the “Inspector category” went uncovered.

Round 2 Categories: Peak at the Mountains – A Plant-Based Diet – Billboard No. 1 Song of the Year – 19th Century America – Caveat Sculptor – That’s So “G-Q”

Jared found the first Daily Double in “Peak at the Mountains” under the $1,600 clue on the second pick. No one got the first clue so the scores were the same as they were at the end of the first round. He bet $2,000 and he was RIGHT.

The border between these 2 countries goes right down the middle of a room in the Hotel Arbez in the Jura Mountains. show

Seven clues later, Jared got the last Daily Double in “19th Century America” under the $2,000 clue. In the lead with $8,800, he had $3,000 more than Manisha in second place. He bet $3,000 and tried “Field & Stream.” That was WRONG.

In 1857 this monthly magazine with an oceanic name was founded in Boston; it moved to D.C. 150 years later. show

Yoshie finished in the lead with $13,800. Manisha was next with $13,400 and Jared was in third place with $8,200. No clues went uncovered in this round.

NONE of the contestants got Final Jeopardy! right.

WHAT IS “WONDER WOMAN”?

“Wonder Woman” (2017) starred Israeli actress, Gal Gadot as Amazon princess Diana. She gets involved in World War I when pilot Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) crash lands on her island. After its domestic opening weekend, this film “immediately became the highest grossing film about World War I (The Great War), and the first to gross over $100 million” (per IMDB trivia).

It also attained the highest gross for a live-action film directed by a woman (Patty Jenkins), domestic and worldwide. By November 2017, Forbes reported that “Patty Jenkins’ critically acclaimed blockbuster saw updated international receipts that finally pushed the box office totals to $821.74 million, topping the cume of 2002’s Spider-Man and giving Gal Godot’s Amazon warrior-princess the crown as the highest-grossing superhero origin film of all time.”

Jared thought it was “1917”, about the right war, but it was released in 2019. He lost his $5,601 bet and finished with $2,599.

Manisha thought it was “Dunkirk”, a 2017 film but about WWII. She bet and lost it all.

Yoshie also had “1917”. She lost an even $7,000 and won the game with the $6,800 she had left. Yoshie Hill is the new Jeopardy! champ.

  2. rhonda says:

I loved Manisha’s reason for becoming a lawyer, VJ. I wonder which character was wearing the pretty yellow outfit lol?

    • VJ says:

yeah, Rhonda, too bad she only remembered the outfit. I wondered if yellow is her favorite color. It’s my favorite..

      • rhonda says:

I bet yellow is her favorite color, VJ! She was quite taken by that outfit.

        • VJ says:

Another thing in the chat that was funny was Alex’s question to Yoshie about repetitive clues in crossword puzzles. I would have said Um… yeah, Jeopardy! does that, too.

Meantime, Jax was heard to say “Yoshi is a boy’s name” (If Yoshie sees this, Yoshi is a Super Mario dinosaur. Jax is 5 years old)

        • rhonda says:

          So true!!
Aww, that’s so cute about Jax. A friend of mine has a cat named Yoshi.

  3. Quinn says:

This got preempted for me due to the issue earlier today 🙁 VJ, do you have a link to this episode?

  4. Ismael Gomez says:

We now have three straight triple stumpers this week.

  5. William Weyser says:

Are we ever gonna get our 1st correct response of the year? Sancho Panza, it’s paying time.

  6. Kevin Cheng says:

So far this week there are three straight FJs that no has got it right. I have a feeling that we are not going to have any correct FJ responses this week. I may be right about that.

  7. Lou says:

Three triple stumper final jeopardy this week and yet none of the contestants are movie buffs. This wasn’t even that hard as the clue was asking for a super hero film during the first world war. What was manisha thinking with Dunkirk?

    • VJ says:

I said Dunkirk too when I saw the clue this morning. 😁

I was remarking to my daughter that, unlike yesterday, Manisha seemed pretty nervous today. When she finally got to the Billboard category, I said, “now she’ll catch up.” We were so astounded that no one got the $2000 “All the boys they say que soy buena” clue, I didn’t even notice till afterwards that Manisha would have finished in the lead if she got that.
